I don't mind Sloane playing midfield next season as long as he's 1 of 6

If we keep our stupid 4 inside mid structure though and he's taking up a full time centre square slot that would be a dire result.

Some centre square time split with some half forward time would be ok

Sloane was pretty decent in the half forward role, wasn't he?

We could certainly use some tackling pressure in other areas of the ground aside from the contest.

How concerned would we be about our inexperience?

The youngest team / squad. Plus Brown, Sloane, Seedsman all with injury/health concerns. Crouch on the outer.

Are we content to just let our young players grow together over the next few years? Solve our inexperience issue organically. Or will we seek to hurry things along & balance things up to a degree by trading out a couple of younger players and perhaps targeting a mature ager or two?
Is Jed Anderson worth a go as a DFA? Hard at it, has good skills and can find a bit of the ball

Interestingly, we now have just 2x uncontracted players on our senior list (Rowe & Frampton)... and we need a minimum of 4x vacancies, to accommodate Rankine and the minimum 3x ND selections (which can include rookie upgrades).

Assuming Twomey's information is correct, and the AFL has lied again - and is refusing to return list sizes to pre-COVID levels - then the implication is that we are planning on trading at least 1x contracted player this year. I expect the other vacancy to be created by Seedsman either retiring or being moved to the rookie list (and thence to the inactive list).

If we're planning on trading in multiple players, or drafting more than 1 player in the ND, then multiple contracted players will need to be traded out.
I think we may see 2-3 players traded out.

Correct... but they still need senior list vacancies to move into.
Can't we just change our senior/rookie mix... & have less rookie?

ie. Don't backfill those promoted to the senior list.

Looking at him this year (and a bit the year before), I'd suggest the following playing splits for Sloane (If we are determined to play him in the middle that is):

Qtr 1: FWD 100% MID 0%
Qtr 2: FWD 90% MID 10%
Qtr 3: FWD 60% MID 40%
QTR 4: FWD 50% MID 50%

This will give him a chance to play in the midfield, once the speed is gone from the game.

Although personally I would not have him playing midfield at all.
Sloane said he thought he'd be playing a fair bit forward, but now with Rankine, Rachele TT, Fog etc in the forward line perhaps he'd have to play in the backlines
If that's his thought process it's a good sign

I think we're ok, but I can see the club being worried

Some of those contracted players are dead wood anyway. Brown and McPherson can always be told their time is up and have their contracts paid out if we need the list spots.
We could push them to the rookie list.

I don't remember him having much impact up forward but we rarely persisted with it for any length of time. As soon as he had a quiet quarter he was straight back in the middle. I agree that his tackling pressure would be good plus he's a decent mark for his size. He should be able to impact the game as a half forward. The biggest thing would be for him to accept that he can no longer be a prime midfielder. Seems to be a real badge of honour thing

We have a good core that hopefully hit that 70-150 mark all at once in the next 3 years

A fit Sloane would be an upgrade on Rowe, Murphy & McHenry!

It's not like any had a major impact this year.

Sloane likely will next year, Crouch likely traded & Seedsman doubtful.

The club would, and should, be very worried. We're the youngest by some margin, and it includes those players mentioned above.

Adding Rankine and a few draftees is great, but we desperately need a few more players in the 22-28 range.

I covered that in a later post.

In 2022 we went with a 39/5 mix, opting to select Nankervis in the PSD instead of waiting for the RD. We have the option of going to a 40/4 mix, but that only creates a maximum of one more senior list position.

Questions on their longevity:
Seedsman
Brown
Hamill
MacPherson

All four under contract. Hamill for a couple of years from memory.
I think Seedsman will retire or be put on the rookie list for a year and not play
Brown I think will play out his final year in the sanfl
Hamill depends how many more concussions he gets, one more bad one next year and he would seriously need to start thinking of life after footy
MacPherson, not sure where he stands or whose spot he takes ? Smiths spot.
Smith is the big worry for me, has 2 more years and I thought he was pretty bad for most of this year. He didn't deserve his spot in the team most weeks.

Sloane is cooked, coming off an ACL.

I will be surprised if he can make an impact at SANFL level.
I can see a repeat of the Milera situation playing out here.
Get him in round 1 as a reward for all the hard work with his rehab and then stink it up for the rest of the year but we persevere to the detriment of the team.
Lets hope he comes back well and can contribute

We might get in trouble if we get too many injuries to senior players.

But we should only bring mature talent that will play long term for us. And there's only so many gettable targets

Smith is far, far, far away from being dropped.

Without him we have next to ZERO run and carry from the back line. Hamill has shown glimpses but can't seem to go on with it, Parnell needs time, Jones often looks to be almost a lock-down wingman at time but doesn't show much offensively, and Hinge is OK but not exactly lightning quick.

Smith's spot is safe as houses.
