Is there a rule which mandates drafting players. For example, if a team traded in players using all their draft picks.

I understand the senior list must turnover by three each year but is the draft compulsory in doing that?

At the moment, yes, a team needs to take three draft picks (either senior, pre-season or rookie picks).

I'm unclear what you mean.
Are you saying a club must go to the draft or could refresh their list in other ways?

Must take three picks but rookie upgrades count as picks Rookie selections don’t count We have two compusary upgrades this year so must take one pick

Impressive, where’s he expected to go
Good question....I've rated him for 2 years now, not spoken about much this year with a late start to the season with groin issues and playing mostly forward until he got up to full fitness and only played the last Nationals game. Was probably late/rookie up until 6 weeks ago only because of lack of exposure but he's been absolutely dominating the last few weeks. Could go as high as the 2nd round because if he stays fit he'll light up the Combine and this is a draft light on for rucks especially with his athleticism.

It’s a funny one

All the rage is that Harry Barnett from westies will go late 1st round - early 2nd round

I think Verall is a better AFL ruck in future than Barnett

He got invited to National combine so I think he’s formed from rookie pick , to late draft and now maybe even 3rd round

Maybe even earlier than that given he’s getting better each week having returned from injury just over a month ago

That vision demonstrates he has better vertical leap and ruck skill in centre bounce than Barnett too

And football talent in general with his around the ground work

The reasons why No.1 pick should be on trade table

If North Melbourne, as expected, holds the No.1 pick by the end of this weekend, the Kangaroos should be putting it on the table and see what's up for grabs. There are several factors why.

Should North bid – it would be very hard not to this year – they have options. Do they stay at pick No.2 and take George Wardlaw, who has been viewed as the other leading contender for the top pick? Or do they look to turn the selection into multiple picks, splitting it and making a brave call to turn one great pick into more very good ones?

The complicating factor with Wardlaw is his lack of games this season. Many recruiters still believe he could be the best player out of the pool: the midfielder is tough, explosive and a game-breaker who has been best afield in his two biggest games this season (for Oakleigh against Sandringham in round one of the NAB League season and for the NAB AFL Academy against Collingwood's VFL side in May).

Can No.1 (which would become No.2 after a bid) be turned into two top-10 picks? Would it be worth the Roos shifting back a few spots, taking one of Elijah Tsatas, Jhye Clark or Cam Mackenzie as their midfielder or half-forward Harry Sheezel and seeing if they can take a second early selection?

Last year North Melbourne rejected big back-to-back bids for the No.1 choice from Adelaide and Melbourne as it was locked in on Jason Horne-Francis. This time around, as the Roos make a play for an assistance package of priority picks, they should see what's on offer.

Not sure if we'll be able to grab him late. He's a top 30-ish prospect, for mine

That follow-up work is quality
But he's hardly rated a mention on Big Footy apart from me? ;) I've stuck thick all the way through his ups and downs.

Yep full credit, could end up like Willis last year (another of your faves) where he gets selected ahead of a bunch of more hyped SA prospects
That Oppo ruck he was pushing around there Jayden Matz is no pushover either, one of the better 2023 ruck prospects and already a U18 squad member this year.

Central's have a couple worth keeping an eye on next year Matz and lively little mid Trent Tattoli also already an U18 squad member this year.

I prefer Barnett over Verrall
A bit taller and more athletic and versatile

It's definitely time we invested in a developing ruck, instead of continually sifting through the hard rubbish piles on the side of the road.
It's baffling that we don't seem to be even trying to improve our ruck situation. Clarke has been ruck coach for bloody ages too. Time for a fresh set of eyes imo. Let Clarke go full time with the womens side.

More athletic and versatile?

I've seen plenty of both , Will Verrall is an athletic beast and looks pretty bloody good when played up forward as well

In all likelihood you'll have to pony up a fair bit more draft collateral for Barnett simply because he's had more exposure in their top age year.

I'm happy to use a better draft pick once every 10 years for a better ruckman,

I'm keen on refreshing people in their positions once they start to look stale.
Clarke however has been very good for us. Afterall, he took a tall bloke who could run and turned him into an AFL ruckmen. Pretty good considering that bloke has zero football talent (or even average coordination).

Rielly O'Brien should be forever grateful for the coaching of Doc Clarke.

Let's face it Doc has never been given a decent young ruckman to work with and mould. Rookies, basketballers or the last one Strachan was grabbed out of the Bendigo Football League after a few games in the now defunct VFL Development League basically the VFL reserves. Luke Lowden and Angus Graham another couple of list cloggers we recruited..
