The year is 2020

Brad Hill's first for the St Kilda Football Club. Hill is an elite kick of the football.

Max King's first full year at the St Kilda Football Club having spent 2019 in rehab, at Sandy and then injured. King is the next superstar key forward. Fellow forward Tim Membrey is coming off an equal career high tally of 44 goals.

The thought of Hill shooting laser like kicks across the ground and hitting King and Membrey on the chest conjures up memories for Saints fans of Winmar hitting up Lockett and Loewe in the 80s and 90s. It's a salivating thought, especially as the St Kilda team is full of ordinary field kickers.

Only minutes into the Community Series match at RSEA Park in February, Hill's first appearance in Saints colours, the ex-Docker receives the ball and spears it in to a leading Membrey. And the commentators and fans alike go crazy. This is why we went to such effort and paid so much to get him.

Sadly in the three seasons that have passed I would have been lucky to witness a handful of these 'Winmar/Lockett' moments.

Through a combination of game plan, playing position and Bradley's strangely inconsistent kicking, King, Membrey and Co. have not feasted out on Hilly's cooking.

In a way it would be sad to see his smiling face go, if that is in fact what happens. At this best he is a great player and is highly watchable.

But if he does go I will temper any disappointment by knowing he is not the player I thought we were signing up for.

Spot on Doc.

I reckon he's just one of those guys who needs the right conditions around him to shine. That's like a lot of more outside players, but also there's something about mental strength there. He's just not a leader who's going to pull the team along with him. That's not particularly a negative about him, not everyone can be that. But in a team already lacking leadership he's up against it to play well consistently.

He's a good guy, I hope we get a good price for him and he goes somewhere else and has a great future career. Can't see it being at the Saints though.

I don't think anyone has called the Hill trade a bargain.

Some are just willing to acknowledge we used our original pick 6 to bring in multiple players, not just Hill.

Howard and Ryder who lets face it weren't worth a first round pick. It was a stuff up and hopefully we learn from it. High picks like that should have been off the table for anything but absolute stars. If we'd just used the GWS picks we could have had Kosi Pickett and Bergman or Weightman types. Serong and Young were both after our original pick.

Really blew an opportunity for a bunch of GOPs which we have never had any trouble coming up with. It was really poor management IMO. Sides that drafted then have moved above us while we were trying to cheat the system instead of using a plan.

If Freo played hard ball we should have walked away.

In isolation acres and 10 for hill looks horrible, as the role of wingmen evolved to a less skilled more physical one.
Just bad timing.

But the overall trade period was a net gain.
Started with pick 6, Acres and Bruce.

Came out with Howard, butler, jones.
+3 years of paddy Ryder.
+3 years of hill and will get some change back from north.

And future and later picks. It was an absolute embarrassment and the fact that we are all desperately trying to off load him says that it was an unmitigated disaster that will go down as one of our more embarrassing moments.

We will pay for the lost draft year for a decade as well. The reason we still don't have a robust competitive list is because of just this kind of reckless trading. It's how to burn your future and not even progress in the short term.

Most people want another tall back, in all likelihood that pushes Howard out and Butler is around the same level as Lonie. Jones is a major disappointment.

I just hope that this is our moment to work out that the idiots that keep making mistakes aren't on the right path and hold them to account.

20/20 hindsight

Or having a plan. It was dumb then and it didn't even have the desired effect. We moved sideways but gave up heaps to do it. We are so conditioned to accept mediocrity that we praise the perpetrators.

Doogie is in a very similar boat to Hill I think.

He's clearly got the attributes to be way better than he shows in our team.

He's got all the hallmarks of being able to be a gun CHB, yet because we haven't developed or traded in a gun FB to replace brown- we stick him in a situation where he's not well suited and tell him to do his best.

His natural style is way too attacking to ever be a decent fullback
howard for pick ~18 or whatever it was is always gonna look crap unless we put him higher up the ground so he can play his natural game.

We really need a marcus adams, tom barrass type to make howard for pick 18 look good.

Same with hill- if we didn't play this garbage 'just bang the ball forward long and fast' crap and instead played a posession game- the hill trade cost would look fine.

