I hope I’m doing this right. Here is the URL (I think) for a pretty illuminating article from The Age. Hope it works

Saving football: New documents reveal how close the VFL came to shutting down

TLDR?

Then try this snippet

Graeme Samuel, then a VFL commissioner, said it was dark days for footy.

"The total competition had net assets of about $4 million including Waverley Park – half of the clubs were bankrupt on any analysis," he said

$4 million for everything. The entire VFL.

The Eagles and Bears put up $4 million each.

So the VFL survived.

What was the feeling of the general WA footy fan at the time??
Was it excitement and was everyone too foolish to see that join a bankrupt competition probably wasn’t the smartest move??

I recall around my way (Claremont area) it was generally excitement.
Probably was mainly due to not knowing all the facts and being quite young!

I remember the feeling that the VFL were destroying the WAFL, sucking all the best players out.
It was a case of "if you can't beat them join them".
And yeah there was excitement that we were going to take on the best teams in the land.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

The best result would have been to let all the state leagues die.

I have zero doubt a genuine national competition would have arisen from the ashes and very quickly.

but muh suburban comp 1930's flags!

Big lol at the thumbnail Backchat has for the live pod tonight

Lol I don't think he HATE hates the Eagles. They deserve to get their right whack with how pathetic they've been the last three years. But he has gone extra spicy on them more often than not. And even gave the Eagles fans and players a little prod at the start of the week saying they're carrying on and being too happy after a win...like we haven't won a game in over two months or something.

I didn't listen to the podcast that riled up so many but I did listen to the Thursday version in which he addressed the complaints. His take was pretty much we are a shit club who have won a handful of games in 3 years.

I think he's missing the point that after such lean times fans would expect to tune into footy media to hear something rarely positive about their club and he's put the boot in because reasons? Petty enough of a bloke that he's sooking about TBs situation and it'll continue until the end of the season, at which point he's already been informed his services will no longer be required.

Bit of a shame, I thought his content has been largely decent, fair and WA centric but he's lost his way a bit this season just as it feels we've turned a corner, and I've tuned out several times where I used to listen religiously.

Similar to you, been a very regular listener over the last couple of years but that's definitely dropped off the last couple of months. The best content recently has been the Path to Paris pods with Mark Foreman (Wallys son), they have been excellent. Full credit to Schoey for providing a platform for those.

Nothing against this bloke, I’m sure he’s a perfectly nice guy and he might even be good at his job (has the social media presence of a bloke who’s dead serious about it, one post in total and it was 18 months ago…)

But ****ing hell the length to which they’ve gutted that news room and replaced them with an army of cheaper, less experienced kids from the country is alarming.

I'm more alarmed I didn't know I could've bought blocks of land for $1.

How to I subscribe to this bloke's newsletter?

I honestly don't mind his potting the club recently, we've deserved it. My issue is that he sounds like a miserable git who doesn't enjoy footy. He honestly reminds me a bit of Garry Lyon as a caller.

A casual pot is fine, the shelter footy cast on Monday was s**thouse... Never sounded more like a sacked player with an axe to grind. I've been a long-time listener as I spend a lot of time in the car but his last couple of months have been trash.

We've earned our fair share of potting for sure, but who asked for a three year rolling analysis hot take off the back of a good win? He's just trying to protect and cuddle up to his Freo audience as they look to be finalists. No different to two seasons ago releasing a heap of merch to make money off those bath water drinking plebs when I think he knew as well as the rest of us that the weight of expectation would eventually fold them.
