stop complaining about spending the money that we have saved on something that it was purposefully saved and designed to be spent on.

we don't need anymore b graders, money ball picks or potential future stars because we already have more than enough. we need guaranteed A grade talent and this is how we've planned on obtaining it.

getting kelly for our 2017 and 2018 firsts give or take some change is a great get. leaves us with plenty to go on our way and continue our rebuild.

The longer it goes the more chance we are of losing Billings dont like that its round 12 coming up and he not signed up

We've met with JB's management over the break. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Jack Billings will re-sign. He'll sign a probable 3 year extension shortly.

Interesting afternoon of posts I'm still not convinced that we can bring in enough talent to finish top four next year.

I'm just as doubtful that we can bring in enough to win by 2020.

One thing I'm 100% sure of is I would trade for josh Kelly, here's why.

Firstly he is a star if he never improves from here he will still be a great player for another 8 years barring injury.

Secondly he more than any other available player suits our needs exactly.

Thirdly in any given draft with two first round picks I would gladly take a strike rate of one superstar and a Good ordinary player every time. Therefore two picks for Kelly is a gauranteed win, we can pick up another good ordinary player anywhere.

Lastly I'm not worried about his salary we have the cap space, players tend to stay out of other players business but if anyone on the list feels aggrieved when they play like kelly we'll pay them like Kelly.

I didnt label, I asked.

We have been told constantly that the club has forward loaded contracts to get even min 95%, the CEO comrs out and says we have 1.6 mill to spend rxtra in the cap, but suddenly we arent going to be able to sign our current players.

Where does this stuff come from? Honestly.
In thr face of all available evidence, tnis is the reason for not getting Kelly, even tnough this is exactly the strategy set out to members by Pelchan 4 years ago.

Opinions are welcome. Opinions based in fact are even more valued.

So you think Finnis comes out publicly and announces to the football world we have 1.6 million to spend , and you believe this ?
Worked well for North so far .
The true figure , wont be made public .

This!

However you could just have easily used Kelly himself or bontempelli as examples that would make things a bit interesting, proven gun versus young talent.

.

You are failing to understand TWO points.

1/ Kelly is a known. Draft picks are unknown

2/ Even if we managed to get a new Bont, and the odds against that are very high and moreso if our picks are 6+, a Kelly in his prime would most likely deliver a lot more than a promising young kid when the goal is a flag by 2020.

No I understand your point perfectly and I don't disagree with you on the above points.

I just find it interesting that you chose two players both ours who have been seen as under performers. Yours is undoubtedly the safer path. I'm just pointing out it is possible to hit two home runs, not likely just possible.

I have just stated my position on Kelly if you read back a few posts you will see why I would trade for him.

I just like to hear all sides of the debate that's all.

No he hasn't re-signed however more confirming what I had heard around the streets of Seaford and I'm sure it's not that far away.
That's good to hear and hope it happens real soon, he is to important to lose

finnis did not say we have 1.6 spare in cap space
he simply answered "yes" when asked if we can afford 2x 800k contracts.
stop reading so much into it. all it means is we now know that is the very minimum we have and it is more than likely going to be a chunk more
So we will be able to resign our current players.

The issue some are pushing is that by bringing in a Kelly or a Martin is that it will squeeze out a Billing or a McCartin.

Basically suggesting the strategy hasnt been thought though.

This has been planned for more than four years but apparently some think it is some kind of knee jerk ploy thought up in thw past 3 months.

There is no reason our side could not win a flag - it all depends on all the guys playing good together on the same day - we beat GWS , even though they had alot of injuries .
Just look at our team - our backline is solid - no problems there.
Midfield - Ross - Steele - Steven - S

double that

Would love an either Kelly, Lever/May combo or a Martin, Lever/May combo.
I know everyone is expecting Goddard to be up and about, but what was said about him at Sandi, is he is just a slow lumbering player. Not sure how many games he has played since returning from injury, but slow & lumbering we don't need.

I think the Dogs showed everyone its achievable with a month of great footy and the bye . Anything is possible :)

and a guy who displays little leadership, average skills and has never been able to carry his own rabble of a team.
Yeah nah that's just wrong. He's a decent leader, has better disposal efficiency than the likes of Dangerfield, Martin and Steven. Gets more of the ball than all of them, averages 10 clearances a game with more contested possessions and kicks to boot. Rocky is the only reason Brisbane have been even slightly competitive this year and last when he wasn't injured or carrying something.

...if Rockliff wants to come we should get him. Might cost round 700k-800k. He's as good as Fyfe at the moment. He is the free agent for us. I don't think there's any way Dusty would come to the Saints so I wont bother with him. Rockliff is the one.

Probably goes to Hawks or something like that but I would throw some dosh his way and see if it sticks.

I would straight up give both of this years and next years 1st rounders for Kelly and Whitfield with maybe a second coming back if we could squeeze it but i wouldn't be upset if it didn't anyway. Whitfield has shown a heap and if not for his suspension for the first half of this year i think this would have been his break out season. Bringing them both in would be absolutely huge for us.

Absolutely. If we could land Kelly for our two first round draft picks and then Rockliff as a FA we suddenly have one of the best midfields in the comp. Rocky is the #1 clearance player in the competition and Kelly is shaping up to be the most complete midfielder. Having two players of that quality added to the midfield would do wonders for Steven as teams could not afford to let Kelly, Rockliff and Ross run unchecked while shutting down Steven.

If we head into 2018 with a team like this we could go a long way into September:

B: Webster, Brown, Geary
HB: Newnes, Carlisle, Roberton
C: Riewoldt, Ross, Kelly
HF: Acres, Bruce, Billings
F: Gresham, McCartin, Membrey

Foll: Hickey, Steven, Rockliff
Int: Gilbert, Weller, Stevens, Sinclair
