I had to watch quite a few replays this year (knowing who'd won) and even I think he was poor in most games. A significant backwards step from where he looked to be tracking in 2021.

He's not a small forward (scored 2 goals twice this year) and his (effective) pressure comes and goes.

To be that small you either need to be quick or classy and he's neither.
No doubt McHenry needs to find another level .....his kicking is pretty reliable ....IMO he needs to become another Ed Langdon

Playing as a small fwd, does not capitalise on his strengths .....running

I prefer Rowe also over McHenry and Murphy. But at this stage 17 other list managers haven’t jumped on him - still may after the draft.

Either way though suggests cutting him isn’t a poor decision

That's the state of play of our list right now.

We're not even cutting the worst of our 22 and every other team won't touch them even for a depth spot.

Wasn't it Langdon who Darren Burgess said the best athlete he coached in the AFL?
An unbelievable runner who runs from DEF point post to FWD point post all day

What are you basing this off?

Not sure our opponents share a similar concern?

'Watch out for McHenry he's an elite runner' - no one ever
OVERVIEW

Edward "Ned" McHenry is a player who has not let size get in the way of his AFL dream. There are not too many mid-170cm players who are talked about as first-round prospects, but that is how impressive McHenry has been over the journey. While his size might put some clubs off, like any smaller player coming into AFL draft consideration, McHenry has plenty of impressive traits that catch the eye, and he is certainly going to be a handy pick-up for whichever club decides to draft him. He is smart with the ball in hand, can evade opponents and run all day long with an elite tank, while he can play inside or outside - though he does not mark as much as other midfielders - and he is a profound tackler who loves the defensive side of football as much as the offensive side of football. He will likely fulfil that small forward role at AFL level, providing plenty of defensive pressure, or he could pinch hit on the outside being the player to use the ball going inside 50, however he does have limited speed. Either way, we expect he lands somewhere in the second round.
His running was always his strength .....he hasn't been used in a role that capitalises on that strength

His massive endurance base - a draft-crop leading 22.2 on the yo-yo test and an impressive 6:11 on the 2km time trial at the National Draft Combine, means he is in the elite echelon of gut-runners and this is the main thing that sets him aside from a lot of the other draftees.

Why not play McHenry as defender then? he can tackle as much as he likes and then use his aerobic capacity to break from the half back line AND hit players with his kicking.

Straight line stuff, which suits someone like him.

In fact, id rather swap McHenry and Jones.

even better - make him the team runner..he has the energy to get the drinks out fast to the players all day

It's bad value because a possible top five pick next year should MINIMUM get us a top five pick this year.

And if we in any way rated him, we could have traded the future 1st and kept our pick and drafted him.
Unless GC didn’t want the future 1st

Given that they have a possible top 5 academy kid next year and were giving Geelong pick 7 you’d think they preferred this years pick 5

Pedlar was probably a bit of a risk ... would have likely gone much higher if he didn't seem to be prone to injuries.
TBH I reckon he could have gone much lower too

The fact that he didn’t play nationals games and had injuries made him a difficult one to judge

If he had more exposed form he might have been rated lower

Definitely took a risk with him on potential and projection

Time will tell if it’s successful , he has some exciting traits but also some problems with his body , fitness , consistency

Nah, if not for his injury history especially in his draft year he'd have gone higher, not too many mid/forwards with his explosiveness when fit or his ability to take a hanger at his size.

Can see that point of view

But also we will never know how he would have gone in nationals etc

Possibly not as well as a pick 11 , I think in some ways he went higher by having less exposed form due to the weapons you mentioned

Pick 11 isn't exactly the who's who of the AFL. Some solid players in there, but other than Greene and Lynch (maybe SS), no A-graders there.

Why wouldn't they want a top five pick next year?

Assuming they are willing to trade down for points, they'd get fantastic offers for it.

I would have thought have thought the fact they just threw away pick 7 for pennies on the dollar shows how little they valued this year's draft?

So what did he say and which co-hosts? Because Bicks agreed with him that he’s been critical for a long time

He has been critical - but not petulant in the past. “He’s a dud” etc is far past where he has previously gone. Also his statement about the treatment of James “but I am not going to use my platform” comments

James delisting - and the manner in which it was done - has sent him over the edge. No longer moderately objective - just bitter

Should I bother watching night 1 of the draft, or are these night 2 moves?
You should watch night 1 if Phillipou slips outside the first 10 picked and every pick after if he's still there, if he's gone there is one other player of interest.
