Serious suggestion but what about Cam Delaney?

Is a very nice hbf in the mould of Roberton (CD is listed at 194cms and 91kgs) who will only be 22 at the end of the year.

If we are looking at trading out the likes of Gilbert and Gwilt to improve our draft position, there is every chance we could get Delaney Jnr on the cheap as he is a long way behind the likes of Hansen, Firrito, Dal, McDonald, Wright, Atley, MacMillan and Mullet in North's back flank rotation due to his awkward size.

They want him to play key post but he is much better used as the Sam Fisher type 3rd tall. He would get that chance with us if we are looking at trading our older 3rd tall/half backs out.

Thoughts?

I'd hope we're not targeting any more 'tallish' defenders/flankers when we already have Fisher, Roberton, Gilbert, Gwilt, Dempster, Simpkin, Webster, Newnes, Dunell, Wright, Murdoch, Acres and Shenton on the list. There's room for maybe four or five of those guys in a team. We need quality in the midfield and gun KPPs, not more flankers.

thought i would give u a flashback its a bit of story. im on a 2 day bender so bear with me. we were playing carlton at moorabin plugger kicked 10 on sos towards the end of the game fraser murphy kicked a goal crackef the shits started waliking to moorabin station get outside and a cabbie is screaming locketts got it this guy if he didnt have pants on he would have shot his load all over the window. so we run back inside as it happen jack daniels handball to winmar plugggggggggggggggeeeeeeerrrrreer. anyway run on the ground in the mayhem and i see buckets ran towards him to get a hug he shirtfronts me im laying on the ground semi concious. you see this is why we need to get back to our heartland.
I stayed in my seat Coops up in the Huggins stand, there was never any doubt we would finally knock the Blues off. One of the greatest games I ever saw at Moorabbin & I watched around 230 games there.. Though Plugger kicked 10.7 that day, SOS also played quite a good game also..When the club left Moorabbin for Seaford a few years back, part of the club died.! The Kingston Council & the state/fed govt's could develop an exceptional boutique sporting ground/sports complex if they were willing to provide the funding..The bayside area is screaming for a sporting facility like this.

I think you are also forgetting that we picked up Billy Longer who is a top 10 draft pick.

That gives us 5 of the 12 already.

Billings, Acres, Longer, Dunstan and Templeton. All 5 would be considered top 20 and 3 of them top 10 in some calculations (the first 3 listed).

3 picks will come naturally in the top 20 from the draft. Lets say 4 because we are likely to finish near the bottom and get 2x picks in one draft.

My concern is where the remaining 3 coming from? I can only assume that we will move on a bloke like Geary and a pick in return for a lower pick. Love Gears but is he a superstar? A club looking for leadership would leap at him. Just stirring the pot but I don't see a Dal like trade coming up in the next 3 years. Even then he only returned pick 25 ish and a 4th string defender.

we may have dodged a bullet here:

i really hope the kid gets better, but gee that dont sound good. from memory we were seriously considering him

I'm glad we avoided but I really hope it works out for him. That's rough.

Scharenberg is out till May because he is having sesamoid bones removed from both feet. He hasn't been able to run since August 2013.

I wonder if people will still think the Pies won last years draft/trade period?

Can't be judged in the short term, Berg could still turn out to be an absolute gun and a few clubs might be kicking themselves!? Too early ATM.

I was criticised for suggesting injury issues with some of the high rated guys worried me!
I just hope Billings holds together.

Yeah Berg might turn out a gun, but he's going to be months and months behind by the time he's out on the track again. Realistically he's not playing 2014 other than late season VFL minutes.

Pies will be seeing him as a long term investment and will make every effort to ensure he gets himself right.

If this was Billings, would you be worried about at what stage he plays in 2014, if at all?

I would if it's feet. Will likely have load bearing issues for a period where his body will be undergoing significant physical change. Far from ideal.

Pick 6 has had a pretty lousy run, some solid players but lot of injury-riddled careers. Jury's still out on the last few years (Conca, Wingard, Macrae, Scharenberg) but Wingard's looking like the best bet.

2000: Dylan Smith (11 games at North in 3 years, then 10 at Freo in 2 years) 3.6 games a year for North
2001 superdraft: Ashley Sampi (78 games at WCE in 6 years) 13 games a year
2002: Steven Salopek (121 games at Port in 10 years) 12.1 games a year, next pick was Jimmy Bartel
2003: Kepler Bradley (49 games at Essendon in 4 years, 68 at Freo since) 12.25 games a year for Essendon
2004: Tom Williams (78 games at Footscray in 7 years) 11.14 games a year
2005: Beau Dowler (16 games at Hawthorn in 6 years) 2.6 games a year
2006: Mitchell Thorp (2 games at Hawthorn in 3 years) 0.6 games a year, next pick was Joel Selwood
2007: David Myers (65 games at Essendope in 6 years so far) 10.83 games a year
2008: Chris Yarran (84 games at Carltank in 5 years) 16.8 games a year
2009: Gary Rohan (27 games at Sydney in 4 years) 6.75 games a year

Not exactly an inspiring list

Yes, it is still too early to tell but that doesn't stop a bunch of articles being written about who did the best out of the draft and trade period.

Most people seemed to have the Pies as the big winners of the draft and trade period so I was just wondering how much this would change peoples thoughts on that.

Yes, agreed.

Not doubting the concern for the type of injury, am pointing out it's too early to make a definitive statement and they are correct in thinking longer term for their first pick of 2013 ND.

I'd say the list since about 2008 has been pretty sweet. And Jimmy Bartel was taken in 2001 not 2002. (Just to further emphasise how ridiculout a draft it was)

Shazberg has heaps of time to get himself right though. He's definitely one player I'll keep an eye on as he and Bilings develop.
