"Our strategy includes increasing our draft activity by 50% in the first 3 rounds of the AFL National Draft over the next four years."
Chris Pelchen, open letter to members - 11 Oct 2013

That means more picks. Unless you trade out 1 pick for 2 or more lesser picks, that means giving up players.

I think I've been mixed up by posts on here over the top-20 picks; some of the media outlets were running that info even on the days after the 2013 draft, when I think the statement originated from the club's pre-draft strategy. So links to articles in late Nov and early Dec actually referenced more earlier club statements.
Therefore they might not be targetting a second 1st round pick next year. But they do want extra ones, so they will be either trading people or looking for comp picks (and I can't see any on our list providing comp picks in the top 40).

PS. Just to be pedantic, can you have a letter that is both to members and open? Was it not just an open letter to supporters, or just an open letter? A letter to members would be just to the members, same as a members-only invite to a club event.

"increasing our draft activity by 50% in the first 3 rounds of the AFL National Draft over the next four years."

Normal distribution is 12 picks in 4 seasons. Increase by 50% would result in 18 picks in top 3 rounds over 4 seasons.

We had 3 last year (note we didn't increase our draft activity at all last year, we just upgraded our 2nd and 3rd rounders into picks 18 and 19). So they need 15 in the next 3 years to meet his aim, that means finding 6 extra choices.

[I suspect that Longer was an unexpected bonus since it transpired after his letter, so we'd let them off with 17 picks plus Longer over the three years.]

Then there was the verbal statement, I think at a function, about proportion of picks in the top 20. But the only news publicly from the club have been the open letter and the "three top 20 in 2013".

As I say, I worry about the tactic of just wangling the market to get picks as if it's all just currency. You can trade and trade and find yourself upgrading 3 picks... then pick guys who would have been available anyway at your earlier pick. The best way to get a star is to pick high (especially with the GWS/GC concessions easing off) and/or to nurture them and find the perfect setting for them. I'd rather we had 5 top 3 picks over 4 years, than a rake of picks in the 20s. But it's unlikely, and to get those involves sustained mediocrity which I'm not a massive fan of!

I think it's also fair to say that we can add Eli Templeton to the mix, rated as a top 25-30 talent by many including us this year, great that we snaffled one when we didn't expect too.

Is there any word as to why he wasn't picked up? I know if we had another pick we would've grabbed him but seems odd 16 other clubs didn't want him

Pretty much just his size, if I recall correctly. That, and him bein
g from Tassie. Some recruiters fear that Tasmanian players are playing in an inferior comp: kinda middle fish in a very small pond, which makes them look better than they are. I disagree with them, but yeah.

He was quite small at the combine, weighed in at 76kgs if I recall correctly, however I believe he wasn't drafted due to some off-field issue.

Ah, yes, his hairspray addiction. Fortunately, he was able to overcome his problems, once the authorities found his pusher, and had him incarcerated:

Working through the likelihood of that though... I think Pelchen said no free agents in, until 2016 onwards.

Hawthorn are going to be loaded with $ and cap room by season-end, short of a capitulation this year I don't see why he wouldn't go there.
Now watch Sydney sign him on a 17 yr deal unwritten by the league...

Hawthorn are obviously very good but they're also very old. Going there would be risky because they could fall off a cliff at any moment.

Well I wouldn't have thought any one of us were in any position to be judging anyone, as none of us are perfect ourselves, but I'd also prefer everyone to just call it as they see it and tell us what they believe to be true (as this is a forum for honest discussion) rather than trying to sugar-coat things, or hold anything they know back, just because some struggle to handle it when anyone says anything about anyone else that is less than complimentary, even if it's .

I just hope these mystery people can be honest enough to admit they were wrong, when it inevitably happens.

True. But I'd reckon they would see him as part of the refresh, I have no doubt they'll be after a young mid too - we better make sure Jack is signed on by end 2015 or both Hawks and Geelong will be on him.

However if Frawley is going to pay that much attention to list over cash, wouldn't he be more likely to choose a club closer to it's window than us? Ours is so far off it's purely hypothetical, other clubs are about as young in terms of avg, but a lot closer to top 4.

Serious suggestion but what about Cam Delaney?

Is a very nice hbf in the mould of Roberton (CD is listed at 194cms and 91kgs) who will only be 22 at the end of the year.

If we are looking at trading out the likes of Gilbert and Gwilt to improve our draft position, there is every chance we could get Delaney Jnr on the cheap as he is a long way behind the likes of Hansen, Firrito, Dal, McDonald, Wright, Atley, MacMillan and Mullet in North's back flank rotation due to his awkward size.

They want him to play key post but he is much better used as the Sam Fisher type 3rd tall. He would get that chance with us if we are looking at trading our older 3rd tall/half backs out.

Thoughts?

I think you might be underrating Luke's little brother there. He's very highly rated by North supporters and most responses when they found out Delaney was being traded was 'thank god it's not Cam'.

But hells yeah, I'd be all for Luke using his brotherly charm to lure Cam over. Just not sure we'll have the pick to get it done (considering we're looking at cementing more top 20 picks this year, not less.
