If that was /is true and clubs were anticipating list sizes to increase, there will almost certainly be some clubs with tighter salary caps (not us) having to change plans and jettison some players to clubs with salary cap room (ie ones like us) this year. A good year to to have a lot of salary cap space.
Opposite way round isn't it? Clubs were expecting to have to fit two more main list players under the cap which has stayed the same?

It's hard to critique Carmichael on his 2022 performance .....give him a full PS of fitness and gym work

Neither he nor Turner have stirred my enthusiasm to date though
McAdam's brother goes ok though...

I think it's more about having to pay out contracted players, to create vacancies for the draft, because they don't get 2 free list spots that they were previously planning on using to draft new kids.

Where do we stand with Nicks now?

Positives
  • Attracting talent (Dawson/Rankine/Hately/etc)
  • Building off-field support (Burgess/)
  • Getting team buy-in (all players seem committed to his messaging/direction)
Negatives
  • Stubborn player selections (Too slow with his position/player changes)

I'm voting stay. We are getting a really great core team. We just need a skills coach / more refined game plan.
Another positive is rebuilt the club culture (was obviously in far worse shape in 2019 when he took over than we realised at the time)

Totally agree with your negative. Selection and field positioning has been putrid all year...

Trading in Brennan Cox would be ideal for the club as suddenly we have a back line of:
Butts - 198
Cox - 195
Worrell - 194
Murray - 194

Butts, Murray and Cox can take the leading 192+ forwards with Worrell to play intercepting defender playing on smalls and talls. I think we are still missing a small defender as Parnell is liggt, probably Macpherson is the option but would one other. Jones needs to play higher up the ground.

With this change it releases Hinge, Dawson and Doedee. The hope is that during the off season these guys are played in the midfield to see if one can step up as a genuine inside/outside mid.

Cox would assist in that progression

Feel like we’re missing backline athleticism if we play all four of those talls

I wouldn't mind us playing Murray up forward and in the ruck with Thiltborpe.
Yeah I don’t mind the idea of Murray as a forward. Wonder if he can get an extended run of games there at some point (if it’s true we’re after BZT, that could help with that)

Interestingly, we now have just 2x uncontracted players on our senior list (Rowe & Frampton)... and we need a minimum of 4x vacancies, to accommodate Rankine and the minimum 3x ND selections (which can include rookie upgrades).

Assuming Twomey's information is correct, and the AFL has lied again - and is refusing to return list sizes to pre-COVID levels - then the implication is that we are planning on trading at least 1x contracted player this year. I expect the other vacancy to be created by Seedsman either retiring or being moved to the rookie list (and thence to the inactive list).

If we're planning on trading in multiple players, or drafting more than 1 player in the ND, then multiple contracted players will need to be traded out.

Upgrading rookies counts correct?

Yep, players decide to leave clubs every year and it's not made public til the off season but no hiding behind the list numbers.

Interestingly Strauchan offers similar mobility to ROB but with better skills. It's clear the club doesn't see a future of them playing together.

So with Collingwood's interest in Frampton to play a second mobile ruck option, do we actually keep Frampton and start playing 2 rucks and let Strauchan go to another club?

I'm not worried about contracted players wanting to leave. I'm just drawing attention to the fact that we're reliant on them leaving this year, in order to meet the AFL's mandatory minimum list changes.

It wouldn't be a Crows season without the club paying someone to not play for them.

Yeah, I get that.

My point was, the club can say publicly this and that about certain players being required etc, try to keep everything in house.

In the end, there is no hiding behind the numbers that say some have to go.
