AFL Toast RND 4: Win Against the Crows

Who will make no difference because the side has no defensive standards.
Hard competitive inside mids set the defensive standards and the rest follow. Our mids are the biggest culprits. Until will change them, we won’t set good standards.

Nice return to form from redman and im loving him close to goals.

Draper immense.

Durham was excellent too. Got us moving early on

Parish and mcgrath reminded me of parish and mcgrath.
Im convinced we are carrying one too many small mids and im looking at shiel as the one who should make way.

Ham. I still dont get it.
Shiel to make way ??? Are you serious … he’s been our best clearance player all year … todays not as affective but he’s a beast and all class…

Thank ****. A loss there was season over, but sometimes you need to just get the win however it comes & it builds belief for season moving forward.

A lot to work on, especially with our defensive transition, but we create a rod for our own back with our lack of patience & thought goig i50.

We move onto freo, which is as gettable as today.

We put out the youngest side in the comp this week, crows were pretty much full strength so its a fair effort

A few things that stood out
  • kick ins: not sure if we are intentionally zoning back but we are gifting the opposition free players until it gets to the wing. The opposition are not giving us the same luxury. Repeat i50s and scores from forward half turnovers are something we need more of
  • defensive transition: when we lost possession in our forward half it was sent the length of the field untouched far too often. Is our defense too slow to stop these leads or are our mids not defending tightly enough. Should be a real focus to be desperate when we don’t have the footy to get it back

I wonder how he'd be as a wing/hf and use that running power to cut teams up out wide.
Parish, merrett, mcgrath and caldwell would work better with a different beast alongside. More get ball/feed ball out and block.

Remember that kick at the end of the game that led to a Crows goal.

That would happen alot of we gave him time and space to run.

In and under or nothing for Shiel.
Everyone harped on about that. Yep, made a mistake. Yep, cost a goal.

Why didn't anyone talk about how he won the next centre clearance?

1 year is half way there ?
There is actually a clear time line in what we have done.
2007 - 2015 build until the saga really took hold while we may have been able to add the final bits to challenge top 4. Was a bit hit and miss but we where in a solid position even if we did lose a few players. Without the saga I think we would have won a final and had the squad to build on.
2016 players suspended.
2017 decent season. Make the 8.
2018-2019 top up via trades.
2020 fall off the cliff. Go to the draft.
2021 start playing most young blokes we have. Older players moved on.
There is a clear decision we made at the end of 2020 and have taken 4 fist round picks in the last 2 drafts.
The Blues just tanked for draft picks and spent years doing it. Melbourne where not much better.
My comment wasn't about all of that - it was an all inclusive 'we're over half way to the 20 years of shit' as per the CFC comment I replied to.
We know that the proper rebuild commenced last year, it took us a looong time to commit to one.
We mock Carlton's 20 years... - we have endured well over 10 years of not much substance.
Don't worry, we're all here for the same ride.

McGrath was good mostly but still two very poor decisions at either end of the ground that cost us two goals.

Good to see a few regain form and good games again from Martin and Durham. Also I’d prefer Stewart to Zerk

Somewhat comically at one point we had guys flooding back from the centre square after losing the clearance and then unexpectedly got possession back and everyone else just stopped running 😅 was a good thing Adelaide were out of position just as much as we were, and we managed to kick it over the zone for a forward entry, but still.

When you consider our backline Kelly was a bizarre pick up.
It is a bit bizarre not to see the reason why we picked him up. Unless you are happy with the lack of one on one skills a potion of our back half have.

Hard competitive inside mids set the defensive standards and the rest follow. Our mids are the biggest culprits. Until will change them, we won’t set good standards.
So the players we let run out of our forward line to create the overlap run will suddenly become a non factor ?
Our "team" defense is the issue. Changing a few midfielders is not the sudden fix.

I know I have harped on about our team defence but one thing that doesn't help is turnovers. They have been killing us all year.

We were better but still too many. Sucks the life out of us at times.

I know a lot of people criticise the defensive transition etc and it's not wrong, we aren't great at it.
I know we were last at it in the comp but isnt it largely to do with how you enter your forward 50 and how you use the ball?
We suck at going into our 50m, clean up our targets ahead of the ball it's not as easy to sweep it out.

Then the other side of it is just the horrendous turnovers we inflict on ourselves, that can't be helpful. It would be all well and good if we were kicking it to 1v1s and then getting beaten and rebounded on but we are fumbling, handpassing or kicking it straight to opposition in 10m of space in the centre of the ground, normally by one of our flankers who has run off their man so are really badly out of position for the counter.
