Targeting players like Taylor and Gray made sense but it hasn't worked out. We didn't sign them thinking they would be stop gaps but rather that they would actually contribute. Then bank the cash and try again no point settling on average options. Makes it harder to attract someone when it’s needed.

I disagree thoroughly... with one minor aspect of your post. Maybe injuries last year have impacted Hewett and he'll improve/won't improve, but I wouldn't put him in the 'slower' category, reckon he's got a better burst than Mills, and that reference also conjures up comparisons with JPK, Parker. Some of his 2019 highlights for example were fairly explosive.IMO our midfield should for the next 5+ years should be: Hewett, Mills, Rowbottom, Warner.
Hewett (*) & Mills as the slower bigger bodies winning the hard ball at the coal face.
Rowbottom & Warner as the more explosive extractors to clear it from the contest.
Florent, Gulden and (hopefully) Stephens as the rotating guys who can play inside and outside, distributing it with their speed and class.
If we got someone like a Lipinski, he would further bolster that latter group of classy distributors.
That is a midfield group with the potential to be incredibly damaging IMO, and this is coming from a guy who was very vocal about his doubts regarding our future midfield stocks. Mills' form in the midfield, Warner's emergence, Florent's improved foot skills(**) and Gulden's class at senior level already have me more optimistic than I was six months ago, and I am still of the belief that Rowbottom can be the best of the lot, despite his tough year. Every single name there is 25 or under, which means that's a group that could grow and thrive together for a number of years, and compliment each other's strengths quite well.
And I haven't forgotten about JPK & Parker. I just think JPK only has a year left if his contract extension (and recent form) is anything to go by, and Parker should, and I really think will be, moved into that HF role that Jude occupied once he hit his later years.
* We need to actually re-sign Hewett and settle on his role though, which means showing some faith in him and giving him game-time alongside Mills.
** Florent needs to maintain those foot skills and lessen the disparity between his best and worst. When he's on, he is great, foot skills included.
There, did your job for you Horse & Beatson.
And Brodie & Constable are, what, dual Brownlow Medalists?

Both have higher ceilings. I’m not talking about selling the farm here. We will need someone to replace Kennedy and Parker is no spring chicken too. Are they the right ones don’t know but we do need an inside or two going forward
Spewing parish signed
Would have the money anyway with what overs we pay
And he’s been a naughty boy againElijah had very well documented behavioural issues pre-draft. We took a punt on him and it backfired.
Ling was always a reach.
Overall, our draft record looks ok because of the success of our 2nd & 3rd rounders.
I just wonder what things would be like if we’d nailed the first round.
And I will post-script by saying I still believe Blakey will come good & Stephens will become a quality player (but I am starting to think it’ll be for another club).
I thought even Buddy's contract was guess work? All we know is the total $ over how many years but the rest is still guess work
I agree with most except Gulden will be the best. Gulden will be a great of our mighty club.IMO our midfield should for the next 5+ years should be: Hewett, Mills, Rowbottom, Warner.

Hard to fathom how you can leave Campbell out of the mix for our “next 5 years midfield”.I agree with most except Gulden will be the best. Gulden will be a great of our mighty club.
I agree. Campbell will also be a great of our club. Wasted down back but that is part of his Horse education. No problem with that. The latent value of our midfield is huge.Hard to fathom how you can leave Campbell out of the mix for our “next 5 years midfield”.
The Hawks saw him as Pick 4 material & he’s going to be a gun mid.
Reckon that's what we thought we were getting when we drafted Warner. The power burst and decent foot skills have been a massive bonus. If that was the one thing you disagreed with me on then I'm gonna assume you meant you agreed thoroughly
Ah look I love Hewett but I don't think he's got any burst. Which is fine btw. I think speed is something that is somewhat over-rated when it comes to inside mids. As I've noted many times, none of the Bulldogs inside mids are very quick, but they are clean and efficient by hand so they get it to the outside very quickly. Gives them time and space to work with. That's all an inside mid needs to be able to do, and I reckon Hewett can do it better than most. Love watching him just assessing options in traffic.

And Bell…I've had the 'best player' conversation with a number of folks and the best part is that so many different names have come up: Heeney, Mills, Dawson, Rowbottom, McInerney, Warner, Gulden... even some haven't given up on Blakey being that player.
You know you're putting together a damn good team when there can be so many different candidates for who your best player will be over the next decade.
The dream scenario: they all end up as good as each other and take turns winning Norm Smith Medals in our eight-peat.
