Out:
De Koning - Looks good in the ruck, but is not a forward... Could he be a defender like his brother?
O'Brien - Like O'Brien (really want him to make it)... but looks slow and fumbley of late, maybe a rest and push Docherty to the wing...
Boyd - Unfortunately has to make way for Saad...
In: Saad, Martin, Motlop

Next in Line: Dow & Stocker

Why unfortunately for Boyd.
He wasnt very good.
Not ready to play at this level

Boyd out for Saad. Obvious as Boyd was terrible again. Lost almost all interactions.
Martin in for Lob. Walsh to wing.

Lob hurt my eyes in this game. I think on balance 1 good game, one ok game and one poor game. But his physicality is just so grating. Walsh to the wing right now and Lob to the 2s.

A few at risk. TDK is making simple things look really hard in the fwd 50. Almost becoming a ‘nearly awesome player’, a bit like Esava. The cost of TDK and Pitto is run late in the game. GC will just run and run. I want silver as backup ruck in that game and only play 1 ruck.

Plowman with ball on the deck running backwards towards opponent goal is terrible. His confidence looks so low in that situation. Please Marchy show us something soon.

Fish was quiet today. Needs a good game. Reprieve because of two fair previous games.

Cripps should not be taking kicks or receiving the ball 50-70 from goal. He should run inside 50 for the marking mismatch he provides. Yes, awesome play right now but terrible decision maker around 50-70 out from goal. No one should pass it to him in that range.

Didnt mind Youngs game. Loved JSoS game. Kennedy good again. Hewett crazy in last along with Doc. Love those guys.
Whos Silver?

Need to bring Martin in as a starter this week. Provides just as much aerially, if not more, than TDK. 0 marks from TDK is not great at all. Saad is also an auto inclusion.

We'll see what comes of the Pittonet injury situation.

Definites...
In: Saad
Out: Boyd

Martin starts, one of Owies or Fisher sub.

We've got some good options in the reserves to cover for any COVID-related absences: Stocker, Dow and Motlop are all worthy of AFL appearances now.
Owies stays.

In 95 carlton played two of their worst home and away games in consecutive weeks. Looked like they were odds on to win the spoon.

And a small earthquake was registered in Perth at exactly the same time that the Duke ran through Bluey Mckenna. Was brutal.

Can't remember how the season ended though. Did we do good?

Beware omens

In 2012 a failing blues team lost at Metricon, ending the coach and gave us a miserable near ending after being 5 and 1!

I think McInnes did his knee in the first 15 seconds

Yikes

I still have nightmares

Best game at either level I’ve seen him play. He ran hard all day. Chased when it was his turn.

His hands in traffic are absolutely elite. He should be strongly considered for a call up. He was leagues ahead of them today.

His improved running is a credit to him. Well done Paddy.
i missed the VFL but that's great to hear, hopefully the penny has finally dropped along with a fair run at it, fitness-wise.

watching Cerra, Hewett, Kennedy, Walsh and Cripps ahead of and Carrol breathing down his neck will be the making or breaking of him.

was it enough to push him in front of one of the incumbents or is it a case of injury or suspension getting him a break?

Work him through the midfield rotations/bench.
His hands are terrific and he has that burst that’s crucial …

Yeah I just don't get people disagreeing with that. Seemed like everytime Fisher had the ball outside 50, he'd kick it to an outnumber.

Would have liked to have seen him be a bit more bold with the ball. We really had the chance to ice the game in the last of only he and LOB took shots. I think he stays purely for the ability to rotate as an outside mid.

At some point Motlop will come in - I think Owies is the most vulnerable. I really like Owies - works hard, tough. However, only 2 goals from three games is a slow start. If Motlop comes in and starts bagging two goals a game with the same forward pressure then I think it’s Owies. Durdin shows too much spark around the goals, is a good mark overhead and exerts heaps of pressure - he was unlucky not to have three goals yesterday.

Everyone plays a role, but the role for goals is that. The bloke who’s a forward and puts them regularly through the big sticks is best value to the team.

Then there’s Honey…. Far out!

It’s really tough to see what is going to happen.

No reason why we can't play all three of Motlop, Owies and Durdin for mine. Fisher the one to make way. Don't lose anything creatively and I think Motlop could play the exact same role with far more tackling pressure. Honey also needs to be introduced back into the team once fit so for mine Fisher will be the one to make way in that instance too.

It's no slight on Fisher, he's a handy player but we have better, more impactful options coming through (both offensively and defensively). He will still play plenty of senior games but shouldn't be an automatic selection.

Agree that we should get Martin into the team for his defensive running and smart forward play. Will be much better at dragging intercept defenders away from the action.

Unsure if TDK should come out or we give him another week to get some momentum going. I suspect he's lost a bit of confidence over the first three weeks having not managed to kick a goal. You could see he was filthy when Owies took the advantage after a TDK free kick close to goal against Richmond, the same when a small floated across him and took a mark that was destined for TDK's chest. Think he's been really hoping he can contribute on the scoreboard and it hasn't worked out to date. He'll be fine, coaches will reinforce that it's the team dynamic that makes the forward line function properly.

That's actually one of the most positive things to take out of the Hawks game, in that we have Ash Hansen pulling the strings on the forward line. He will deliver the right message this week and I expect things will turn around swiftly. Clean up our entries inside 50 and get our forwards working as a group and we are almost there.

Definitely think there's merit in considering shifting Walsh to the wing in place of O'Brien, and adding Dow into the midfield mix. Might slightly upset the dynamic, especially if Dow is not doing the defensive work, but hopefully he can slot in and get some chemistry going with the others. Despite finding a lot of the footy Walsh hasn't been quite his usual self so a stint on the wing won't do him any harm imo. LOB has been okay so far but again, no issue with him playing reserves here and there.

