Had my first visit to the SCG for this game in many years. It really is a beautiful ground and the atmosphere is wonderful. It also helps that I was able to watch the game from behind glass...
I have to applaud Hayward. He played better than I've seen him play for a few years and, as the replacement for Heeney, he filled the role by kicking 3 and almost taking a kamikaze mark. Well done, that man.
It was obvious in the last quarter that the giants outnumbered us at every contest. If there was a contested marking situation, they always had 2-3 players cleaning up out the back.
They simply outplayed us, but we will be back.
Oh, and there was a huge momentum shift as soon as Hickey came off. I think we may struggle for a little while, now. I just hope that sinkers has had a good rest.

Wow!!!This is all a little of the top, don't you think? Admittedly it was disappointing, but the season is not over yet!

What's our average age? 19? 22? whatever it is, it's very inexperienced... we are going to have our ups and downs!

We were never going to win every game, and we dropped this one... oh well, on to the next one!

On the positives...

*Hayward had a very nice return... played well, should keep his spot for the time being...

*Buddy was imposing, took marks and kicked straight... nice!

*Reid once again had a really good game...we could have used two of him!!!

*Melican did pretty well and was certainly winning the contest with his man in the half, he had a few kicks he'd like again, but really, did well imo

*Hickey's done a PCL and we'll need to wait on the grade before we know recovery times, but no use moaning about it, we'll use Sinkers, and perhaps Crayfish if he's ready... really nice to have a spare up our sleeve!

*Heeney's likely to be back in 3-4 weeks, so we've an ace up our sleeve

*Rampe's likely to be back next week or the week after so there's another ace!

We're all good people, remember that the 'experts' were touting us for bottom four, and there's precious little chance of that happening, but these kids are going to have off games, that's how they learn and gain experience... and that is going to affect how the team performs...

Did we though? Is there something wrong with the Mic's at the SCG? Doesn't come through to the TV at all I don't think. <<<<<<There's probably an AFL conspiracy in there somewhere
On TV I thought there was big roar in the last quarter, but yes an AFL conspiracy!

Scoreline flattered us.
You know what... I think that's rubbish!

For most of the game we held them, in an extremely physical and demanding game. I don't know if you could here the smack of bodies on TV, but at the ground, it was very clear and could be heard up in the stands (God knows how Dawson got up and walked away! And know one on here has even acknowledged it!).

Neither side showed very good skills for most of the game, both with decision making and implementation, and while they peppered away at the goals in the last, there was a lot of kick and hope about it... Our defence wasn't decisive, but they held for a lot of that game and got over run at the end.

At the end of the 3rd quarter, scoring shots were even... so they certainly weren't running away with it.

SYDNEY 3.3 6.4 8.8 10.9 (69)
GWS 1.4 3.7 5.11 9.17 (71)

It was disappointing, but we were definitely in control for most of that game, and if Hickey stays fit, then we win. Without him, Reid took up the slack, and we lost him as our outlet kick...

If you didn't, then it was the broadcast, not the crowd!

We were loud and proud... :)

Haven't seen the replay but was Blakey robbed of a mark before the goal to Greene?
Yes, I thought so... but it wasn't replayed so it could have the angle that I was looking from...

I thought Reid did as well as could be expected when he was pretty much forced to be our most important tall on the ground late last night. Playing ruck isn't new for him, but no doubt it would've been a challenge to be thrown into that role, late in the game when he was probably already cooked.

I have really liked how he's applied himself with gusto in every game thus far. I'm not sure what's brought it on, but it's like he's finally realised he won't break in every contest and has relished the "big fella" title.

I was surprised not to see Logan McDonald tried in the normal Sam Reid role late in the game (outlet kick/loose in defence).

Watching on TV he appeared to be on the bench for much of the last qtr and only 62% game time.
Now he might have been knackered, but I thought he'd at least make an appearance down back when Dawson had to go into the ruck (and certainly reference has been made previously that he has spent some time in defence prior to his drafting).

He had a quiet game, but somehow I don't think he would have been daunted by the extra responsibility of filling in for Sam as the 'floater'.

You'll be disappointed to learn that Buddy will be 'rested ' in our now time of need next week. The guy couldn't move in the last. We are parading him out at SCG games for pure marketing purposes to win tge crowds.
He won't play next week in order to be right for the next SCG game.
In the mean time, the other forwards have been drained of their confidence by having to move out of the way of the Buddy Show.
I only hope they can find it again next week.
Mate this is absurd.

The bloke kicked 5.0 and is our leading goalkicker having played 3 games.

Thought Melican had a decent game.

Melican 7 marks. Only Franklin had more for us. GWS tall fwds Himmelberg 5, Riccardi 3, Finlayson 1.
Melican 2 of the 7 marks were contested. Only Franklin had more (5) and equal with Hayward (2).
Melican 10 intercepts. Next best for us, McCartin & Dawson 7.
Melican 10 one-percenters. Next best for us McCartin 7.

Melican some howlers, which tend to stand out. But still 73% DE, better for example than Dawson, Lloyd, Campbell & McCartin.

Still hopeful that McCartin & Melican can be our KPDs for the foreseeable future.
Rampe back in as a 3rd 'tall' and a few players in the reserves who can hopefully provide options.
Yep I still prefer to have two key defenders and Rampe can play any role required for that particular game. He is the most flexible of our defenders as he can play on any type of player and be lockdown or rebounding. Doesn't make sense to have him playing undersized as a KPD every week although he can manage it. Particularly with Mills and Aliir not there we don't tend to have a specialist intercept mark, although Dawson can help in that role. We might lose a bit of run from defense but overall I think it works better.

Please Ted give it a rest!
We all know your anti Buddy stance and you are completely entitled to feel that way, doesn't seem to be many on here that agree with you, but it certainly is your right

BUT

ffs please stop going on and on and on and on and on about it!

I love most of your posts Ted and agree with most of what you say, even when you are disagreeing with other posters you are always respectful of their opinions and your posts are an enjoyable read, but I'm so over reading you bang on about how Buddy is to blame for everything from trouble in the middle east to global warming!

Between you and the tiresome old git that bangs on about JPK's worthlessness, you're doing my head in.

Talk about Aliir Aliir having an All Australian type of season. 10 intercept marks on the weekend to help Power win.

Still love to know why we traded this guy away so easily

We were coming up against Richmond, Rampe got injured. Aliir was dropped despite him being our tallest available player. Says all you need about his 2020 season.

It’s a shame as it’s the player role we need now to help McCartin and a role that has served us well for years.

From memory though it was no hicky etc if we kept but surely we could have worked something out

Is what it is now though

Aliir had 6 marks, 2 contested

Assuming you meant intercept possessions (not marks)

I love aliir and really miss him. I think port is showing what he can do when playing back as part of an organised defence. I've no doubt we could have utilised him like that.

Last year we just had too much need for him as a tall utility and threw him around the ground, it effected his form and he decided what was best for his career was to get out. I'm pretty disappointed that we couldn't be it, but getting Hickey out of it has been a real win. There is no way we manage to address our ruck without losing the points we need to match Campbell and Gulden last year without losing someone.

Carrying on like a pork chop instead of looking with clear eyes what actually happened is futile and frustrating.