So how will you personally hold them account gringo?
Unmitigated bs that Howard will be pushed out and Butler irony as good as Lonie.

Then you probably have to lose Battle or Wilkie who are looking hard to push out too.

The only thing mediocre is incessant spamming an internet forum with moaning without doing anything substantial about the situation.
Drop your membership, call a spill of the board, become president.
The impotent are always pure.

So what are you going to do to change it gringo instead of Monday quarterbacking?

Butler is not doing much since his first year IMO. You can pretend his pressure is fantastic but he's part of a very dysfunctional forward line. You like to pretend it's the players not the coaches until it not convenient in your argument.

The pure are always ignorant.

Agree

What is the fascination with getting this bloke???
It's mostly from Saints fans that don't watch Port games and just look at the stats I'm assuming. Kind of like the Taranto obsession. Both of them put up good numbers and are seriously overrated footballers.
Types that won't improve us as a side. You would think we learnt our lesson with Zac Jones but apparently not.

So when Nas W-M requests a trade back to Sth Aus in the next month, what are we asking for in return?

Personally, I’d like Kane Farrell & a pick (if Port). Would allow us to roll Farrell off half back & pinch-hit with Sincs in the guts more often. Would love Farrell’s long precision kicking in our team
Farrell. Another ok footballer that doesn't improve us. Why?

Plus highmore and coffield.

We have been complete idiots collecting 5 blokes who are all very decent chb/3rd defender type guys... that all mostly play the same way at their best.

Dumb dumb dumb dumb.

I didn’t want hill, Hannebery, Jones or Higgins for that matter and I’m happy enough to be fact checked. It‘s an opinion caper on here and I’d have been happier if I was wrong but I’m sure there are plenty of posters getting sick of being accused of calling things with the benefit of hindsight.

We have been reckless and transparent imo continually trying to cover up 1 mistake with another poorly planned scheme. We aren’t amazingly in terrible shape, now is the time to chase free agents and hit the draft. If we’re still short it’s rinse and repeat next year and so on. If you want a dusty, bont, Oliver, Gawn etc you draft them which is what we did when we came within a whisker of winning a couple of flags.

No short cuts!

It's huge for them. If nothing else it's. statement of intent. Even Blight at St Kilda got us players, members and attention. We all of a sudden looked serious. When it didn't work out the admin were stung into action under pressure too. Even if it fails to move them forward massively it's huge for them. Probably keeps their want aways and pulls in guys who never would have considered them.

Players already there will want to prove themselves and those that don't will be cut without emotion. I'm jealous to be honest. It really shows that they intend to move forward with a bit of momentum. We are in a safety first mode, scared to go straight up the centre, preferring to chip it around inside the defensive 50 until we turn it over.

Our board didn't want to chase Clarko preferring to have a spread of staff. We are like a drunk in the park laughing at those posh campaigners who spend $100 on a bottle of wine when we bought 8 casks of fruity lexia for the same money.
The soft cap makes it difficult to get a great coaching panel (especially in development) when you have a head coach on megabucks.

Clarko might have to cut the oranges up too in his new role.

Butler is another victim of our game style and Rattens inability to think outside the square. When he went back to the VFL Batchelor threw him onto the ball and he excelled. So what does Ratten do when returns to AFL let him rot in the forward pocket when our midfield look like they are running in 'quick sand'. Go figure?

Our list is a lot better than what we produced this year. Far too many players went backwards and it all points in one direction as far as Im concerned.

So I have called you on your complaints, what are you substantialally going to do about?

Don't answer and we can see you are full of bs.
its a discussion forum... he's discussing what the clubs is doing and their performance.

literally all of us are powerless to do anything. i remember stating i was gonna drop my membership and i got hounded down, said it wont help anything, just hurt the club. same people now are now saying the only thing we can do is cancel memberships.

tbh membership isn't our issue right now... lack of attendance is. that speaks more volumes than membership numbers.

Interesting hearing Roo's comments that the youth cupboard is bare. It feels like we are one good draft away from having a real nice group of kids. Need to hit the draft this year again.
one good draft away... are you kidding?
