Weddle is a pretty fascinating type. If he was listed at 195cm rather than 192 I think there’d be genuine Top 10-12 hype. 192 is just that tweener size these days that is difficult to get excited about if you’re dealing with a defender. Might grow a couple of cm, might not. I definitely agree that he plays taller than his height though, so it’s an interesting call. I wouldn’t be against us calling his name out - he just plays in a way that makes you want him on your team IMO.

Equally fascinating that Twomey has Phillipou dropping to Pick 10. I can certainly see his rationale, but who knows, I don’t think anyone is confident about where he’ll go, other than that it won’t be to Gold Coast or West Coast. The Geelong pick just reeks of Jhye Clark too.

Assuming we don’t end up swooping in for Phillipou (let’s be honest, it’s not likely), we seem to have our sights set on GWS’ pick 19 (which ends up as 21) to maybe get in before a MM bid to grab one of Barnett, J Ryan or Weddle. I suppose maybe Hamish and co figure that at least one of those 3 (and possibly 2 of them) will definitely be available there.

Even if we don’t get in before a MM bid, we could just trade a 2023 3rd for a 2022 3rd to gain enough total points to match the MM bid, then still orchestrate a trade for the GWS pick (with North’s 2023 2nd the focal point).

Looks reasonably likely to me based on everything we’re seeing that one of Weddle, Barnett or J Ryan ends up a crow. I’d personally prefer either of the non-rucks.

If we can’t pull off a trade to land one of those guys, I’m sure there’s a bunch of others who we have in our sights, not just late ones like Gallagher and Dowling. Happens every year.
Agree

I think a reason I'm interested in selling next year's first back into this year to pick up a tall mid is that I don't trust us to take next year's. We are just as likely to have someone like Brennan Cox lined up as we seek to fast track the rebuild.

I'd prefer to trade next year's first to get a Phillipou, hell I'd take Hewett or Humphrey or MacKenzie too, trade 2024 out for a player (given we'd have to), then take f/s Tyler Welsh with later picks.

If not this year, when will we get a tall mid?

The thing is I just don't think we are going to get one. Not when the narrative out of the club is that Berry is a big body, or that Sloane has bulked up.

Why would we trade next year's first for Brennan Cox when he becomes a free agent in 2024?

I dont know what our plan is, but with Tyler Welsh coming through in 2024 there's an opportunity to trade our 2024 first into 2023 or for a decent player.

My hopes for next three drafts:

2022
Trade in 2023 first for Phillipou OR
2023 first, 2023 second and North second for Phillipou and receiving clubs 2023 first OR
Trade future second for Barnett

2023
Draft Ashton Moir if no Phillipou
Trade 2024 first for an experienced player coming into prime.

2024
Draft Tyler Welsh
Free agent Brennan Cox

I'll admit I don't have time to go through full games.
Rewatched the highlights and one decent kick 55 out to just shy of the line.
The rest maybe he was pulling his kicks and highlights don't show this aspect.

Appears to be an accurate kick though 👍
Honerstly he's a precision kick something we really need for our forwards to lead onto, wing/half back/outside mid.

I presume we must have tried to get North's pick 3.

Surely we are not sitting around not having a go?

No currency - we can't give them their 2nd back

I could see why clubs would say no.
It is frustrating that other clubs seem to get it done in circumstances like this. Eg Port and JHF + Rozee.
Were you suggesting our 2023 1st and 2023 both 2nd's for North's Pick 3?

I agree, getting these kinds of trades seems always too hard for us.

Melbourne have offered 3 firsts for Essendon's 4 and 22.

No way we are trading into the top of the draft
Pretty clear Jason Taylor/Melbourne rate the top end this year better than any 2 players they could pick up with the 2 2023 picks they hold.

Or for that matter any player they could pick this year with their current pick.

You'd hope that a top 5 pick would be better than two late firsts in a future year

I think the club has had the right strategy the least two years in going for high quality players in their early 20s and I think we need to continue that over the next few. Our list is too young to keep bringing in 18 year olds.

Even if Phillipou does become a good mid, it's likely going to take 5 years to start producing what we need in the now

Try and use our first next year on a good mid.

23/1 on Phillipou and then trade our 24/1 on an established mid in the next trade period.

I'm not sure I'd do the trade but I think we are still in the mix for Lukosius..They paid way overs to keep him and will need to offload him in the next few years.
