I've never been one for taking other clubs rejects and always find it positive when a team fights to keep a player.

BUT, I have always rated Luke Thompson, or at least ever since I saw him in that final, I think it was a prelim a couple of years ago where he played really really well as a tall defender. Appreciate that I am not going off a lot but I have liked him for a while now. Would there be any interest in him on here as a delisted free agent? Or even as a rookie like Mav last year?

As far as tall defenders go, I still think our depth is very thin, if Bruce swings forward, we then have Delaney, Chips, Roberton, each of these guys battled injuries this year. I would love for us to rookie list him and wouldn't be disappointed if we put him on our list - obviously it's unlikely due to the squeeze of spots.

Crows supporters think he's crap I seriously doubt we are going to pick up a rookie listed player who has never cemented his spot. Smells like a simpkin esq player to me.

Also if you wanted a luke Thompson we were better off just keeping gwilt.

I would take Le grice instead tbh

Absolutely disagree about the leadership qualities of NDS and BJ and Fisher

Dal was in the leadership group sat StK for 5 years and is currently in Norths leadership group first year... They rave about his influence. Certainly more than a solid citizen as both a player and a leader... Much admired, calm, intelligent and a model citizen. A Robert Harvey type leader

Goddard was also a leader at StK from 24yo for years, he is now VC at Essendon and is an absolute Pro. Different to Dal he is competitive and demands success from himself and others. Absolutely intelligent, brutally honest and can show more emotion than Dal. He is similar to Bucks and influenced by Ross Lyon.

Fisher. Questionable? He is 32 and still very interested in the party scene... Good mates with Dusty, Buddy, The Push Up and Swanny... He was in the LG for 2 years before being demoted. He is an incredibly smart onfield performer... Off field he is shy in the media, and whilst he is a pro at the club... He has had some queries away from the club.

Big Mart, I think we both agree about Dal and BJ's qualities but disagree about the worth of those qualities.

I think you're spot on to say that Dalla's leadership is similar to Harvey's which was - IMHO - practically nonexistent. This is a fine distinction, but Banger set a great example, but he didn't lead by example. I think he was too much of a gentleman to demand excellence in others. Dal's a bit like that and, in addition, he is not nearly as consistent as Banger was. Dal still has a habit of getting tagged out of games (the fact that they rave about his leadership at North is a reflection on their leadership vacuum rather than on Dal).

I've nothing more to add on BJ except to reiterate that he is a real leader but also batshit crazy.

Fair point on Fisher, but he's certainly an on field leader who stands up at key moments (and, to clarify, he doesn't go missing like Dal and doesn't berate the young'uns like BJ). Gee he made a difference when he came back this year, and having him will help our backs, wings and half forwards develop because more opposition ball comes out of our back line with Chips in the side. And it doesn't just come out - it comes out accurately and aggressively.

Dean Gore...

183/86, 14.1 beep, 2.94 sprint, 72 standing leap. Playing SANFL seniors.

Personally I think we have enough tough inside blokes. Although he seems to have moved on from last year's issues at draft time - he still bombs the ball to nowhere - a lot.

A 196cm backman who has held his own when required to step up, honestly, watch the 2012 Prelim final between Crows & Hawks. I just read a thread on the Crows board from July this year and not one comment about him being crap, maybe something I don't know has happened between now and then. He was behind a number of players on the Crows list and it's fair to say that their KPP depth runs a lot deeper than ours. Apparently is quite quick, agile, has good composure and would only take a rookie spot to give us a little depth. I agree that the likelihood of getting him as a rook is extremely low, but I just think he is better than what he is being rated. Cmon Barrels, help me out bro he is 195+ ;)

Both Simpkin and Gwilt are undersized, which is their biggest downfall among other things but I'm not going to list them.

I haven't focussed on Le Grice at all as I only watch Sandy games to watch our listed players so can't comment on that, if he is a genuine talent then I'm all for it.

No dice. Skinny and a relatively poor 1-on-1 defender.

Sorry pal.

Luke Thompson is listed as 194cm & 88kg.

He is too skinny & pushed off the ball way too easily.
Yes he had a good game in the 2012 finals, but that's about it!

Yep. Same size as Robbo for comparison.

I've seen 194 & 196, but it matters little. He is a rookie spud who has played a couple of good games, I'll move on.
**** that! Stand your ground son...

#StandByMcKenzie

;)

What about Ed Vickers-Willers at say 22 ? Looks pretty confident & evidently good all around the ground, could he be the next Jason Blake?

Ed Vickers-Willis is my current school captain. Absolute top bloke, and very smart one at that. Likeable and humble in a very Blakey way. As for as a footballer... Can't help you. Goes by Vicko.

Not sure you can accuse Dal (three time AA) of going missing too often...

Berating is what's some soft kids need... BJ tell people how it is...

Saints supporters, do have a problem with reality occasionsally though?!

Fisher made a difference because he's as good footballer...

And why wasn't R.Harvey a good leader? What does a good captain do?
Lead by example on and off field? Tick
Step up in big moments? Tick
Not about him but team? Tick
Intelligent? Tick
Inspires team mates? Tick

A great leader gives respect, and has the respect of the players.... Robert Harvey I would suggest fit that bill

The fact it worked before for us and allowed the 2004 to 2012 highs shows it has some credentials.

My only issue with how things have panned out this year is I don't feel we have good enough 2nd 3rd or 4th picks.

In the build for 2004-12 there were priority picks. And two less clubs.
We won't see a chance of having 1, 2 and 17 again without some risky trading. People forget how much the landscape has changed.. Unless you do something drastic it takes a long while to rebuild.

If all we do each year is go to the draft with what we have, it's the same speed of list refreshment as everyone else. Yes we might back our staff to find good value, but we also know other clubs academy and f/s gives them great value picks too.
The only way to overtake clubs (and we need to go past everyone) is to get more good picks than them, sign a lot of top 12 or so talent in a short space of time, then develop it. It's putting all eggs in one basket but it's our plan and now we've started its the only choice really.

Actually feel that this year the AFL restrictions hampered us. Think GPS would have traded with a worthwhile deal if they were allowed to move next year's draft picks in deals. They have enough young talent now to be able to mortgage the future on getting better now.

Fully expect next year we'll have something ridiculous like 4 top 17 picks.

hows his coaching going

GWS, which ended up with three selections inside the top 7 – Nos 4, 6 and 7 – as a result of trading Tom Boyd to the Bulldogs and Kristian Jaksch to Carlton – was surprised that the Saints did not accept its offer of picks 4 and 7 for No. 1. The Giants were believed to be keen to draft powerful young midfielder/forward Christian Petracca at No. 1.

St Kilda's head of football Chris Pelchen confirmed that the Saints had rejected an offer of multiple first round selections for pick No. 1, but would not elaborate or discuss the specific GWS offer.

"We considered offers of multiple picks inside the top 15 and we decided that the player available to us at pick one still exceeded the combination of players later in the draft," said Pelchen.

Interesting, that article doesn't mention pick 21 being thrown back to Western Sydney. A straight trade of 4 and 7 for 1 is pretty fair, 4 and 7 for 1 and 21 tips it slightly in Western Sydney's direction.

Western Sydney's talking like they have a right to the #1 pick, that particular gravy train is over for now.
