Be interesting to see the response - was the Adelaide disgrace like our Round 4 2012 against a juiced-up Essendon that signaled the start of the downfall for that squad and Brett Ratten

..or is it the 1995 Swans/St. Kilda consecutive losses that start a run of 16 wins and a flag

--or Option 3 - none of the above !!
Hard to know. Up to the players. But it still early in season and early season form can be very misleading as to what a season can become and that was when it was a 22 home and away season. We have 23 matches now so 5 out of 23 is not much, even though in the now, 5 rounds can still seem meaningful.
Five rounds in season 2000, we had only two wins. As season went on we would actually be on a 13 win run at one point so I'm not getting too caught up in present as to what this season will become as it all unfolds. The chapters are still to be written and it up to our own club to decide what it wants our story to be in the many chapters ahead for this season.

As down as we all seem to be about our team, we're actually favourites going into Sunday's match. Now, this might change depending on the INs and OUTs, but we're definitely a decent chance to win this match.

If no other reason than we play our best footy (under Voss) at Marvel, let's get more optimistic.

Not sure why we're all doom and gloom in here? Sure we severely unperformed last week and were shown up by a team that wanted it more but off days happen.

If this becomes a trend and we get belted again this week I'll start panicking, however, I'm willing to back the team to bounce back this week.

Reality is we're 3-1-1 in a slightly prolonged season and we're nowhere near hitting our straps. Look back at the first 10 rounds of the recent premier's and you'll find quite often they are just going at this point of the year.

Plenty of time for improvement and I'm keen to see how the boys respond.

Difference in 2000 we had seen our sides best the first 2 rounds before we lost the plot for the 3 weeks after, we knew that side could be one of the best though.

This side, we have no evidence that we are any better than middle of the road. We have won 15.5 of 27 under boss which is okay, but we keep thinking we will get better but maybe this is just what this side is?

Which goes into mixing it up, we looked better when our hand was forced to mix up the midfield last 2 rounds last year. Doch, Williams and Gov all missing v Adelaide when we lack good disposal by foot and the dash Doch gives us we’re big blows, as we lack in all those areas.

We still have an unbalanced list, though I think we recruited well last year with Acres, Hollands, Cowan and hopefully binns.

For the never ending Dow discussion, we can and will give him more chances, but I personally think he gives us more of the same, except not as good. However if we are playing Hewett and Cripps who aren’t fully right instead of resting them for Dow, I disagree entirely with that.

Due to our lack of half forwards, small forwards and outside running types, guys like Fisher don’t have the competition for spots they should, and others like Honey and LOB get games when they’d be nowhere near it for the majority of sides we are looking to go past on the ladder.

Even at 8-2 last year we were blasting sides away with a quarter or two of great footy and hanging on rest of the time.

I've got to be honest, I'm not even that concerned with our performance. I'm always excited for us to play footy regardless of whether I think we will win/lose/draw or factor in at the latter half of the season. I am a little concerned that we won't knock over the Saints and if we don't, I'm worried about our finals chances. However, that doesn't make me any less keen to watch the Baggers week in, week out.

I disagree.
We only showed a different level of side well into 2000 and the first few rounds of most seasons for most clubs can be very misleading.
The important thing from the inner sanctum is to learn from early mistakes and adjust big time to find a better structure , make up and method that works. That may or may not mean wholesale change. But it does need change because what we been doing has not been working at all. Five rounds in, truly is bugger all, but more importantly very early in a season campaign that goes 27 to 28 weeks if you get it moving in right direction.
I will be watching on closely in next two to three weeks what changes we make in ball movement and method in particular because that was obvious to me in the pre-season match I attended at Blacktown that is was horrid. I was hoping that was just pre-season junk but it turns out it was how we have started the season. If we do not change that, we are going nowhere. I would hope as we speak the players and coaching staff are addressing it and training for a major shift from that crap. Five matches in, is good feedback and a chance to really re-set. I am really hoping our inner sanctum have seen this as a great opportunity to re-set big time.

How the hell are we favourites? They are top of the ladder, have more wins and a percentage of 144 vs our 96.

I know they have injuries, but that hasn't stopped them much until now, and so do we. Seems Bizarre.

Maybe I just need to be more positive....
Nope -it’s a good question.

We are unders in this one

I think it's more because we've just looked broken at times.

Start of last year, we were a bit up and down (and only really squeaked past Hawthorn and Port) but showed a lot. When our midfield put the hammer down and got it in quick we looked like Melbourne's premiership team the year before .

