ESPN trade review

Port Adelaide

Incoming: Esava Ratugolea (Geelong), Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (Essendon), Ivan Soldo (Richmond), Jordan Sweet (Western Bulldogs)

Outgoing: Xavier Duursma (Essendon)

2023 draft selections: 73

The Power enjoyed a great 2023 season but really needed to address their leaky defense, which ultimately cost them in September. The additions of Esava Ratugolea and Brandon Zerk-Thatcher should do just that, partnering Aliir Aliir in the backline. Ivan Soldo is still just 27 years of age and will provide ruck support, another area which the club struggled in last year. The loss of Xavier Duursma is hardly concerning, given his drop in form throughout the 2023 campaign. And with only pick No. 73, Power fans don't even need to bother tuning into next month's AFL draft.

Visentini won’t get a game. Bookmark it. His development will be thrown in the bin.
Whilst I agree that Visentini won't get a game, I disagree with the development part. He needs to spend more time in the SANFL, another year in there would be good for him. He needs to reach the level of dominant there whilst making an impact around the ground in marking contests.

The other positive that I think is often heavily overlooked, is training levels. When you stack the squad with more mature, better players, bigger bodies, it is a far better environment for Visentini to train and develop in than training against rookies or pick 1265's that will never be capable AFL players. For Dante to have Jordon and Ivan as training partners for the next few years will be great for his development and it'll also create a great competitive environment for the other 2 as well. Go back a year or two ago and we had an experienced Lycett beating up on the twig that was Dante and junior Hayes. That would've undoubtedly hurt Lycett's ability to keep his level up.

It's also one of the reasons why personally I'm 100% in the camp of retaining depth and players longer than we should on lists, and having them slowly fade away, rather than huge list culls which can set back that internal competition and list depth significantly.

Yep. If you drew up two lists of the top 15 (maybe even 20) best tall and small forwards in the competition, we may not have a representative in either. Good not great is exactly right, as is the lack of a 40+ goal per year forward since Dixon’s All-Australian year.

Our 2004 premiership team had the game’s best player at FF-CHF, and Pickett and Wanganeen to threaten at ground level and break games open. We’re miles from having a forward line that dangerous.

Marshall, Georgiades and Lord are all destined to be good (at best), not great. That’s the level of Finlayson and Dixon too.

Rioli and SPP aside, our other current small forwards aren’t worth discussing.

All of Marshall, Finlayson and Rioli kick 40 this year on a per game average if they played every game.

What we don't have is the big gun that can kick 60+. Or actual small forwards except Rioli

We are really not going to be able to rate the 2023 trades until the end of 2025. If these trades do not result in us winning some finals over the next two seasons our 2023 trade activity will be a fail. Sooner or later we will pay a price for a bubble in which we had three successive low activity Drafts. Let us hoe we can get a Premiership before that bubble catches up with us.

Good point about the compromised Drafts coming up. That will probably make matters even worse for us.

Butters and Rozee are 25 years old in 2025 there's no way he is getting a free pass until then.

He has purged our draft hand until 2025 and that means I want to see near immediate improvement but of course what will happen is we won't make the 8.

The additions to our backline aren't world beaters, but our issue has been the collective rather than the individual.

These guys need some proper direction, but I don't see things improving if we're going to promote from within.

Great post. You make a lot of sense.

Soldo essentially could play the role we had Finlayson playing but better.
A) No he couldn't, not even close
B) The entire reason he requested a trade here is so we'll play him as first ruck and not in that role.

Not over pay for players?

What did people honestly think we could get Sav and Soldo for? I think must people thought Sav worth a pick in the 25-35 range. Soldo we overpaid but it’s not a huge cost. Sweet we got for what’s about right, maybe slight overs. BZT for Duurs is unders for us but not by heaps - what does Duurs net us in picks, maybe 25-35 going on what other wingers have been traded for. BZT probably worth 30-40. For perspective, the pies picked up Schulz for a first rounder. And the draft hands of the Hawks, Tigers, Cats, Freo and Saints are crap considering where those lists are at.

And I reckon Handy might be a Hinkley fan, just seems to really back the bloke.

As to this BS about not drafting or developing talls, well it’s interesting how Hinkley doesn’t back or develop talls and yet played Teakle over Lycett. Just cause he doesn’t play your choice of tall… Besides the talls at Collingwood, Dees, Cats were all home grown and they didn’t trade in what they needed at all. Gees a tall father son or academy grad or generation talent would be nice. Maybe we don’t trade or draft em, just need to get all the old 100+ gamers into the sack and start producing!

And Clurey, Pasini and Hayes got zero interest through the trade period. Considering we needed picks, I’m sure we would have been happy for them to go. Sweet played the same number of games as Hayes, also out of contract, lots of clubs desperate for rucks, Sweet had interest but Hayes…? Same with Pas and Cluz, not even a token offer of a fourth or fifth rounder.

Our list management isn’t perfect but think it’s actually pretty good and I think they did what we needed them to do.

Was the club interested in RHys Matheison a while back?
Honestly we could probably do worse than building up the depth of our midfield with some mature talent this year given we won't be bringing in much top end talent the next couple years. I'd personally be happy to pick the best mature ager or delisted player that we can find.

Out of interest, what did people want us to do this off season?

Rucks and KPDs were a weakness. Yes we need a small forward, wingers and an inside mid for depth but we are more equipped in these areas.

There weren’t many good talls out there. Grundy didn’t want to come and the rumour was that McKay wasn’t serious about leaving Melbourne. I would suggest we got the next best group available.

What did we expect to pay for these players? Bearing in mind that this draft is considered poor with a good 15-25 and a crapshoot after that and most think that 50 players will get taken.

We also had few players of trade worth.

It would have been nice to have kept next year’s first. Soldo and Ratugolea for it is overs for those players but we didn’t have much else to work with. Couple of picks in the forties for Sweet (well that’s sort what it amounted to) was about right. BZT for Duursma, it’s unders for us, sad to see Duurs to go, but don’t think we lose much or missed out on much in this trade.

But keen to hear what people think we should have done instead?

sack hinkley

With the 4 coming I might of been more excited if they were coming in with a new coach.
Will it get me to become a full game membership holder
Nope that won't happen until doughnuts is gone and my beloved Port Adelaide is back again

We should grab Fergus Greene as a DFA
