Was a pretty good draft/trade season.
We used the following year's 2nd round pick to bring in a ready to go young mid - Jack Steele.

The Hawks trade was for our first and 4th, we got the Coffield pick plus a second and third.
The best we probably could have hoped for would have been Florent or Venables.
Instead we ended up with all of Coffield , Long , and Battle.

I still think Long was an odd choice, but that reflects our recruiters rather than the deal done with the Hawks, which was very favourable to us.
God knows why we didn't choose Bolton.

Really? I would think it would be pretty obvious. It relates to the "no d***heads" policy.

Or Parfitt, who went immediately after Long.

What's the average AFL salary?

It's based on average for that year right?

So if I have a 5 year deal on 200k a year then it's the same as a 1 year deal on 200k?

Or do they look at total?

I'm worried it will be a tiny base salary with massive bonus payments for getting games etc.
The bonus payments aren't counted for compensation.

Was a bizarre one. That was the next big shock after the mccartin one.

Essendon is probably the closest model to that in recent times and they have stepped back to the draft. Sides with one elite player rarely win premierships so we'd have to get a few tipping into that from the current group and new recruits to really step up to get to Melbourne level.
And how would the Bombers look now if Daniher, Saad & Fantasia had chosen to stay with them?

A lot easier to step back and hit the draft when players with currency decide, en masse, they're leaving, than to turf players with currency out the door in the hope of bringing in better talent.

Read this and thank **** we ain't Carlton. Check the numbers thrown around here:
When Carlton landed both Adam Saad and Zac Williams in last year’s off-season, the view of quite a number of rival clubs was that they had invested too heavily in running defenders.

The Blues had paid more than $1.4 million for that pair, their purchase predicated somewhat on their hope that Williams, to whom the Giants had offered $700,000 a season over five years, would bolster their area of greatest weakness - the midfield.

But the classy Cerra will come at a more than respectable cost in terms of contract - far less than the $700,000-plus that the Dockers had offered.

What in the hell were GWS and Freo thinking!!!

Dunstan got healthy Brownlow votes due to a handful of very good games, yet we had quite a few players who didn't get votes, and it shows me we had too many under-performers this season..too much inconsistency which is why we lost games that we were pencilled in to win, and in the end cost us a finals berth. We do need top get more class in the midfield for a start.

Bailey Smith, liberatore, Adam treloar, viney and braysaw all had less votes than Dunstan.....does that mean they had a horrible year as well???

Brownlow votes mean nothing

At the same time, not many complete spuds poll brownlow votes in half the games they play.

Luke played some excellent footy this year I don't think that can be disputed, and while he may not fit into our best 22 I wish him well… no need for anyone to trash his rep on the way out, it's actually pathetic.

Funnily enough he’s gone from depth at St Kilda, to depth at Melbourne. Seems Spook overvalued himself. Anyway, good luck to him
he might get into a grand final again. but also he might be playing vfl unless he pulls his finger out next year and play like he did for sandringham for a number of weeks.

I i will be happy if we get compensation for his move.

I remember this too now that you mention it. From memory that poster was actually a practicing professional in that field themselves and was adamant that JOM would never play.
I think it was a Hawks poster and not a Saints one though. Probably chased away from the forum due to shame lol.
I think it was Rors himself.

Fingers crossed a couple of clubs (e.g. Ess or Freo as mentioned) were remotely interested in Dunstan, so that Melb gave enough of a base contract to trigger a compo pick.

Now Dunstan is over, quite a few clubs have shown interest in both Long and Battle, clubs I have heard are Essendon, Dogs and Richmond, but for whom or for what is unknown.
I think we aren't getting offered what we require to move them though. I feel Battle may stay (wouldn't mind) and Long goes (wouldn't mind). But tht is opinion only.
