Why do not just extend the contracts for all required players and front load them with this years spare salary cap. Draft guys like Kemp and avoid trying to get Daniher etc. Accept next season is about getting game into players again and at next years FA we can target Grundy/Daniher with little or no draft cost and plenty of cap space available for long term contracts.

One way or another Grundy will be locked away by then.

The amount of people losing their s**t on here about how bad our trade period has been before anything has even happened is staggering.
Most posters see this thread for what it is - kicking sh*t around and discussing a bunch of wild and maybe not so wild hypotheticals. Sometimes some posters get a tad too emotionally invested in some of those hypotheticals though :p

That deal reported would be... unfathomable.

Much easier to fathom is the idea that Barrett just simply doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He’s the type of bloke who reports based on heresay, then calls it a ‘bombshell’ when the opposite outcome happens.
Plus he's been blacklisted at Essendon, he wouldn't know shit from our end.

cutting through the hysteria that seems to have gripped this thread, I'd be pretty happy with an off-season of:

IN:
Daniher (2020 first + sweetener?)
Bennell (free)
Cutler (pick 42 + sweetener?)
Draft Kemp @ pick 5

RETAINED:
Papley
Jones

Why not add in a date with Kate Upton while you’re at it.

Dalrymple is talking to Green...no way pick 5 is involved in this. ... is there....If so.. the board should step in and relieve some of our list managers from their post

Carlton want papley AND something SIGNIFICANT for pick 9. GTFO! YOUR the ones chasing OUR CONTRACTED player. You don't dictate terms here WE DO.
Papley must be staying... What would Melbourne offer for Papley

Holy s**tballs

I just watched Brodie Kemp highlights.

See for yourself

Draft Prospect Brodie Kemp

A dead set gun. Tall, fast, skillful, athletic, smart.

Are we going to let this bloke go and go and get Daniher?

FFS.

I feel ill thinking about it.

Imagine Kemp, Dawson and Blakey running around together in a few years. Wed be unstoppable.
If Kemp can ever run again maybe....which we have no way of knowing given his surgery was so recent and he won't be able to play at all next year in any reasonably conservative injury management scenario. (Which you'd want your head read if going anything but conservative on a young kid with a severe injury and high draft pick).
Pass - even more so if there are guys just as good available with no injury.

Good ******* question
Because Buddy will be a year older.

The appeal of Daniher lies largely with the idea of pairing him with Buddy in the forward line. Yes, at 25 we can see him as a successor of sorts, but if we're pursuing him hard this year, it's because the club hasn't given up on another run at a flag before Bud retires.

That's not to say we'll win it next year, but if they spend 2020 working out how to play with each other, Blakey/Dawson/Rowbottom continue to develop, and we somehow find the right combo of players/structure through the middle, who's to say we can't be right up the pointy end in 2021/22?

Leaving Daniher to next year opens us up to the possibility he changes his mind or gets recruited elsewhere, and Buddy plays out his last few years rebuilding with some nice draft picks who might come good long after he's gone.

I'm torn as to whether it's the best strategy, but I reckon that's the motivation here.

I don't get why 75% of the forum was willing to trust Barrett. He's not really a trustworthy journalist and loves to spew s**t for clicks.

Because that deal made little sense. Hogan went for 6 + 23 and he was two years younger and had actually played in his trade year....
Nobody trusts Barrett - people are reacting to the proposed deal he put forth. There is a difference. I'd rather the club knew the fan base's feelings than not.

The club would do their due diligence in looking at draftees and then still decide they’d rather use the pick on Daniher.

I hope with everything that we don’t take this route.

Eh? How would we get him with the number 5 pick if we gave that pick to GWS (If that is what you are suggesting)?
I'd pay a premium for sure, but that one sounds a little metaphysical.
He'd totally be worth a selection at that point in the draft though from all accounts...

Would be pretty shocked if GWS don't match for Green. Maybe we're trying to setup a trade with them?