Paddy Dow knocking on the door again.

30 touches, 15 clearances and 2 goals in the VFL.

Motlop with 4 goals also.

Not a spot for them yet though.
The problem for patty is that I don’t think there is a spot for him in the side unless one of the five midfielders is injured. Doesn’t have enough alternative strings to his bow

Something I've noticed with Durdin is he also has a knack for bobbing up in the defensive 50 and helping to move the ball out. Not all the time, but couple of times a game you'll see a little defensive cameo from him. Happened yesterday, can't remember which quarter, rode a big bump just outside the forward 50, ball was in dispute going into our forward 50, Hawks won it and slingshotted back, all of a sudden Durdin is involved in a little handball chain near the defensive goalsquare.

Not with Setters and LOB playing their roles. If one of them falters we could see Walsh/Cerra get a bit more wing time to accommodate Paddy getting a run on-ball. Probably coincides with Kennedy spending a few more of his minutes up forward.

Regardless of form, Dow’s issue is that the club brought in two mids and Kennedy is a non-negotiable walk up start. He’s well behind the midfield pecking order.

Fisher perplexes me. When he kicked that goal in the last quarter vs Richmond I thought he turned the corner with his goal kicking and regained his confidence to take the shot. Yet yesterday in the last quarter (or it may have been the 3rd) he was 40 m out and on the correct side for his left foot and rather than have a shot he went for a pass to H who would’ve been on an angle, on the wrong side for his left foot, and the pass was poor and hawks got the rebound.

Owies and Durdin are really going to put the pressure on Fish, as will a fit Martin. Plus we have Honey to come back in.

The back line will see some changes over the next month. Voss also needs to think carefully about TDK - he’s such an “almost” player with his almost marks. If he’s going to be a forward then he needs to work on his kicking which is VERY shaky. A poster did suggest putting him in the back line - I’m not so adverse to that suggestion if he learns the craft, but he’ll need to work on his kicking and no doubt if Harry or Charlie miss a game, he will be thrust forward.

I'm a hard taskmaster when it comes to H, but that was up there with his best games. Still the poor decision to fling himself back in the hope of a free rather than attacking the ball at a crucial stage, but twice attacked the ball and took great marks with the vigour expected of a man his size, not to mention the chase. More than bags of goals, I want to see those efforts as his base line. He may be coming of age this season - still only 70 odd games.

LOB isn't an AFL player. We're playing him in the desperate hope that he turns into something. Admittedly, I only skim these days, but the vibe on here towards LOB seems very different to the vibe at the ground and among all the Carlton supporters I know. Opponent must lick his lips lining up on him. Offers very little of value, imo.

Owies isn't an AFL player, but tries hard. Can't believe people are talking about Durdin and Owies as comparable - one has clear AFL traits, the other, unfortunately for him, doesn't. Got nothing against the guy, but it's bewildering to have a player of Martin's quality on the sidelines, by choice, while playing someone on Owies' level.

Hewett was great, as were JSOS, Doc and Weiters. Liked Setters' game. Charlie and H very exciting. Having watched the replay, Cripps looked genuinely ill pre-game - like he was trying not to vomit almost?? I wonder if there was anything in that bc didn't seem quite his 2022 self, but was still very very good. Happy with Lewis Young - kept it simple but still took a nice mark at one stage, when needed. If he can get his fist on the ball, he has a spot. Will be good to have Saad back - missed his run big time. The momentum swung back our way when Doc took the run down the middle - that was us playing our way. From qtr time until that point, game had been on Hawks' terms and they just stopped our style. With Saad, I doubt they'd have had as much success shutting us down.

Thought Williams and Cerra were a little disappointing - especially Williams. Said it last week as well - love the guy, but he's not the player he was at GWS for us, yet. Does some very good stuff, but the fumbles, not going when it's his turn etc .. didn't used to see that at GWS.

We're very lucky to be 3-0 but we deserve a bit of luck... With wins comes confidence and greater momentum.. I hope. Snag the next couple and we basically can't miss finals.....

The great thing is, we've got a little lucky, but we're only at the absolute beginning of a new game with a new coach. We will get better at that side of things, like changing things up to counter opponents' tactics etc, with time. With more experience together, our approach would have changed when we saw their defence getting on top with the long kicks and we'd have lowered the eyes to find unexpected targets. Stuff to look forward to, not to mention quite a bit of quality on the sidelines atm.

I have enough daily nightmares to contend with, did you have to remind me of the day this old country boy finally managed to se my beloved Blues “in the flesh”.

Returning to the scene of the crime on Sunday. Managed to find some accommodation among the school holiday Gold Coast chaos. Going to be “fun” managing miss 5 ( well almost 6) while watching both VFL and AFL games. Hope there is some free WIFI at Metricon.

I don't think I've seen him run and chase that much before. The run down tackle he laid was superb.

100% this. It was like we had an extra player at times. Players like that are gold dust.

From the reasonable sample we've seen this year (and some glimpses last year) Durdin is a tough nut that hurts the oppo in the contest and on the scoreboard. Most definitely safe at the selection table.

The days of midfielders only running towards goal are over as we saw with Melbourne last year their transformation was all about the likes of Oliver and Petracca working harder to get back and help their defenders. A large part of the reason we are better this year is because our midfielders are running harder both ways than they have in the past. I’d imagine one of the main reasons Dow is out of the team is because he hasn’t been able to show he can run defensively enough. If/when he gets his chance he will need to show he’s improved that part of his game otherwise he’ll be back in the 2’s pretty quickly.
