We have had a horrible system of kicking up the line out out of defence, and hoping it goes over and results in a stoppage, for a decade.
Unpressured possession into at best a 50/50 contest for no legitimate reason.

Brilliant.

True. This is why i go on about stability and the constant changes of coach.

That was Bard's system back in the meat grinder days. Our older players especially revert to it under pressure because its what they've trained the most and the most consistently over their careers.

But to a degree all teams do it under pressure. Its how teams force turnovers.

Our young players often try to take the ball 45 deg inboard at the HBF but flat footed targets and poor skills mess with our conficdence and we often revert to the long down the line stuff as a result. More movement to provide options would help.

Agree. The tactic is sound if you are confident you’ll win the clearance and second possession more often than not.
We currently don’t do that, and our defensive structure isn’t up to standard when we don’t.

At the very very least, even if my emotional wellbeing is in tatters (not solely due to footy but footy makes up a decent chunk of the reason why), and even if my resentment towards some of our players for their shameful performances on the weekend is threatening to boil over, some ****ing continuity with a decent man manager in an allegedly positive headspace should do the club good

Interesting that he named his specialists but the media aren't jumping all over themselves to fingerpaint the specifics of what he was dealing with (unless i've just missed it). Scared that going into private medical info will play badly for them? Whatever the reason, it would be nice if they could continue restraining themselves from being their usual cretinous selves.

Regardless of all that... Welcome Home, Clarko.

His health condition (Guillain-Barré syndrome) isn't a secret.

He might've had a flare up that contributed to the decision to take time away. So glad he is back.

Exactly. Comes down to laziness and not running into space.

First of all: Welcome back Al and thanks to Ratten for taking on a tough job that he didn't sign up for.
Secondly: If we are competitive or by some miracle win - how quickly do we get the pyre lit for Ratt's ceremonial - and literal - burning.

Round 15, 2014. Our embarrassing loss to Brisbane.

Petrie gets criticised for not taking the shot for goal in the dying seconds. Boomer's spot is questioned, players commitment is questioned... we cop a hiding in the media.

Guess who we had next? Hawthorn on a Friday night. Petrie absolutely destroys Lake, Boomer goes on a rampage, Hansen is a rock down back, we completely open up Hawthorn in the 3rd, we bully them all night, and then finish off convincing winners.
Heading to the replay as I type this.

Welcome back Clarko.

For all the gallivanting around the world learning off the best etc, he was always going to need a proper reinvention as a person to be a success here, and now he's had it.

Its good, because blokes of his age don't tend to go big into proper self reflection and change. If we (and he) thought 2013 Clarko was coming into Arden Street, we were kidding ourselves.

I love that he mentioned great names from our club, and the implied reverence for our history, in his letter.

He wants to build a culture of Shinboners, guys who understand they're in a direct line from Les Foote and Laurie Dwyer and Keith Greig and Matty Larkin and Stevo etc and who will want to leave something amazing for the kids who come in when they're putting up the hand to retire like Ziebs has.

Or Round 14, 2015. The Phil Walsh round and with Crocker at the helm Coming out of the bye to be thrashed by nearly 10-goals by bottom-of-the-ladder Suns.

Came out the next week and torched Geelong. Six goals up at half-time never in doubt. Every player bar the bloke subbed out got 10 possessions. 11 goalkickers, Boomer started as the sub, a real team effort where everyone stepped up. Didn't lose again until Round 22. Haven't beaten the Cats since.

Whilst losing to bottom teams was an unfortunate feature of those days, at least it galvanised the group. They hated losing and when they did, they did something about it. Nowadays it sheepish grins, bum taps and "not our day" social posts until the next thrashing 7 days later.

We beat the Cats in a final later that year, how could you forget.
