Why are we playing Martin as a forward? Someone else posted that Teague or another coach mentioned this too. From everything else I've read and heard he's a wingman? Or high half forward delivering into the forward line.

I agree, I think Martin could play a role off the HBF, eventually settling on a wing

How many wings do we need?

And I don't mean chicken.

Always Crane & Quirk.

McConnon & Pickett......had potential.

Mick Young & Peter Francis, both got a medal, and got sacked within a year.

Scholl, Athorn......come on.

Any of Cuners, Setters & LOB in this years model....

LOB and Newnes for me. Huge engines with penetrating kicks to break lines and cover defensively.

Setterfield to the midfield and Cuningham forward.

Huge wrap on Setters, can play.

Cuners is the biggest tease on the list, just gotta get him on the park.

The small forward role is an opportunistic one which means you need opportunities and lots of them to do well. That means plenty of quality inside 50 entries. Perhaps Martin can play the role but because he has been playing in a weak side he has been needed up around the footy.

It will be interesting to see how he goes. I hope his fitness is up to scratch.

Either way I would be happy for us to rotate our wings and half back off the bench to keep them fresh and running which opens the door to having 6 or 7 wingmen and half back types in the side.

Would also like to see our half forwards covering ground and running hard to there's room there for at least 3 guys rotating through that position. There's room for 10 hard running outside players in our side should we chose to play that way.

Plowman Jones Simpson
Docherty
Weitering Williamson
Walsh
Cripps Newnes
Martin
Curnow Cuningham
Betts McKay McGovern
Kreuzer Murphy Curnow

Newman O'Brien Setterfield Gibbons/Silvagni

If you were going to select a hard running side you might go for something like this. Newman, Simpson, Docherty, Williamson rotate. Walsh, Newnes and O'Brien rotate. Martin, Cuningham and Gibbons rotate. Setterfield, Murphy, Cripps and Curnow rotate. Sometimes the groups get mixed up, Cuningham goes on the ball, Setterfield to the outside, Wings and half backs can switch. Martin can go back or midfield. We have a lot of options here, there is going to be a lot for the match committee to discuss before and during the game. Then there are a heap who might come into that side and do a better job.

No wrong answers here when it comes to who plays where at this stage, I think that one needs to work itself out.

I think Newnes will play senior footy. If we had him last year he would have been our second best wingman with Walsh ahead of him and Setterfield and O'Brien behind him. Not saying things won't change but he's one who needs to be caught up to. In saying that there is room for 3 wingers in the side with rotations.

Newnes will play a lot of senior footy in 2020.

We have a heap of young talent on the list, and we've pumped games into many of them, often before they have been ready for it.

It is great we are now surrounding the kids with mature bodies. No longer are they guaranteed a game, and talent alone will not get them there.

Devil's advocate here (because I agree his best position is off the back corner of the centre square) - if we plan on having the ball spend the majority of the time forward of centre, the half forward flank becomes the wing. Think that'll be Teague's approach. Get the ball forward by any means, then keep it there until we goal. Makes sense, then, to have Martin stationed in the most damaging position possible - a kick and a half from goal where he can help lock the ball in, and hit targets inside 50. When the ball heads down the other end, the HFF players tend to press up to the wing anyway.

Could also just be that, with Jack joining proceedings very late, Teague wants to put him in a more instinctive position while he integrates with the group. Can always increase his midfield time as he settles into the squad and the gameplan develops.

I’d never bothered to watch him play, until the recent trade talks. Those long arms of his are weapons in marking contests; as is his delivery by foot. I can see him playing as an attacking wingman drifting forward.
