For the record, I like Basset. You don't get to where he is in the business world without being a very smart businessman.

I really hope he can go with his gut this review and make the right decisions to improve our onfield performance.
I no it’s a popular line, but I don’t see how a guy who started an online recruitment agency that makes lots of money has anything to do with football though. I wouldn’t want Bill Gates running the Saints and he made a lot of money.

IMO, Ratts has a love affair with Hill, probably due to Hawthorn days.

I wouldn’t be surprised if his telling the team to “keep feeding it to Hilly” or words to that affect and blaming them publicly in his pressers (as he did) for not doing it, drove a bit of a wedge between Hill and the rest of the team.

Smacks of having a favourite child to me, and not very good man management. And while I know every coach would have favourites, it wasn’t handled in a great way for me, and possibly it bred the discontent we heard about? ( if there was any truth in it.)

So, when stavro#4 says that Ratts doesn’t want Hill to leave, I think the list management team really need to be strong about what’s best for the team and overrule Ratts if they disagree. Coach should not have the final say in this type of scenario.

Just my thoughts.
When the Saints got to 8 and 3 at the bye.
Hills was receiving the ball running through the corridor/ wings and delivering it lace out to the forward line.
Que the Midnight Oils song.....short memory must have are....

Maynard. 25yo Decent enough player from a second round draft pick. Taken well after Daniel McKenzie and Hugh Goddard. Before Jack Lonie.
Moore 26yo. F/S Never draft a key defender with a first round pick, except sometimes, but not if you think he's a key forward. (Paddy ).
Quaynor 22yo. NGA but at least Collingwood used a first round pick on him ( i think ). We got King in that Draft.
Daicos 19yo , F/S lucky bastards and Collingwood knew he was coming and traded their 2021 first rounder in 2020.
Howe 32YO. Collingwood gave up Ben Kennedy , and Seedsman for Howe. Probably one of the better outcomes of that complicated trade.
John Noble . 25yo from SAFL taken in the 2019 mid season draft.
Josh Daicos. 23yo F/S from a late pick
Pendlebury. 34yo. Taken in the same draft as Dave Armitage, who would have been handy if he'd been able to keep his body right.
Sidebottom, 31Yo , we traded all our players from this era for bags of magic beans.
Jamie Elliot , 30Yo , we traded for Milera and Saad, Pies traded for Elliot and Marty Clark. Stupid GWS bullshit. Anyway pies did better.
Mason Cox. 31YO, taken as an international rookie. We took Holmes. Pies did better.
Ginnivan. 19YO . 13th pick in last years rookie draft.
Lipinski, 24yo moneyball trade.
Mihocek, 29yo, taken well after Doobie Langlangs, and just a couple of picks before Lewis Pierce.
Hoskin Elliot, 29yo, a modest trade with GWS.
Darcy Cameron, 27yo, traded for a late pick swap.
Degoey 26yo, taken after all that McCartin Petraca bullshit. Bribed his mum to tell the Collingwood scouts that he made his bed ...even though he didn't.
Crisp, 28YO, steak knives in the "bring Beams home " deal.
Bianco. 21yo, taken a few picks before Byrnes.
Murphy 22yo, taken a couple of picks after Clavarino.
McCreery, 21 year old, taken the pick before Highmore.
Ash Johnson. Mid Season 2021 , SAFL pick.

I don't see an extraordinary amount of leg ups or early picks.
I see a lot of strategies and draft picks similar to what the Saints have had.
It does seem that the main difference, is when the Pies tried some of the same ideas ( usa rookie, trading with GWS for state level players ) it worked for them.

You put Moore and the two Daicos boys in our team and we compete in finals.

It isn't rocket surgery. Traded out their FRDP the year before for who? Probably another first 22 player.

Leg ups everywhere.

Some of it is the ability to sort through talent and better development too. Mason Cox was no better than Holmes but we never really gave him a go then delisted him. His tap work was excellent IMO and probably should have persisted. We managed to stuff the list management and got rid of all the rucks he was supposedly behind any way.

We don't seem good at knowing who the good and the bad ones are and persisting with high picks who aren't up to it and moving on talented players from alternative pathways.

Also the Pies pay to have good recruiting staff which means that they get better players in the draft. Same as Richmond they get good players in every draft. We find it a novelty when we draft a player who looks AFL standard these days. Owens and Windhager should be the norm not a special event. King was the last really good national draft pick before that. Battle and Gresham the best before that.

I don't think they are all academy though. Dragons are based out of Moorabin but I don't think we have any control over them. The academy kids are a smaller group or it used to be.
Academy (Next Gen) starts U13 - skills drills.

U14/15 Starts getting more serious, skills drills and games sense drills. From 80 odd kids, 24 selected to play inter league.

U16/19
Northern league out of Moorabbin players are selected to play sandy dragons.

Southern League players are selected to play for Dandy Stingrays.

The coaches are AFL trained and the club run PD sessions with the saints coaching staff to re-force the skills.
All the training drills undertaken by the academy are the same as what the seniors train but have been modified according to the age bracket.

They still have a foundation built on good drafting over a long period which makes everything easier because kids come into a solid system driven side and know how to slot in. Changing personnel all the time makes it hard to know each others games let alone seamlessly bring in kids.

Perhaps those Collingwood kids don't play as well at the saints because instead of being able to run around without having to carry a huge load they have to be key picks and wear a better opponent?

The system isn't going to be fair, we just have to make every post a winner and avoid making poor decisions because no-one is going to help us until we help ourselves.

It’s “Cue”
…and maybe you’ve forgotten those pressers last year when Ratts publicly called out the team for not giving him the ball. I loved it when he was doing his thing on the wing, but his defensive pressure was awful at times, maybe you’ve forgotten that. What about the second half of the season, when we weren’t travelling so well. There were times he deserved to be dropped, but wasn’t.

All I’m saying is if there are issues between Hill and some players it could well be due to actual or perceived favouritism.

Hill knows he has under achieved and is most probably just wants out which is disappointing knowing how we were craving for outside run and only showed it in glimpses.
Anyway I feel the only way he goes is if he is in some 3 way trade to enable us to pick up a player that will make us better.

I went to his first game - thought we had something super special!!!

Gettable....much like Clark and Hill, everyone is gettable, it's a business....people tend to forget that.

Happens at every club....until they get traded, it's not worth getting shirty over because chances are, there a little to no legs for it to run..View attachment 1506170

Carlton shut down that rumor. Came out pretty much straight away and dismissed it.

Why didn’t Saints do that with Clark, Hill, NWM and Long??

I have no problem with Hilly personally. He’s played some scintillating footy, just not often enough. We didn’t pay him the big bucks to play as a hbf however, and he wasn’t doing it on the wing early days.

Interesting too that he seems to make a habit of cutting and running mid contract as Stavro mentioned. If he leaves us it’ll be the third time.

Its was obvious the club had moved on from Hannebery and appeared to force him into retirement. I think he thinks he has finally got his body right? Perhaps the medical staff have no faith in his body holding up which is understandable.

I think it would be reasonable of the club to suggest to Hannebery to do a preseason and if you get through we will add you to the rookie list as a DFA? With game bonuses...
What worries me is why didn’t we offer him a coaching role? I’m sure we all saw him directing traffic on field. Players listened to him. He would be great on the bench giving direction to players as they are coming off.
