Would be hilarious for the lols if North took another South Australian, ie Philipou with an early pick.
It’ll be interesting to see if, and for how long, NM might be spooked picking up SA/WA kids for after the JHF debacle

That said, I feel like the JHF situation is very much once in a blue moon

Exactly if Essendon want the same player it aint happening especially when it's become quite clear Ashcroft Cadman, Wardlaw and Sheezel are gone prior...
I still think north will take wardlaw and tsatas and sheezel will go to essendon on the night

It seems that with Hawthorn putting up their pick and they were heavily linked to Phillipou, the tea leaves are reading Essendon want the player and not to do a deal. he will be taken at their pick imo
Just can’t see that happening surely they are just throwing a bait to see what it attracts.
They have the sloppy seconds (vernacularus Malinauskus ) of Phillipou and Tsatas , if they were to pass up on either
with a current midfield like this they should be investigated for Harley Reid tampering.

MM is similar is size and shape to Ben Hart at the same age albeit maybe a little bit skinnier - skinny but also wiry and athletic. A strength of Max's is his reading of the game and can play on talls and smalls so if he can develop like we hope, he could become a very nice piece in the defence long term
Very good observation 👍

Think 99% of reports are saying it’ll be Wardlaw/Sheezel, but stick with your gut I guess

FWIW I reckon they’re on the money in regards to both needs and talent with the Wardlaw/Sheezel combo. I actually like Wardlaw more than Ashcroft/Cadman

Pick 5 was way overs for Rankine and have shot ourselves in the foot.

As it is going into 2023 we have no A grade midfield prospects.
Correction - no midfield prospects with A+ potential (and don’t get me wrong, we still need one of these)

Berry and Soligo have certainly shown the projection that they could eventually get to A-/A status IMO

Disagree, Rankine was was the number 1 priority and unless we held pick 1 there is no way we could have been certain of getting any particular player let alone Phillipou. As it turns out pick 5 likely won't get us Phillipou anyhow.

Sheezel won't go to the Bombers, they are clearly targetting a bigger bodied midfielder, if it's not Phillipou it will be either Tsatas or Humphrey who both the Bombers and the Hawks have put a lot of work into also.

If anything our defensive stocks aren't amazing.

Doedee has yet to really put a full season together in 7 seasons. Will he?
Butts regressed in 2022.
Murray may not make it, limited talent compared to others across the competition and realistically we will need better - Brennan Cox free agency?
Jones is a half back flanker but a loose one, no guarantee he makes it.
Milera didn't play defence in 2022 but that's his best spot. Similar to Doedee, can he put a season together?
Hinge only new, but showed some good signs in 2022. I'd pencil him into the future best 22.
Worrell came on strong late in the year. Hopefully continues that into 2023.
Parnell didn't convince me he's a lock with his ten games, might be too small.

There's a lot of ifs and maybes in there.

If we were desperate for Phillipou the smart play would have been hold strong on offering future first for Rankine. He was never not coming.

I think we could have made a deal with Essendon for pick 4 if it came to it, and Phillipou caught wind he could stay in SA.

Sorry I disagree, Rankine was our number 1 priority all along.

I don't disagree that we have good midfield prospects capable of A- as you say.

Soligo, Berry, Schoenberg, hopefully Pedlar and Taylor, maybe 60% Rachele. I'm happy we have these guys as they do look promising.

But to win a flag, or at least contend over multiple seasons?
In most instances you need an A+ mid and it worries me because I have felt we are on the right path for the most part.

quite simply had we not prioritised Rankine, it would have been hung around our necks for a long time to come if he continues his upward trajectory

He is a super talent and we are going to be bloody lucky we have him
