Doubt Marchy would be considered off 1 game in the 2s on managed minutes (rested last quarter) but who knows. Possible outs from todays performance would be Martin (injury - and quiet even before that), Boyd, Owies and Durdin. Cottrell did well given he only came on at half time and I thought Owies and Durdin did OK at their jobs, just a little quiet. Durdin more likely at risk but he seems to be being used further up the ground than the small forward position he nominally plays and that means there are different metrics to the ones usually used for a small forward (mainly goals, goals assists and defensive pressure inside 50). Boyd was I thought better than he previously has been and seems to be a bit of a match committee favourite so may survive another week. I think he has tremendous upside if he can adjust to the pace of firsts footy and in particular if he can bring his exquisite kicking skills evident at lower levels to the big time. Harry was a bit quiet but you can't have everybody kicking a bag and this week the chances fell more to Charlie than him. How many changes there may be might turn on who is fit next week. Hewett if fit is an automatic in, Plowman maybe also. In the 2s I liked the game of Fogarty and Dow again produced big numbers but benefited from Mirkov spoon feeding him and didn't do much otherwise. Marchbank was great for 3 quarters but unlikely to be ready for the step up this soon.

The MC have clearly looked to replace like for like, on that basis I'd suggest Fogarty for Martin. If Hewett is right to come back in he might pip Fogarty even though it is not like for like. I don't think any of the mids deserve to be squeezed out on todays performance.

Watched a fair bit of the Cats Giants game. Cats were brilliant in denying the Giants access to the corridor. Created a line of players all well spread and cut off the space for the kick back into the corridor from half back. Made them go down the line to a contest and just kept mopping it up around the ball.

I expect the Giants to go for a lot more dare this week with that kick, knowing that is how some teams have managed to score quickly against us. Hopefully we get that structure right, because GWS barely fired a shot being shut down this way. Haynes not at the same level he has been at, Flynn not that great in the ruck. Who takes Tobey? Not sure, could be Williams.

Can we notch an away win? Was at the GC game and we were all at sea across all parts of the ground and never got our game going. Same away vs Freo. Against GWS, I actually think we are the better side on paper now. I think we should win this. 7-2... Go Blues

Thought Boyd was really serviceable tonight, but as mentioned above given GWS play tall in attack you’d imagine he comes out for Plow.

Voss was far from convincing when asked about Hewitt mid week so he may not be back until the Swans game.

Who comes in for Martin? Has to be out of Motlop and Kemp.. Motlops recent body of work should probably give him the nod to earn himself a debut. Can’t wait to see him in action on the big stage, feel he’s made for it. GB’s

Would love to see Walsh out to the wing if Hewett is back - reckon he’s been a bit slow in getting going and part of that is playing big chunks of game time in an inside role.

Hard to replace Martin, shame Honey isn’t ready. Motlop the obvious choice. Not opposed to bringing Stocker in, shifting Doc upfield and playing Williams forward. Probably too drastic a change for a HFF.

Think Plowman needs to come in for Toby Greene.

I’ve tipped the Blues to win every round so far this year but I’m not sure I’ll be tipping them this week - some teams just match up well against others for example Us v Bulldogs, Gold Coast v Sydney, Saints v Hawks, Sydney v West Coast - and unfortunately GWS v Us.

The other thing with GWS is they are a bunch of head cases - some weeks they look like kings the next like peasants - but they are way better than their record suggests and they tend to respond when they get a bit of kick in the arse after a poor performance.

I fully expect they will come breathing fire this weekend so it’ll be a huge test of how much we’ve improved this year and I am really excited to see if we can meet what they bring and give them back some of our best which is pretty good.

It goes without saying we need to quell Toby and Whitfield who routinely kill us but at least there’s no Finlayson this year and I’m not sure their backline can handle this version of H and Charlie, so I’m still hopeful of a win.

IMO the only changes will be forced so if Martin’s injury keeps him out maybe Cottrell comes in (to play a negating role on Whitfield) or Plowman to give us a bit more height down back.

C’arn the Blues!
