Players invited to attend draft night.

Draft NIGHT INVITES

A dozen players considered to be first-round “locks” have been invited to the opening night of the AFL National Draft later this month.

Brisbane father-son prospect Will Ashcroft is among a group of invitees which also includes No. 1 pick fancy Aaron Cadman and expected North Melbourne-bound pair George Wardlaw and Harry Sheezel.

Other players to receive invites are Elijah Tsatas, Bailey Humphrey, Reuben Ginbey, Mattaes Phillipou, Cameron Mackenzie, Ollie Hollands, Jhye Clark and Jedd Busslinger.

Geelong have also committed to take F/S Osca Riccardi a lightly built running back/winger type and their Cats NGA Academy player hard at it inside mid Ted Clohessy in the rookie draft. Clohessy might be some chance of being taken in the main draft perhaps but Geelong don't seem to think so.

Possibly , but I don’t think clubs are that petty.

Most mocks have MM going after 20, so will be interested to see where he actually goes .
If GWS select him at 18 or 19 maybe you can claim payback.
I think if taking Michalanney will force us to lose any first round points next year, then we'll not match.

With our current picks, I think the magic number is pick 16.

If a bid comes before that, I reckon we’d be looking at swapping out future picks (3rd rounder?) on the night.

Pick 46/56/59 are wasteland players.

We have enough already to match a pick 16 bid - if we trade for mid-r3 pick, we could match something like a pick 9/10 bid.

There are only two trades I see us doing.

1) Future first for pick 15 (GWS) if Phillipou is still there.

2) Future second for pick 18 or 19 (GWS) if _____ is there. No idea who _____ would be though.

Really hoping Phillipou has been crying about leaving mum.

Phillipou is one of the 12 already invited to attend the draft on the night.....clubs give the AFL a list of players they have in contention for the 1st round...safe to say it would look unlikely Phillipou gets through to #15?

We’re not giving our future first for Bo Freaking Callaghan! FFS

I'm saying these are the most likely trades (if any).

All of these options are MUCH more likely;

  • Phillipou is drafted before 15
  • GWS want to use pick 15
  • GWS want to use pick 18
  • GWS want to use pick 19
  • There are no kids we want to use our future picks for
  • And potentially we don't even rate Phillipou

Chris Dorre espn not rating Michalanney in his top 100 a bit of a surprise

31. Adelaide (matching Carlton's bid) - Max Michalanney (Adelaide F/S) - Norwood (SA)
The son of Jim, Max Michanney is eligible to join Adelaide as a father-son selection due to his father playing more than 200 games for SANFL club Norwood. An athletic defender, Michalanney plays a negating style and is effective shutting down forwards of various heights and types.

Why the * would we do that deal?
We wouldn't but we might be tempted if Mattaes is still there at #10.

Personally I doubt he's still there after #10.

He'll go by pick ten I reckon, Port a chance to get him home to Mum in a couple of years if he lands at a crap club

I honestly think that if we had a genuine interest in Phillipou that we would have traded our 2023 first rounder for Rankine.

To me I just don't see us moving heaven and earth to get him, there might be the possibility that if he's still around in the late teens and we might consider trading our two 2023 2nd round picks for him, but even though I don't know if we would.

If the quality of the 2023 draft class is what they're predicting then I just can't see us letting go of a potential top 5 pick next year.

Even if we love him, we're getting terrible value for our future pick

How are we getting terrible value for our future first pick?

We'd be getting pick 10 for a future top 10 pick which I actually project to be about pick 10 in 2023.

But regardless of those future unknown players, in the future draft that's always better.... we'd be getting a bottom age tall SA midfielder who looks pretty damn good, and could be exactly what we need. We'd potentially be getting a top 5 player in this draft that has fallen due to interstate clubs not wanting to draft him.
