I have gone on record saying I'd prefer a key defender with our first this year. However I would appreciate the irony if we got Sonsie.

Given that this time last year I was saying how we needed a midfielder and that whoever got Sonsie would be getting an absolute gun, and a year later we get Sonsie the midfielder and I'm complaining about it :p
Who would you want though? VR seems to be the only one around that level, and I prefer the sound of Bazzo* as he's a one position player.

*I haven't watched any games and most of my opinions are formed from Dubai Quacker

I'm happy with a mid if that's what the club thinks we should go with. I just would really like us to get a key defender, but I understand there's not an abundance of them going around in the draft pool.

Brander going back to the Giants who originally had his draft rights through the academy zones, but they were revoked before the draft.

If he was coming back to Sydney we should have had an offer ready.

we probably don't rate him. I think Paddy in the rookie draft is a monty now

Rates himself as a forward not defender.

We have depth in the position already.

I agree he is a forward, and I would want to pair him up with McDonald long term but all well.

Or even as McDonald go-home insurance :grimacing:

Amartey, McLean, McDonald, Heeney and potentially McCartin.

That's enough forward depth for now and the future. We need to focus on defence and the midfield with our list spots.

I would want Brander ahead of Amartey and McLean, but I realise I'm pretty alone on rating this bloke.

One of them, likely McLean, will probably be traded next offseason anyway with Ladhams arriving.

Brander is delisted, McLean is in demand. Not sure why you would rate him more highly. Doubt we would trade McLean at the end of 2022 as the 2023 tall forwards looks like:
Bud retired
Reid retired
Hickey retired or stepping back
Ruck Ladhams
FF McLean
CHF McDonald
Forward/Ruck Amartey

He wasn't delisted because he wasn't good, it was oppurtunity and position surplus.

I think Brander is really talented and is going to achieve that talent soon. McLean is a good tryer who I like but I take Brander every time until I see enough from either to change my mind.

Anyway this is all irrelevant as he has already signed elsewhere, I have just wanted him since his draft year. I think we draft him instead of Ling if WCE didn't swoop in.

I agree.

Albeit, your use of “swoop” did detract from an otherwise fine post.

He is a LOB. Will not take his turn to put his head over the ball.

If that were to happen, it would be a pretty epic mistake by the club, considering we aren't far away at all from a Buddy-less forward line. I know he's still a gun, but he is 35... McLean and Amartey's importance will only increase over time.

Why? Bloke is pedestrian at best with no real position. His best games in the WAFL from all reports were in defence and he doesn't want to play there really, sees himself as a wingman.

He aint a forward in fact he won't play a minute there for GWS. Probably play the old Tomlinson role for them, whether he's good enough is highly questionable.

This list doesn't inspire me with great confidence, so if we picked up Van Rooyen AND a later KPD, I'd be pretty happy.

Ladhams may become an A grade ruck, but it's not just been opportunity that's held him back. Hayes was rated as the better ruck at Port, just doesn't have the forward ability yet. King and McAndrew are prospects so obviously not advocating for another ruck draftee.

McDonald I can't see faltering, but jury's still out on McLean and Amartey for me. If one becomes a good, best 22 player consistently I think we'll have done well. Definitely not as great of a need (yet) as KPD.

Ladhams really wanting to come to us I see as a real positive. He's a top line ruckman and at the price we got was a free hit, a shift down in the first when there is stuff all between 10 and 25, meh.

Two KPD is overkill for me especially in a draft that is thin for them. Get one whether that be Van Rooyan or one in the second round, but that's it there's more next year.
