It's hard to shake off that selfless Geelong culture.
I don’t but it for a second, the guy clearly has ideological reasons for doing what he’s doing..

Robert Harvey senior assistant at saints
they havent mentioned whether they're keeping Benny Jacobs, with Patch becoming our fwd coach would be cool to see him back at the club as a development coach

Curtis was great for a second rounder.
We were due a good one.
Perez, Mahoney, Lazzaro, comben, Kyron, Bergman, goater, (I have probably missed some) have not improved our seniors whatsoever at this stage. Some have been on the list 3 years already.
You need to look at the whole picture not just concentrate on the 1 successful pick we have had.
In a few games Perez has.

We're due some second rounders to give us something. If we get good returns from Perez, Comben, Goater and Curtis we'll be in a good situation for the next five years. Anything else would be a bonus.

I agree with your basic point tho but I think a more accurate picture would be found if we got figures for first rounders and players up to pick 25 and compared them against the rest of the second round, then the third. There is a big difference between players in the early 20s and mid 30s usually. Especially in a strong draft. Even Ben McKay was a first rounder but went at 21.

Also, I've wondered how much of these stats are an artifact of the way AFL clubs manage lists and not necessarily a reflection of talent. Second rounders are less likely to get game time over first rounders, they have to really work to get it and they are more likely to get delisted. They may be as talented but miss development opportunities etc.

One final point ... 2nd rounders can be higly ranked players who slide due to injury as well. For example Comben and Perez. Not only does injury increase their chances of not making it it slows their dvelopment so they may take a year or more longer to get to 50 games than an uninjured player.

I guess what I'm saying is ... well for a start look at our 2nd round drafting since 2015.

- Ryan Clarke is the only one with a half decent career isn't he? BUt Curtis, Perez, Goater and Comben still have loads of potential from the little they've shown so far. -

So those averages can be gamed a bit if you have good recruitment and development and poor efforts like our over the last 8 seasons can lower the averages as well. And the depth of the draft class probably makes a difference.

Nailing those second round piucks isn't just a matter of luck, it takes competence as well.

If we bundle up picks 2 and 3 would GWS give us pick 1 and next year's 1st.

Would give us 3 1st rounders next year.

Yeah sure why not.
We seem to be the only team who can't get anything decent from GWS.

We should not even have a whipping boy thread in my opinion. Champion player great player average play not so good a player at the end of the day they are all North players. Please no one mention you know who.
Yeah, i agree.

Clubs have got better at drafting imo. This means more successful first round picks and more fails are pushed into the second round. I reckon the number of successful picks is pretty similar when comparing one draft to another years draft. Personally I reckon clubs put too much value in a player being ready to go. Clubs in our position need to improve next year not in the 2-3 years it may take to have a real jet to develop.
History says the top 5 are really the only sure things in each draft. It gets more speculative as the draft goes on. Folks love to point at clubs like Sydney getting guns in the second round. But if you look at the figures they have had there share of fails as well.
Some years bat deeper than others for sure. But by the time pick 20 comes around the bones have been picked out of most draft classes. It's just how it works.
For me if I had the choice of taking pick 20 in the draft or trading it for someone like Logue I would take Logue everyday of the week.

Sydney also have Darymple who is largely regarded as the best recruiter in the land. They’re not the ordinary.

He's not even the worst captain in the AFL last season!
That said, who's he got covered though? Heppell, that bloke from Hawthorn, you know, big bloke, bad hair, plays in the backline ...