Somewhere mid last year we got spooked and started playing an extra man behind the ball; this made us a bit more robust defensively but we've lost our attacking mojo since. Since our 8-2 start last year, we've only scored 100pts twice in 17 matches (vs West Coast and North) - compared with 6x in the first 10 rounds. We're struggling to move the ball, struggling to score, look slow defensively and seem to be relying on superstar efforts from the big forwards, Cripps/Saad/Docherty to be competitive... and now Docherty is injured, Saad perhaps as well...

That 3-1-1 is nice on paper, particularly if there is scope to improve. But the teams we have beaten are currently 10th, 12th and 13th, and we drew with 15th. Our loss was a big one to 7th - which suggests we should be somewhere 8th-9th. If you go by percentage (which can be a good way of judging early in the year when the fixture is lopsided) we should sit 10th.

That's not meant to be doom and gloom - but I think we all hope to be a bit better than 9th-10th this year.

I think the Adelaide loss wasn't nearly as bad as it looked, to be honest. We started very poorly after travelling, on our second consecutive 6 day break, after brining in 3x underdone midfielders (and totally messing with the setup from the previous week), losing Docherty in defence, and playing in a weird Thursday gather round match. The stars were aligned for that to happen, really. In the second and third quarter we took control of the game and had the better of it but couldn't really bridge the scoreboard gap, and they blew it out a bit as we put the cuein the rack.

In the end the big loss might be a good thing because it'll hopefully spur some positive change. i don't think we played much worse than vs North, but if we were really gelling we would have beaten North by 9 goals (as we did 2022) rather than 4... the Adelaide game just highlighted some issues that have been there all year imo

I laugh when I see discussion around tackling, especially in the current era

We sit 13th, Pies 9th, Saints 14th, Crows 15th, Lions 18th

Some of our players that avg 2 tackles or less a game. Doc, Acres, Jsos, Fisher, Saad, Owies, etc

Some players from other clubs, Breust, Spargo, Gresham, J Cripps, Butters, Rayner, Close, Papley, Walters, etc, etc

Game is more about pressure and turnovers
And you think we do this well?????

If Saad doesn’t make it up for this game, thoughts on trying Fisher off half-back?

Could be exactly what he needs to get his season going. Help him find a bit of the ball, adds a bit of zip, flair and a neat sidestep. We are sorely lacking creativity off half-back at the moment. Without Saad, I’m not thrilled at the idea of Cincotta coming in unless it’s at the expense of Cowan who may need a rest.

I thought we'd lose vs. Adelaide and we did. Not a big deal - we're not the last team who will lose to Adelaide in Adelaide this year. That was a rare blockbuster for them and we played like we had a distinct case of blockbuster fatigue.

I think we'll beat StK this weekend but Ross will make it a slog and it will be close. If we kick straight we should win by 4 goals - have a night off in front of goals and it will be another tough loss like last year.

Hopefully Saad and Gov get up for this one.

It's often the case, the way you finish a game the previous week, seems to rub off onto the next week.
Last week's 1st quarter was one of the poorest showings I've seen from the Blues.
North kicked the last 4 goals of the game, leaving us with a modest 23 point win. We kept the same form line into the next week against the crows.
Hard to explain this phenomena. I am expecting a big response, but still not confident against the Saints.
They have the wood on us.
I hope I'm wrong. A win against the new look Saints will be a huge confidence boost.
Go Blues.

Crippa is not the same player this year as he was this time last year, not sure what is going on but I think there is an injury that's not being reported......
I think it just our clearance numbers outside his own are that bad he can't get into the game with effect and can't just move fwd at will like last year -- once the ball goes the other way he already chasing -- he might not be a defensive runner but still has intent as his tackle number a good .. like other he has been fumbly at times .. we would be better off TDK play defensive ruck and we play to Oppo ruck as we playing to win but getting smashed on hits to advantage ..

Was not surprised at all by the Cows loss. They are a team on the up, with basically a fit list and were always going to be really up and about, considering they were starting off gather round in front of their fans.
Things that concern me.
1 Why are they playing George when he is clearly under duress with his broken hand?
2 Why when we are crying out for some run and carry out of defensive 50, not play Cincotta. He is playing great in the two's and has a bigger body and ready to go. Surely he debuts this week.
3 Kemp is another one, good form in the two's. Especially if McLovin is not fit, he should play in defence.
Actually even if Jeremy is right to go, I would play him forward in Jacks role. He can't do any worse, in fact I would back him to do better.
Coming down for this one, first time this year. Was at this game last year where they beat us on the spread, but we basically shot ourselves in the foot by being so inaccurate.
Blues by 16.
