Assuming we get Fyfe (I am going early) I firmly believe we should see ourselves as in contention in 2018. We have Roo and Joey still playing good footy for at least this season and next. With this in mind, I would be happy for the club to roll the dice and have a massive crack at snagging the 2018 flag.

Which brings me to our favorite trading partner the Hawks. They are going to finish bottom 5 with no draft pick until the mid 30's. That is a tough pill to swallow. Desperation brings opportunity. The reality is everybody over 26+ with currency is probably on the table, including the likes of Cyril, Smith and Breust. Every year they wait these players lose currency. I don't think they can afford to not offer these blokes up for the right price.

Looking at our list there are just a few obvious holes remaining, but one of them is an elite small forward that applies pressure. Cyril is getting on, but we could get 2-3 more years of elite footy out of him. The question is, what would he cost? One of our first round picks seems too much given his age, but what if we could somehow manufacture a pick around 15-20? I would do it all day long. If we were to trade out 2, possibly 3 of Longer, Dunstan & Lonie I think we could probably snag a pick around this mark.

That might seem like overs to some, but they are all fringe players. Cyril for 2 years whilst Roo and Joey are still in the mix + Fyfe. OMG:rainbow:

Heard enough twangs from Cyril's hammies to not want any of that...

Yep - maybe not Rioli but def target whatever hole Richo thinks we have in our list and plug it
Personally wouldn't hate getting Gunston... I know we have a lot of marking forwards but having one of the most accurate set shots in the league as opposed to our current rabble might see us convert slightly more F50 entries

Besides the fact that his first name is Jack, I don't see any point in that. Membrey, who plays a similar role is only marginally behind him in all the stats even though he is 3 years his junior. This includes goal kicking accuracy which is almost identical.

We already have our number 1 pick playing in the VFL, he'd cost a first round draft pick and would make it a lot harder to fit a quality mid in the cap.

So Freo only need to match the total dollar value of the contract?
That doesn't sound right to me.
There's a small financial concept called: The Time Value of Money.
The contract is an annuity stream so $1.5M for 5 years is not worth anything like a front loaded contract of say $5M for the first two years and $2.5M for the last 3 years on a discounted cashflow basis.
Surely they have to match the structure of the cashflows as well or something similar to genuinely match the true value of the offer.

thats the role they play though? we want them because they are outside midfielders who would get fed the ball from the likes of steele and acres and thats what we need?
granted you don't want soft players who won't put their head over the footy when its their turn but i don't think they are

I reckon you need some inside ability still even if you are predominantly an outsider. Not winning your own ball means we need to have guys who can win it for them, at the moment we are lacking in guys who can do that to a high standard so Whitfield would be looking much worse at St Kilda than he does at GWS. Kelly I reckon has much more of an inside ability so won't be shown ups as much.

wow got the inbox, serious game of chess going on. they match and we miss out, i'd be hesitant to match the next god father offer made to the other sought after mid on their list. thats pretty much cap gone scenario
What's this info please -- pm?

But we won't get them for nothing.

Then we aren't using free agency properly. Fyfe would be pretty easy to match for Freo but they then have to keep a guy who has chosen to leave. Dusty would be easier financially as we could push Richmond's cap to breaking point as they are still paying for Deledio and got in Caddy and Prestia on good money.
