Couple takeaways from the game yesterday
  • Jack Henry when he is healthy is maybe the most underrated key defender in the comp, so good yesterday
  • Mitch Knevitt's inside game has dramatically improved, looks so much stronger and gives us a big body to throw in there
  • SDK is gonna get beaten in centre bounces but he is also gonna kill some rucks with his ability to spread out of the stoppages, looks so much better being up the ground and around the footy compared to last year.
  • Danger looked like he was playing Chucky's old role and putting on great pressure in the first half. Love him up forward, think they only moved him into the middle after freo killed us in that third but always nice to have that up our sleeve and throw him in the guts when needed. should hopefully keep him fresher come the end of the season.

I thought it was Shannon Neale best game iv seen him play.. he played like a bloke who wanted to show his a big boy now and I'm going to take this opportunity.
Honestly, it was such a nearly game for him. There probably were - without exaggeration - about six occasions in the first half where he got the first hands to the ball, in a contested situation, but just couldn't hold on to the mark.

He's presenting really well, but just getting a bit of the trampoline hands at the moment. I was relieved he finally got a few to stick.

Mullin looks better the further he is away from our defensive goal square.

Surely the best thing for him now would be a month in the VFL on the ball.

I do wonder if a fit again Cam Guthrie could finish his career as he started in a small defender role to get another Premiership. Atkins may have to take on the job though, the ultimate team man. Clearly we have a problem there and small forwards are becoming increasingly important to the modern game.
Has Teddy ever been tried as a defender in VFL before?
Feel like he'd be an ok lock down. Has speed and can tackle.
Can't ever seen him breaking into the side as a fwd given how good our smalls are.

We took 11 contested marks. Of those 11 Cameron took 4 and Neale 3. Freo took 5 in total.

Needs more Gripo

Has anyone analysed the 3rd quarter fadeout?
Was it mainly a big momentum swing which is often unstoppable?
Was it our MF just not keeping up?
I didn't see it live.

15 disposals, 1 goal and 7 score involvements playing the most difficult role on the field. He also led the team for F50 ground ball gets with 4. I'll never understand how this board picks its whipping boys.
I think the post was ironic about letting down the long sleeve fraternity rather than his game.
I've been a BC fan since his debut over here and I dare say we win every game when he gets 15 touches- he's a barometer as to our team performance IMHO

They just belted us through the middle for the last fifteen minutes of the quarter, no two ways about it. Just one of those periods where first hands on it were always Freo.

Absolutely, but he is still in that period of his career where he doesn’t yet find the easy ball outside of contests. It’s why he’ll get three contested marks, but single figure kicks and a goal.

Not a criticism per se, but more where I hope he’ll get better.

Definitely got to a lot more contests than an ageing Hawkins. IMO the right call was made last year

Neale had a nearly game and i would have him in the best 5-8 players on the ground.

If that game goes from a nearly game to a complete game he becomes clear best 3 on ground.
Absolutely LOVED his kicking into the F50 today.

Hit up Stengle with a very clever snap to space - GOAL.
Hit Atkins with fantastic inboard vision - GOAL.
Hit Cameron on the lead with a low 50m pass - GOAL.
Hit Cameron again when he marked and played on immediately - GOAL.

Baz should have hit him up in the last quarter also, instead of going for goal himself...

A BIG breakout game will come soon.. A big 5-6 goal game against STK next week would be nice..

The best thing about Neale is that although he might not always WIN the contest, he also never loses them and almost always atleast brings the ball to ground, and with our elite small/ground forwards that's exactly what we want from him.
Sure once he starts to really be a good contested marker then he'll just go up level by level but even right now, having an "almost" game, is still vitally important and impactful.

Yep. The MC made a BIG mistake late last season by dropping him in the wet against the Doggies..
He is a big pack target, something that Hawkins could do in the second half of his career.
