I think the reasonable position is "at the right price". Reality is what we should be willing to pay for him (risk v reward) likely wont go close to being enough to get him to move and thats completely fine. I rate him pretty highly and i would still be pretty cautious on him. To me people going "nah wouldnt want him even if he wins us a flag cause hes a naughty boy" are just silly. By all means say you think hes suplus to needs, not worth the risk or not value for what hed cost but pontificating on his character is stupid. Hes a footballer not a priest.
Unfortunately he is also a recidivist when it comes to treating women 'poorly'. He's more than a naughty boy... in fact that description just excuses his sh!thouse, borderline criminal behaviour.

As a footballer... yes. He'd undoubtedly make us a better team. Having said that I'm far from convinced he pushes us into contention anyway. He's a long way behind those that he is often compared to IMO and at 26/27 is he suddenly going to be the consistent superstar that he's always been predicted to be?

But let's not ignore that fact that his on field talent is only part of the package that we have to consider. Times have changed significantly since 2010 & what Lovett brought to the club. Multiply that heat by a thousand and consider what a DeGoey scandal would bring us.

Part of me wants to throw caution to the wind with the potential windfall but a bigger part of me knows that these gambles just don't pay off for us...

Well as it stands neither of them were convicted, i dont say that as a defence necesarily just pointing out that he currently doesnt really have anything legally on his record.

On DeGoey (and ive said this a multitude of times) i only want him at the right price and that would NOT be him as our highest paid player (which i also realise means we almost certainly wont get him). Any offer to him has to be risk v reward and his risk is huge but he is a player that genuinely makes us better on field overnight. We clearly have a different position on the character requirement of footballers and thats fine.
his recent apology is pretty crazy given the last statement he put out, I reckon there's about 1% of truth in it. Could definitely see him jumping ship at the end of the year

The bolded is a point ive reiterated numerous times. Hes risk v reward (reckon ive written that 400 times now).

We dont really have to throw caution to the wind and thats the point. Make him a reasonable considered offer (money, duration and behavioural clauses and if he takes it then we have mitigated the risk to a point and we assume the reward is comensurate.

Personally after nearly 60 years without the ultimate success i can handle the jibes of poor recruitment if it turns out the be a failure (bearing in mind we lose nothing in terms of draft picks or even salary really) more than i can handle continuing to be an also ran.

Fair call on the "naughty boy" comment, i certainly dont condone his behaviour, im simply pointing out that as it stands he has three of four cases being dismissed so hes not exactly a criminal, that doesnt make him a fine upstanding citizen, hes almost certainly a scumbag with hilariously bad judgement but my broader point is im not following the saints in the hopes we win humantiarian awards, premierships and success should be the goal and if we can better society as part of that then great.

Write the contract up right and a salary not over the top , you couldn't knock him back.

Has a contract ever been written with a behavioural component? I wonder if the AFLPA would allow that?

It's pretty simple. If the Pies are happy to let him walk then they'll want band 1 compo. Offer him just enough for band 1 circa $750K and include a rigid behavioral clause. He ducks up and it's career over, no pay out.

Is he Martin 2.0 or is he Gresham 2.0?

Does he become a mid forward or a forward mid?

To me he seems a bit like a Jake Stringer. Can play mid or forward, can do the freakish, but comes with a significant risk of continuing to get into trouble.

JS certainly left the Bulldogs with a troubled past. Of course it’s accepted he cost his new club a lot less than even a devalued JDG will cost any suitor.

I think Cousins contract absolutely did. It was certainly reported at the time it would have.

I also think theyre bound by AFL clauses anyway (game into disrepute stuff) so a minor extension on that wouldnt be that uncommon youd think.

De Goey says he has ADHD. That might change things, in my mind anyway. I more inclined to take him now it's a medical condition and he's not a complete w*nker. Worth pondering. All the negative publicity is sh*te though, sponsors would be ready to jump ship.

bailey Smith everyday of the week

For his age Smith is incredible, he’s a proper superstar type. They don’t come up outside drafts or luck. Doubt the Dogs let him go ever.

De goey probably just looks better because he was in a better team for most of his career. Gresh developed in one of the shittest teams in the comp until the last couple years. De goey was finals bound most of his career and played in a grand final quality side.
Came on early and tore up a finals series too.

There were lots of hearsay rumours of Smith in the hubs and WA. He doesn’t attract De Goey publicity but he’s no choirboy either by the sound of it.

Just had Heath Black on SEN. Didn't catch the whole thing but he was diagnosed with ADHD at 31 and it has changed his life around because he got assistance and now has tools to cope.

As I said didn't catch the whole interview but it sounds like he works in that area of mental health nowdays and one of his points is that this constant pile on to an individual with a mental health (as he called it) condition can lead to consequences for the individual from becoming more distressed to a possible worst case scenario, said he recognised many of the behaviours of DeGoey in his own poor behaviour instances prior to diagnosis.

So guys, maybe lay off the 'he is a piece of shit' type comments. I am sure he wont read this but there is plenty piling on from the twitter sewer to bully in chief Gerard Whately.

I am being serious here, one day a player will get piled on by the sanctimonious mob led by Whately and Wilson and they will top themselves.

After Spuds match, after all the lip service about 'time to talk', after the hypocricy of the media patting themselves on the back about how woke AFL is about mental health, we need a guy like Heath Black who to this day experiences mental health issues to come on the radio to tell it how it is.

Bet we will hear no contrition from the likes of Whately or Ralph or the other pile on experts.

An ADHD diagnosis doesn't make him less of a piece of shit for his continual mistreatment and disrespect of women.
