It’s a very good question SumaGodCoach and I will address the parts to it.

Last year he was played as a HBF where he was a good defender and as such his defensive pressure was good.
He also didn’t mind going for a gallop and run and carry up the ground.

This year he changed the scope of his game to midfielder and showed that he can win the contested ball.
He covers a lot of ground and to that extent his two way running and linkup play very much presents him as a very good wing prospect.

There are three things that make Allan a more difficult assessment:

The fact that there is only a small sample size of his games in his new midfield role at season end.

His style of play is not typical, as not many players 194 cm play that sort of role at the next level so any comparative comparisons are hard to find.

In many ways his combine results have catapulted him into much more favourable draft calculations.
His sprint times at the combine surprised me as it’s not that noticeable in games. He obviously has pace, but the blister jet burner pace of a kid that runs 2:81 isn’t that much of a game day stand out.
You can look at that in two ways
1. He hasn’t developed that side of his game yet, that’s a +.
Or 2. He doesn’t know how to utilise the skill set and that’s a - .

His agility score, however, didn’t surprise me at all as that’s already evident in game vision, he regularly gets himself both in and out of some very tight situations, it’s a point of difference that is rare for players over 190 cm.

To be honest pre the combine I had him sitting in the 35 onwards range.

But here is the dilemma in being able to analyse all the bits of the jigsaw puzzle.

When a kid grows 20 cm and puts on 20 kg in a relatively short period of time, and has only played a very small sample size of games at his new dimensions and in a new role, there is a lot more guess work needed in the projections as to what he might end up being.

If he stays much the same as he is now,
then he projects as a big tanked tall wingman that has a 50 / 50 % chance of making it.

However ( and here is the enticing bit) if he improves as much in the next 12 months as he has the last 12 months, then he will be a seriously good player with a unique skill set for his body type.

Apologies for such a long answer, but it wasn’t a simple question to unpack.
Could Allen be developed into a Blicav's swiss army knife type? That's the player i think of when think of his size and athletic profile.

Busslinger at 9 and Allan at 13.

Think they prefer Ginbey still. I'd still take Phillipou :tearsofjoy:

Phillipou seems to be the consensus preference for most Eagles fans. Makes sense as he has a lot of upside and we need a powerful attacking mid. Haven’t heard of us being linked to him at this stage. Not unusual still being 5-6 weeks away from the draft I guess.

Phillipou strikes me as the annual 'BF must have' that our recruiters will have no interest in.

I can’t remember the last time the Eagles went for the obvious/consensus pick since Sheed. Last year most thought it would be Johnson (once Freo ruined our plans taking Erasmus).

West Coast thought Freo were taking Johnson and Erasmus was our first choice. Hence the draft slide as we knew we'd get Chesser.

Averaged 21 disposals for WA in the u18 champs. Not huge but he did get the WA MVP and make the AA midfield.

Yet the only standout midfield game by any of WAs mids was Hewett vs vic metro when he dominated.

Hewett was quickly relegated to the HFF after that game

As mentioned Ginbey has had good growth this year, and has come from relatively no where. Looks to be continuing to grow too.

Phillipou is the exact same journey, came from no where exploded onto the scene this year and has been really dominant.

To me Poo is a better footballer, better skills, kicks goals, strong overhead where Ginbey has strong athletic traits. Poo is quick has a good leap, good mix of contested game and outside game - obvious choice for mine.

So what if Hewett thinks his s**t doesn’t stink, just get him hooked up with an absolute stunner so he can just go home and shag when he’s not playing footy, that’ll keep him out of trouble for a while.
Since when has shagging an absolute stunner kept anyone out of trouble?

Surely Hawthorn would take him
Hawks want a second inside mid to lead their midfield with Ward..
Agreed, he's just not they type of midfielder they need right now. They'll want a contested player, MacKenzie or Clark I think.

I know MacKenzie isn't a true contested player but he does win it out of traffic and then use well by foot.

To me it's a case of if their first priority after being a contested player is skills then Mackenzie is the man.
If they want more consistancy, lower skills and a lower ceiling it's clark.
If they want an absolute bull at the contest then it get's very interesting and here is where we are talking about my potential huge surprise for a top 10 pick from when i mentioned it.

Don’t reply if it’s Mitch Szybkowski. He also matches with you saying he’s hardly been mentioned on this board.

D ‘Aloia?

Ive read that we’ve had multiple discussions with all of Clark, Humphrey and George so far. So to think we aren’t happy to cast our net beyond our own backyard is pretty close minded.

I’m hoping George slips to Pick 20 ..

Phillipou looks to me the only interstate player who isn’t a piece of horse droppings

Has the attitude to be successful

No. Blicavs an elite national level steeplechase competitor prior to starting with Geelong. That's running a 3000m race jumping over a horse hurdle once a lap in 8minutes 30 seconds or better. To put that in perspective he would run 2km in 5minutes 40seconds. And he did this with yrs at junior training and 3 yrs of training as an adult b4 cats rookied him at 21. He's a freak.

I wouldn't be disappointed if this was how it turned out;

Pick 8 (9) - Humphrey - Mid/ Fwd
Pick 12 (13) - Hewitt - Mid
Pick 20 - Allen - Mid/ Utility
Pick 26 - Konstanty - Small forward

OR

P8 - Humphrey/ Phillipou
P12 - Busslinger
P20 - Hewitt
P26 - Konstanty

Would be a pretty good haul too.

One of Humphrey/ Clark/ Phillipou/ Mackenzie should be available at our first, I would go Humphrey, Phillipou, Clark, Mackenzie in my order of preference.
Busslinger if available at 12(13) would be tempting although I would only do it if we were confident we could get Hewitt at 20.
Allen may be a tad high a 20 but its hard to get a read on where he should go now.
Need a KPF as well, looking to next years draft maybe Curtin could be an option.
Prob need another ruck as well but with Bailey Williams, Jack Williams and Jamieson all developing rucks still on the list do we want another right now? Could we pick up someone more experienced through trading or FA when NN hangs up the boots instead?

I could see it happening if the start of the draft panned out something like this;
P1 - Ashcroft (BL)
P2 - Cadman (GWS)
P3 - Sheezel (NM)
P4 - Wardlaw (NM)
P5 - Phillipou (ESS)
P6 - Ginbey (GC)
P7 - Tsatas (HAW)
P8 - Clark (GEE)
P9 - Humphrey (WC)
P10 - Mackenzie (STK)
P11 - Hollands (CAR)
P12 - Busslinger (WB)
P13 - Hewitt (WC)
