I guess that's the clincher right there. How much is too much? 12m over 9? It's starting to get there.

But then we have to consider: if he continues to trend in the same direction, and theres every indication he will, then 1.3m a year is pretty decent value. Im talking from a player / cost perspective. Obviously the trade cost is another matter but I would trust Ameet to perform magic there and somehow keep a first round presence.

The closest comparison i can think of is Robbie Flower with his skill and balance. Now, I'm not saying he will end his career being spoken of alongside Tulip, but who's to say he can't? He is so far away better than anyone his age right now. (Edit- probably a bit of an over rating of the kid but **** it I'm on a roll here!) ;)

For me, I want want want him. Thankfully the club think with clearer heads than I, coz right now I would probably cough up 15m just to lock him in! :)

How about our 2017 and 2018 firsts plus hickey with a 2nd back? Like I say.... thank God I'm not in charge!

Nick Dal Santo was talking about how to manage cap yesterday and pointed out that even with the new cap space it will be close to $12 million. It sounds like a lot until you say there are 40 or so on every list. If we pay $1.6 for one player it means there is $10.4 million left for everyone else. If we have now 5 players on $700,000 is another $3.5 gone so now done to $6.9 for the rest of the 34 player.

If Billings, Mc Cartin and Acres all come good and teams offer them $1.6 we have to come close to matching....say we give them $1.5 each to stay thats $2.4 for the rest of the list which is spread amongst the next 29 players. Which means the rest of the list needs to agree to play for about $82000 each if my maths work. I think that's like a starting rookie wage now. Guys who aren't A grade then have to play for that or move on. Doesn't sound like great list management.

How many flags has buddy won sydney?

I get how easy is to get carried away with an idea of a young champion player coming to your team. I get carried away myself, but theres no guarantees in afl.

If anything the whole world including some sydney fans were shaking their heads when they announced the contract. And in hindsight, there was reason. Players get pushed out.

Kellys a huge get but the club have to be reasonable.

The thing is Buddy is realistically the best player in the AFL ATM. We talk up the mids but for pure impact Buddy is underrated. He's your once in a generation type who will probably be in the conversation for legend status once done. Kelly is looking like a gun but he's more Pendlebury silk than carry the team on his back when a final needs to be won.

They are completely different players. Kelly is ideally an outside runner who is dished off to and runs and delivers. He's a great player with a high ceiling but the price is getting stupid now. It's like getting pissed at an auction and coming home with a signed poster that you thought was awesome the night before but you soon work out the $1200 you spent could have bought 10 on eBay. He's very good but there will be others who won't cost as much. He doesn't quite have the marquee thing happening either, at least Dusty is like a caricature with his OTT image and eye catching game. A good portion could come under marketing.

If a player like Kelly chooses us, then I dou t we will pay that much.

Here's why...

Firstly it means he has decided to leave and return home, which is half the battle.

Secondly, if he prefers us because of his best mate, then it's likely that money isn't the only motivator.

If it was purely money then he'd put himself out to the highest bidder.

Finally, clubs will up the ante if it's difficult to lure a player... so the less likely, the higher the bid to tempt him.

So if he (a) decides to leave, and (b) nominates us, then we don't need to get into a bidding war.

And frankly, if it was $1.5m we'd probably pass Luke we have with Fyfe. We have just shown common sense with Fyfe, so I doubt we will mess it up.

You're an individual. The St Kilda Football Club is 1/18th of a very high-priced product that the AFL sold to a couple of TV networks. There are huge contractual and financial repercussions for the AFL if the composition of that product was to change. So none of the clubs can go out of business, which means the AFL must bail out the poor clubs on a yearly basis. That effectively means they micro-manage club finances from headquarters; the clubs don't run themselves independently, but as divisions of the larger organisation.

And related to that, the AFL needs a good product, a competitive product. So it's in their interest to keep all the clubs competitive, not strong necessarily but competitive.

So we'll always be funded. We're not an independent business, we're an arm of the AFL, just like the other clubs.

Unless TV advertising revenue continues to drop to the point that competition stops pushing our perpetual growth. Channel 10 is on it's knees and they were always the counter push to 9 and 7 fighting over AFL. Cable and pay per view is fine to sustain viewers but it is hard to grow outside free to air exposure.

I heard with Fyfe it was more that he has refused to speak to Freo or any other club. I think we just got fed up with him playing everyone and not opening lines of communication with us. We have fingers in several pies and if one of those pies looks a bit lukewarm and keeps getting moved around you need to start looking at others.

Ameet is our best signing, managing the cap is so important to the clubs future.

I think the afl/nrl are going to be in for a nasty shock in the near future.

The TV and cable landscape is changing fast.

If I was a smart Jelly i'd stay at GWS for 2 more years.

Yeah nah. Gotta make hay while the sun shines.

Having multiple clubs in a bidding war over you, while you're in the best form of your life, on top of an unprecedented 20% cap increase.... that's a whole lot of sunshine.

Just ask chris dawes, dale thomas, travis cloke what it's like signing a contract at the right time?!

Remember when ross lyon described daisy as 'the best player in the game at moment', and everyone at the time agreed he wasn't too far wrong?

Not saying kelly has peaked, but 2 years in football is a long time- lots of clouds can suddenly appear.

We aren't going to get any big names unless we offer monster contracts, let's be honest. We aren't a big Melbourne club, but more importantly, we haven't shown that we have what it takes to go deep into September either, so it's not like when players were happy to go to Hawthorn even though they weren't throwing big offers at them.

We can keep chipping away and bring in guys like Steele or Bruce, who have been good for us, but those type of guys won't take us any further.

Armeet has been outstanding so far but he won't earn his pay packet until he has to manage a team playing finals with at least 6 guys who could earn huge dollars elsewhere. Right now I could manage our cap pretty well because we have Jack Steven the only guy really deserving of anything over $650,000. Carlisle probably the next most expensive as he was poached so getting overs. It would be hard for him to hit minimum cap not keep dollars down. It's like going to the shops with $1000 to spend and still having $50 left over when you already have everything you need. We would be pretty confident no-one wants any of our old boys so no pressure and Billings the only guy who looks like needing a pay rise and his form doesn't warrant ridiculous figures yet.

Yep the way sport goes into the future will be very interesting, it was pretty simple once, we are going to have to get some very good digital marketing people to help sell the sport somehow once the TV landscape dissolves. As much as people don't care about newspapers going, the constant talking about football 7 days a week makes us always front of mind in the south and western parts of the country. When you are finding Hutch and Caro painful they are actually still helping build the brand up ironically. One day all the chatter might stop and then we are in trouble as a sport.

Would it be smarter for saints to take their early draft picks for this year, and put all their eggs into Tom Lynch next year? With Riewoldt about to retire, it would seem like it would be amazing list management if the saints could pull that one off.

But obviously there's no guarantees in that sort of situation, so everything gets thrown at what looks appealing at the present time.

In the event Jelly selects Gws/North, then grabbing those early picks and throwing everything at Lynch would be a must.

Someone's getting nervous.

No. We need midfielders, which is why we are going after Kelly.

Understandable. Seems you lack quality midfielders outside of Steven, who can be relatively inconsistent. Gon be a shame if neither of us get Kelly. I ****ing despise the franchise
