I would take Shiel over Whitfield, but Shiel would cost far far more than Whitfield, ie: easily two 1st round picks & similar to the Pies/Treloar deal, whereas Whitfield would cost one 1st round pick with maybe a 3rd rounder as well

If we draft Wil Brodie at years end, then hopefully he would become our Dylan Shiel, which is why I like the idea of Whitfield. He won't cost as much & certainly fits a huge need on our list (elite outside skill & pace)
Lachie Neale would be close to the ideal mid we're looking for..
One of the most consistent mids going round, & will still be 23 at the start of next year.
Ticks many of my boxes, without the noise re what pick he was!!
Neale for Hickey is a starting point, with maybe draft picks shifted around.

Hickey is contracted so unless he agrees to be traded, it won't happen

its looking like theyve convinced both hooker and hogan to come to their club

They need them too, Hogan replaces Pav but even still that leaves them with one forward. Hooker replaces McPharlin or Johnson. That still leaves them wanting. Freo are in for same pain I think. Great group of mids but they need a lot more.

Just wondering if anyone knows where paul ahern from GWS contract sits at? Top 10 draft pick a couple of years ago with Chris judd like breakaway from stoppages and pace to burn. Decent skills and a goal kicker. Obviously coming off a knee reconstruction but the Giants can't fit them all in and maybe our third pick this year and our second next year could get it done?

Would throw lots at neale. Happy to trade hickey and Lee for him. Maybe steak knives?

wouldnt get it done and apparently the offer he has from another melb clubs is very big. i dont get why but it is what it is

i also dont think he's what we need. he's short and he's been made to look good when mundy, barlow and fyfe were firing around him. his kicking is meh, he's one paced. i'd rather our weller tbh. its like des headland at brisbane, just neale doesnt have as much talent.

End of next year

Contracted or uncontracted doesn't alter the issue.
The Dockers will be chasing a ready made ruck for next year, as will the Doggies.
My money is on Longer & Pierce moving forward, with Hickey expendable.
Longer has more influence on the ground, than Hickey ever will on a consistent basis.
The players walk taller when Billy is in the middle.

Sam Mitchell is one paced, & comparing the two at the same age Neale would be close to on par.

Just read in the age that OMeara is still a month away from light training and has requested at least a month in the reserves.

Sounds pretty scary- massive risk by the club that picks him up- could be a good one or a disaster.

Too much risk, if you were a team already showing a fair amount of promise with youth you might be able to afford the risk (Bulldogs, GWS, Gold Coast) but for us, we're still lacking a few things and can't afford the 10-1 shot of an elite player or injury wreck.

I reckon we want some speed and Lachie can win ball all day but he's slow. I would only want an imported mid if they are quick outside runners. We really need 2 more Jack Steven types. Whitfield and Kelly would be the types with higher ceilings than Neale and probably around the same price. Shiel would have been nice.

I think we look at the Dogs who have played risky and fallen on their feet. So far we have gone risky and ****ed it up. We can't really afford to take on another guy who might not play regular footy. We need to pay top dollar and get guys who are blue chip or find our own through the draft. His best footy is incredible but I wouldn't touch him because of injury.

Hopefully Freeman gets over his injury & forfills his talent because he's one of those Jack Steven types we desperate need.

Yes they may be chasing a ready made ruck, but because Hickey is contracted for the 2017 season, he can just say he doesn't want to be traded, and therefore the club cannot trade him at the end of this year.

If he agrees to be traded then all's good.

Bottom line is that a contracted player can't be traded unless they agree to the trade

What risks are you referring to that we stuffed up?

Cant see Pearce making it, but Geez the Sandy team looked so much better once Billy was moved from up forward to the ruck.

We hurry the process? Hickey and Billy can share ruck duties until the end of next year, by that time if Billy has grown enough, we can trade Hickey who will be coming into his prime and we will get a pretty good return for him.

And if Pearce is still coming along, all well and good.

Drafting can be a weird thing.
Back in 2010 we must have been so jealous, after making the trade we did, and seeing Melbourne with a guy like Gysberts running round picking up disposals and getting the rising star. They got him off the back of trading tired old Brock McLean.

Who'd have thought that McLean had more footy in him than Gysberts, and that we really should have been jealous of Max Gawn.
Daniel Rich, how does he stack up now compared to say... Rory Sloane.

How they go in their first year in just no indicator of how they will end up.

Just for you guys out there who are writing off some of our new newer recruits.

In the last few years we've seen teams step up and step down. We all know what path we are taking, but for next year, you always want to improve your list whether your the hawks and recruit Frawley Freo got Bennell, Cats got Danger etc.
This upcoming draft we don't have our second round pick, so effectively we will have pick (4-8) first round and third round somewhere in then 40s.

I'm worried that next year not having a second rounder will harm our ability to really improve again in 2017, I just think we will tread water again. I hope I am wrong.
