With all the talk of KK being a possibility for us to pick at 3 I was just wondering if Rahul (or anyone else that knows the draft well) could do a ranking of similar players (190ish utility with serious mid potential)? Any chance any of them are around at 18?

I reckon the Pies are incredibly keen on Freeman with #6. No inside word, but when they traded for pick 6 it was reported they were into Bontempelli and traded up so they could beat the Giants to snare him. The Giants had pick 1 and 2. The Dees on the other hand had just acquired Pick 9 and were very, very keen on Nathan Freeman. Now, the Pies have been linked to Freeman at 6 and Bonters is a chance at sliding to 10.
If Coll take Freeman at 6, the myth of Derek Hine being the godfather of recruiting as some like to believe will be put to bed.. Freeman has impressive combine numbers with his explosive pace and good endurance but it doesn't translate to the football field enough to be taken top 6.. Boyd, Kelly, Billings, Aish, KK, Sharenberg.. On talent alone he isn't anywhere near these 6..
Melb at 9 could be possible, although Salem seems to be shortening to go there. Personally i wouldn't contemplate taking Freeman until at least 12-13 at the very earliest, and I reckon Car at 13 sounds about right

I still wonder if Billings is the right pick for us, He is a fantastic player with an x factor that i think is seducing some people but i don't see how he meets our team need. I believe we need a midfielder "General" someone who will command our mids in the coming years i see Kelly and Aish as being able to do this but not jack.
(I wouldn't be upset if we do pick him though especially if he does turn out like Stevie J)

Of the utility type guys I'd personally have them
1. Sharenberg 190cm (should be a top 4 pick in my opinion, probably more 5-10 draft day)
2. KK 188cm (I'd have him 6-10, probably goes 4-5 draft day)
3. Bontempelli 191cm (like KK I'd have him 6-10, probably goes 4-10 draft day)
4. Lennon 187cm (I'd have him about 10 and will probably go around 10-12 draft day)
5. Acres 188cm (I'd have him around 12, he will probably go around 11-17) Hopefully not 17 :-(
6. Marsh 191cm (I'd have him 30-40, may go 17-30 range)
Unless we diverted from the popular consensus and took Sharenberg or KK instead of Billings at 3, the only one I see being available at our picks 18-19 is Marsh.. I'm not a fan of Marsh myself, so I wouldn't be happy taking him first round that's for sure

1. Lennon
2. KK
3. Scharenburg
4. Bonters
5. Acres (possibility at 18)

I'd put Dumont in there but he isn't 190 (more 187) and is already a terrific midfielder. Billings can be used off both flanks and there are a few later picks like a Reynolds, Marsh etc but I don't like them too much.

Acres still a chance to slide to pick 18. He's one of the more difficult guys to place in the draft. We'd need a few players like Jones, Marsh, Hartung, Dumont, Dunstan etc to be taken a little earlier than expected if someone like Acres is to slide. I reckon he's a small chance at pick 10 to the Pies than he may come into calculations with the Cats, Swans and Freo being the more likely suitors. They'd be the danger picks of taking him IMO.

Err, no we don't :( :p

We defiantly do. We need elite midfielders. Especially with pick 1-5 next year most likely being KPP

2009/2010 grand final midfield.
Dal Santo
Hayes
Montagna
Goddard

2019 Grand final Midfield

J. Steven
T. Curren

Fixed.

We will most likely grab a midfield general with our later picks, there will definitely be some quality around so I think grabbing the one player who is described as a game changer is a great pick for us.

Thanks for the replies!

I wouldn't be too opposed with us getting KK at 3 but if we think Acres is a chance to slip then I would hope we take Billings/Kelly instead. I think my ideal draft (not that I know what the hell I am talking about) would be Billings, Acres, Dumont, unless someone better really slides. I think that gives us a decent mix of players who can all play in the midfield but still bring something different to the team.

Surely at Pick 3 we will select (in order of preference)
Boyd
Kelly
Billings
There is no way we will roll the dice on a KK at Pick 3. He is a very nice player but he isn't in the same class as Billings, let alone in the same class as Kelly. The recruiters know they can't stuff up at Pick 3 so will just select the best available player.

In 2006 Geelong didn't make the top 8, the following year they won the GF by 120 points..!

So we shouldn't be worried about what can & can't be done from here, there or anywhere,

Be realistic about where our list is at,

Looking to always develop & improve all our players,

Put in maximum effort and never give up,

Results will look after themselves,

This is the coaching 'mantra' of Ken Hinkley & we all know the Port story of 2013, ;)

I personally think pk 3 will be a 'safe' choice, with either of 18 or 19 a bit 'different', FWIW

So you don't see Aish as someone we should be looking at for pick 3? I think he will become an elite player to the point where the pick for him Kelly or Billings is akin to the Hodge Ball Judd choice.

I have rated Aish one of the best prospects of this draft for 18 months and still personally like him but a lot of people in the know say he won't be top 3 anymore.

Realistically i believe we should be targetting the top 8 in 2016, the top 6 in 2017 & the top 4 in 2018..

the whole aish footballing family were skinny outside players no thanks.

Or we could look at it another way;

They were Creative, Intelligent, professional, goal kicking footballers, that never had the benefit of the complete training methods we see in AFL today,

Michael would have made AFL, had he chosen to,

Andrew, perhaps,

So, don't discount Aish jnr, IMO,
