There is evidence that DeGoey was training everyday in Bali with a Collingwood fitness trainer, sticking to his program and doing everything required.

I don't know there is evidence that he doesn't train hard apart from reports he came back to training at not the required fitness
Wouldnt be on his own returning from an off season out of shape as well.

Id hazard that 20-30% of all players come back in varying degrees of "out of shape". There is a reason pre season starts in November.

What a thing to say. Could go back literally 10 years and dredge up posts saying the exact same thing about Dusty Martin, who wanted to come to the Saints but Watters put the kabosh on it.

I don't want DeGoey as a friend, I want to him to play football well ad help us win games. Same as any player.

The reason I don't want DeGoey is because we have more pressing needs, like umm MIDS. Look at Hill on the weekend, almost our best player, played a very goo game, but the mids were so woeful it made no difference. We have players like Hill, like Gres, etc who are X factor players but if we don't have the meat and potatoes grunt workers doing their job, they are ineffective.

Have cried out for years for mids, but lets spend all our capital on a half forward. Makes sense.

I agree to most of that but DeGoey isn’t a half forward. He’s more like Gresham or last years Petracca or Dusty. Plays burst through the midfield rests forward where he’s more like a dynamic small forward. We lack scoring power and pressure up front and impact in the midfield.

Go back and watch him in round one. He won clearance and delivered perfectly then dropped forward and kicks 2.3. 27 touches and 5 damaging burst clearances.

He was training with a local AFL club here.

Ultimately (and this has gone in circles for weeks) youre absolutely mad if you dont think our 22 looks better with DeGoey in it. Youre just flat out wrong.

Will he impact team chemistry, would he cost too much, would he steal a car and crash into Linton street in a drunken rage who knows. Youll land on your own spot with morals and character references about the guy but he can flat out play footy (if inconsistently).

Id want him at the right price because i dont care about most of these guys off the field (Lenny Hayes and Robert Harvey aside). So if De Goey comes for 5 years and plays well and then ruins his life ill be fine.

Don't know if there is much argument about this.

The argument I see is that some think he wouldn't be a good cultural fit (not me), others think he is not a player we would recruit for needs ( me)
Felt the same about Ben King, great player but our need is for mids. Despite what gringo says, from me seeing DeGoey live just a couple of weeks back, he is a half forward and didn't really play mid at all.

I think there absolutely is, plenty of people saying hes overrated and we have better x factor players etc etc.

gringo2011 is spot on with the comparison. Hes a mid/HFF same mould as Dusty and Trac. When he is in the midfield he gets clean pacy clearances and uses the ball well. To me him and gresh would do a 50/50 split mid and HFF (if we got him) and it would be an absolute nightmare for opposition.

I would baulk at De Goey at the original rumoured rate ($1mil x 5), but now it is a serious buyers market, if we get him at a big discount with proper behavioural clauses and with the buy in of our senior players then we'd be crazy not to.

Let's not forget his 2018 finals as a 21 yo:

QF- 2 goals
SF - 3 goals
PF - 4 goals
GF - 3 goals

He's a campaigner, but not a shrinking violet on the big stage. Show him some love now and it could pay off big time. If it backfires, so what, we've achieved nothing in the last 60 years anyway

sure, bout the same as degoey this season

*gresham 28 and 3 is a pretty bloody nice return from a midfielder
Fair, Gresh was pretty good on Friday (one of few).

On the year

Gresh averages 24 touches, 1.2 goals, 3.15 tackles
DeGoey averages 21.5 touches, 1 goal, 2.67 tackles

How good would having them both rotating mid and HFF be.

Much better than having them both rotating through New York & Bali.

Arguments for and against De Goey equally compelling.

Just glad it's not me making the call.
I think the reasonable position is "at the right price". Reality is what we should be willing to pay for him (risk v reward) likely wont go close to being enough to get him to move and thats completely fine. I rate him pretty highly and i would still be pretty cautious on him. To me people going "nah wouldnt want him even if he wins us a flag cause hes a naughty boy" are just silly. By all means say you think hes suplus to needs, not worth the risk or not value for what hed cost but pontificating on his character is stupid. Hes a footballer not a priest.

Two big stars in drama in the last week. Who would you rather have? De goey or Bailey smith

Not to bang on about it but.

They are even close in career stats than i would have imagined. Youd argue Jade is a year and a half younger and missed a bit of footy with the back and achilles so probably has a higher ceiling but they are remarkably similar in output.

The nature of the issues regarding De Goey and Bailey Smith are fundamentally different.

De goey probably just looks better because he was in a better team for most of his career. Gresh developed in one of the shittest teams in the comp until the last couple years. De goey was finals bound most of his career and played in a grand final quality side.

I dont think they are as dissimilar as you might.

Aside from Baileys being legitimately illegal etc. If youre suggesting that Baileys mental health makes his issues lesser or more manageable id suggest there is alot more bubbling under the surface than just that.
