It's unlikely, but if we did then England and Joe Root has just thrown the ashes in the bin and will be criticised the rest of their lives for it. Not going to take that risk.

What you’re missing here is that there is no discretion here. In case you feel the urge to back pedal - discretion is something you use when you be cautious. If the doc says he has a concussion then he can’t play any further part in the game. If the doc doesn’t say he has a concussion you can’t sub him.

Ergo it is wrong to suggest that they might just be being cautious. The fact is that he has a concussion. It is exceptionally rare to fully recover from a concussion within 3 days.

No chance this will be anything other than a draw. Absolute best case scenerio for England is if they come out for the next 15-17 overs before drinks and go at 5 an over and get the lead to 250. That leaves 48-50ish overs, pending light etc to get 10 wickets. Even at this attacking mindset after lunch its very unlikely England will run through a team in less than 50 overs.

Honestly yeah. Without Smith I think this side can get routed, although you'd hope Khawaja, Head and Wade would stick around long enough for the draw.

Given that Langer's sides tend to erode over hours rather than collapse over minutes, and that this wicket isn't really playing like a Day 5 wicket (unless you bowl in the footmarks), it is possible, but not likely.

No, no they wont. They are 165 ahead now, 5 an over for 15-17 overs leaves them with 75-85 runs, which gives them 240-250.

Types of concussions

Concussions are sometimes graded on the severity of their symptoms:

• grade 0: headache and difficulty concentrating
• grade 1: headache, difficulty concentrating, and a dazed feeling for less than a minute
• grade 2: grade 1 symptoms, with a longer period of feeling dazed, possibly accompanied by dizziness, confusion, amnesia, ringing in the ears, and irritability
• grade 3: loss of consciousness for less than a minute
• grade 4: loss of consciousness for longer than a minute

Returning to very limited activities following a grade 0 or 1 concussion may be allowable within a day or two. A grade 2 headache may require a few days of rest. A grade 3 or 4 concussion will mean at least a few weeks of recovery time.

I'm not his doctor but I think based on the info we have so far, Smith's concussion is either grade 2 or 1. I think we'll see him in the 3rd Test.

If Smith is out of the third we're in big trouble. That said from a pure cricket stand point losing the Third Test wouldn't be so bad, there hasn't really been a genuine close Ashes for a long time and heading into the fourth Test 1-1 would be great for that.

If Marnus was to play and hit runs it would also make a potential top order reshuffle interesting if Bancroft continues to struggle. Can't drop Head or Wade so maybe they'd look at Khawaja opening and Marnus to 3.

Id say Smith will have a decent headache for the next 3-4 days but will pull through all tests etc for the 3rd test. He wasnt knocked out so fingers crossed it wont be too serious. Id be suprised if he doesnt play the 3rd test.

We aren't scoring at 4-5 an over. It's an easy enough pitch to survive but scoring quick is impossible. Take the draw, move on.
