personally I want 2 top 10 picks for pick 1. Not interested in anything less. We need top level talent, we have enough role players.
I think the issue is there’s no real standout at 1 (Ashcroft aside) the whole point of being willing to split it will be the reason why it won’t be a huge haul, there’s no compelling reason for a club to covet the pick one at that expense.

I said this somewhat tongue in cheek yesterday but the club that might have the motivation to do a big trade for it might be brissy as it would give them a pick before any Ashcroft bid.

Okay using the 2018 draft as a hypothetical. Sam Walsh went at 1 and he is a great player. 5 and 7 were Conner Rozee and Bailey Smith.

As good as Walsh is I'd take the pair of Smith and Rozee.
Every draft is different and that was a super draft with really good tier 1 depth. We were sooo dumb to draft out of it rather than up.

Would you give up JHF for Ward and Gibcus (taking out the F&S picks)? No

5 and 7 is not close to being enough for pick 1 imo.
With the broadly equal spread of talent in the top bracket of the draft this year I would argue that 5 and 7 is about right for pick 1.

If there were 1 or 2 standouts at the top end of the draft (like last year) then fair enough - but it seems far more evenly spread this year so why not take 2 players instead of 1? Especially when we don't have many other picks.

Which one via Free agency? There's McStay, and he is off to the pies

I'd try and convince Kennedy to come out of retirement so he could play for a couple of years and maybe move into coaching after that. I know he only kicked 37 goals this year from 15 games, but he still went at 2.5 goals a game when he did get to play. We don't have anyone on the list who looks like they can take a mark at AFL level or looks like they can get on the park at all. Our midfield needs someone leading out towards them consistently so they can learn to run and carry the ball and not just launch high hang time bombs into the forward 50.

He is on 293 games, he will get to play 300 and I think he will be more useful than any of our older players save Cunners and Goldy.

We don't have great options, I said we should have got Wright when everyone said he was a donkey... we need to fix the structure and we can't just pray that Comben is going to be able to get on the grass.

Even Whateley was of this view, which says it all. Some on here are too desperate to split Pick 1 IMO.

We currently will leave the draft with:

Pick 1 - Wardlaw, Tsatas or Sheezel
F/S - Harvey

It is very likely that we get a priority pick, which I hope is Pick 11 but likely to be 19*. For all Bradys knocks, I will say that he is very good at acquiring more picks via trade period & draft night, expect this year to be no different.

I expect us when it's all said and done, that we will leave the draft with:

Pick 1 - Wardlaw, Tsatas or Sheezel
Pick 11 or 19 - Priority Pick
Pick 28-35 - Acquired through mechanism such as trading future second/third or not bidding on Aschroft
F/S - Harvey

We don't need to trade Pick 1 & should only trade it if we get an offer too good to refuse. Take who we think is best available, which could be any one of those three I've mentioned.

*In before TZ says we will be getting Pick 1 or 2 PP

Interesting that they say Cam wants to be a winner, and we know he wants to stay in Melbourne. So Essendon and us are the only two teams with offers to him, we are in a better situation to succeed than Essendon currently. Other successful Melbourne teams: Melbourne, Collingwood, Western Bulldogs and Richmond are all balls deep in recruiting other talent that would take their draft capital.

It’s realistically just us for Cam IMO.

Using the draft that was called the super draft and has proven to be the strongest in many years, isn't a great way to base an opinion IMO.

I don’t think you can underestimate the boost to “standard setting” that the coaching structure, assuming Clarko remodels this has.

I’m not overly keen on bringing in guys who are past it just for some “leadership” i think the targets should be ones who have developed run/strength/tank to show what’s needed in that way. This bringing in a retired or near retired player is a bit overrated for me

I wouldn't automatically exclude all the other Vic clubs just on assumption.

* seem to have loose lips but other clubs might've made moves on him far more quietly. Unfortunately.

Too early to tell. As shimaburnsgrieg has said it would depend on your perception of the top ten. If there were 1 to 3 absolute standouts you would be reluctant to give up access to one of them. If the top ten were all very close and hard to split I would value two chances over one.

I thought hawthorn/rich were keen

Kennedy is done and dusted. Cupboard is bare for kpfs

Sorry, this doesn't really mean anything to me. Comben has been on the list for 3 years and weighs 84kg. Edwards turns 20 in November and he is 85kg, these guys are around 15kg away from being able to hold up physically at AFL level. I do hope Clarkson boosts "standard setting" but he isn't a miracle man, he didn't perform miracles with the Hawks young players. If those two make it, I am guessing they will need a year to two in order for a half decent program to get results.

If he and the club thinks those two are worth developing then awesome. But we need something better than what we have going forward for next year and we need there to be some kind of baseline that a player needs to hit and we just aren't gifting games regardless of standard. This isn't just about the second key forward, we are harming Larkey's development forcing him to compete against 2-3 defenders because nobody else is a threat.

anyone wana run a google sheets rules report comparing pick 1 to 5 and 7 for the last 20 years.... wouldn't be too hard...

Isn't it funny how things change, two years ago you'd snap up De Goey and Ahern for McCartin and laugh your head off.

Brad hill? What’s the point? If we aren’t bringing in the absolute best like petracca, don’t even bother!
Our list is so strong with guys like mahony and lazz leading the way someone like Hill is no chance to get a game…

😉

Gee some of those 5s and 7s look pretty great.

I was in favor of 1 for 5 and 7 before this table. Even more so now
