Is it just me or is it the case whenever we are well placed with early draft picks the draft is not seen as a super draft year? Brett Anderson has suggested this years draft is not as good as last years and last year we were happy to trade away Pick 10. Looking at that draft Oliver Florent or Jy Simkpin would have been handy additions.

Obviously the recruiting team had a bigger target in mind this year which then was most likely Fyfe, and more recently has become Kelly. Willl it mean t
he lower the Hawks pick becomes the greater the likelihood the Saints will be to want to hang onto it ? Will make for an interesting trade period if Kelly does want to come to us. GWS will want Pick 2 or 3 plus another when all they paid for Kelly was Pick 2 in his draft year.

The top 3 picks of any draft are always the cream if it
does end up as Pick 2 or 3 I would be inclined to think including next years 2nd round would be more than enough.
For the last time, we couldn't have gotten Florent. Sydney had the pick before ours. Gold Coast had our pick 10. Sydney bid on Jack Bowes which moved GCs pick before Sydney's because they matched the bid. Sydney then took Florent. Our pick would have been next - and yes we could have had Simpkin.

I would never do that deal. That would be stupidity.... two top 10s including a top 2. We would need to be given crayons and put to bed by the AFL to save us from ourselves. It seems like since we got the Hawks pick cheap- (which was actually giving up last years first rounder) the forum is trying to find ways to waste them all as quickly as we can. Pick 2 with a future second is still better than they got for Treloar. people need to stop jerking off over Kelly and get some perspective.

Kelly is much better than treloar was when traded. If we get him the deal will suit us or armeet no good even though he got the hawk pick anyway. 2 firsts plus something coming back of value gets a real potential champion. No brainer if he wants us

Just wanted to make a few points...

1. IIRC the AFL bought a rule in a year or two back which requires a team to have a pick in the round which the bid for an academy or father son pick is made (this may only relate to first round? not sure). Thereby GWS requiring a first rounder or two to bid on and it makes them accountable for their picks rather than stockpiling 2nd and 3rd rounders. Thats what it was bought in.

Edit: it could have been related to the number of list spots being available and the number of picks in the draft.

2. No trade in the history of the game (IIRC) has resulted in a player being swapped for two high picks (i.e. a first and a second or two firsts). The only players that have come close (again IIRC) are possibly Aish (2 x 2nds) and Dangerfield, however the Danger trade had a lot of politics behind it (Geelong not wanting to pay him overs, doing a fair trade with Adelaide with regard to compo, etc.).

Even the Treloar trade got a second back, which I think makes sense as, in my mind, one player isnt worth two (at least not two first round quality players). If we do get Kelly for 2 x firsts we will be getting something back. Its just bad business if we dont.

3. I think we keep our Hawks pick and put a very large value on it. Try and get Kelly with our two firsts from 17 and 18. I think an end point if we do throw in the Hawks pick instead of our 2017 pick should be the Blues 2nd that I believe GWS have this year. At least that gives us a pick around 10ish and early 20ish to have a half decent presence or work something else out.

Fremantle did some ****ed up trades like getting Croad for their first three picks including pick one (Hodge).

He's better but you need to keep perspective, we are acting like a drunk with a gold card watching the home shopping network. Of course he is good but there is a point that a deal is beyond good management. Gary Ablett is awesome but he hasn't helped GCS.

Croad And McPharlin...

For

Hodge, Stone & Mitchell

It makes it better but gave up the pick that got them Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge for a very solid a grade CHB.

What do want to happen then this trade period? This years crop is very sub par from all reports & is looking like the weakest draft in the last 4-5 yrs...

Maybe we split the hawks pick for 2 picks or player and another high pick like Zac Jones and pick 7 for pick 3 then trade on pick 7 and 8 for Kelly and a 2nd coming back.
I know Ameet likes to split picks.

So let's only get triers because it hasn't worked for other clubs. We will pay what is fair to us. If it's 2 firsts then the club think that's fair. If the offer one it's because the club think it's fair

I'm pretty fond of Hayward they got too, almost looks like he might be better at times. Anyway, that was a pretty deep draft that has already netted some guns. I have draft envy.

all because they knew they were getting polak who they rated as the best kid in that draft....

polaks highlight? getting hit by a tram when he was on the piss and tried to outrun it

Poor old Richmond ended up with the medical bill. I still reckon that's just what they said to save face. Remember they traded away Mc Leod without ever seeing him play because Neesham thought he was a short arse.

Reckon Haywood will be a jet. Has speed & finds his own footy. Great get IMHO

If we **** up a pick 2 and a pick 7 at the draft and net nothing every Saints member should get to have a free kick at Trout's arse.

It might be the only way to get out of directly handing it to them as part of the deal. I would love to have another chance to pick in the top 5 pick before we lose access for a while (hopefully).

Simpkins gona be a jet. Bookmark it.

Yep, I have friends who follow North and know one of the assistants, they reckons Simpkin is going to be something super special.

Further to my catch up with Peter summers:

1. He didn't think we cud make finals this year considering we had the 3rd toughest draw according to champion data. Plus limited games played by paddy, membery and some of our young kids..
2. Reckon Joey might be dropped this week against Norf
3. Believes in our game plan and players with more games under them are executing it better...so said another 30-40 games for this team..and with hopeful additions shud make this a better team
4. Says Lenny is now settled with his family in Sydney so hard to see him back anytime soon.
5. Spoke about how we were blind sided by Ross lyin..

I trust Ameet will no way just hand over that pick. Its not even worth it with a 2nd coming back. They will most likely try and do something with that pick before handing it over to Giants if Kelly nominates.

Remember Melbourne traded the pick that netted Kelly to GWS for Dom Tyson and a swap of later picks? Tyson was a gun mid at the Giants at the time and it looked super smart recruiting as they got a ready made A grade mid? Never worked out so good for them. He's not in their best 5 mids these days. They have netted guys like Oliver when they actually went to the draft and nearly all their improvement has come from the early picks used well. I want Kelly but not if it hurts our future.
Yeah I understand your point but I don't think Tyson was ever at the level Kelly is at IMO and that is AA. Either way there are no guarantees of success in picking and trading. As has been said before you can give examples to support most arguments one way or another. One thing is for sure if you get Kelly you have someone in the best handfull of players in the league.

Tyson was a strong and aggressive ball winner but he had or has nowhere near the skill, talent and game changing ability that Kelly has. Have no idea whether we'll get him or not but we'd be abslute fools if we didn't put as much as we can into getting him.
