Is Nick Stevens from Geelong worth a look? Thought he played well in the VFL liked his attack on the ball and a decent mark for an undersized defender. What is the deal with Jarrod Brander thought he played well when given the chance is it off field issues, attitude find it strange.
The issue with Bowes I believe is that he knows that we only want the pick in the deal and given that he would want to go where he is more likely to be played that is probably why we aren't in the conversation. I'm sure we did our due diligence on it.

Pretty bloody uninspiring to think that we have only been linked with players who aren't even locks for our best 22. Hartigan, Cordy, Lachie Hunter...all depth at best. WTF are we doing with this massive chunk of excess salary cap space? Seems like the Bowes situation was absolutely tailor made for us - we could have comfortably paid him his ridiculous contract for the next two years and brought in pick 7.
That’s a really great take on our situation. Uninspiring is right.

Our 2nd half of the season killed any chance of anyone wanting to come to Stkilda

Maybe there's some magic behind the scenes, but imo more likely that we've decided the list is shot and that picking up more experienced players is a backwards step. So far this strategy looks a lot like a rebuild. We'll trade out a couple, hit the draft this year, be worse next year and hit the draft harder again then.

Kieran Strachan Crows back up ruckman could be handy.

He dominates SANFL and is pretty much raring to go. Plays well at AFL level when given the opportunity.
He’s rookie listed. So if we offer to put him on a senior list we should be able to get him for free pretty much
Why do we need a back up ruck , we have big Tom who has shown he is a handy back up

I heard the new forward coach is going to be Matthew Lloyd so everyone will be able to shut up about him helping Max kick - BTW I notice how that popped up when King kicked 5 behinds but no one mentioned anything when he went out the next week and kicked 5 goals.
Yeah i think they did
As there was only one or two set shots

St Kilda is happy to admit it went ‘all in’ to lure Jordan De Goey from Collingwood. But, after striking out, where do the Saints go now? Get the inside word here.

St Kilda needs more “guns of the competition” and wants to stockpile prized draft picks after narrowly missing out on the hottest free agent in Jordan De Goey.
The Saints were told at 9pm last Thursday night they had missed out on the Collingwood superstar, who announced on Friday he had signed a five-year deal to stay at the Pies.

They are searching for tall players in the trade period but do not expect to lose contracted midfielder Hunter Clark and are set to heavily invest in the draft.

List boss James Gallagher said the Saints were short on A-graders and the ongoing football review, led by ex-North Melbourne coach David Noble, was helping shape their strategy.

“We’ve got some emerging guns of the competition, we’ve got one or two that are there at the moment, but we need more,” Gallagher said on Monday.

“Hence the really strong interest in De Goey. Typically your gun midfielders, your champion and your star midfielders, come in the first four, five, six picks of the draft.

“So we need to find a way to bring one or two of them in over the next couple of years.”

The Saints hold picks No.9, 28 and 46 in this year’s draft. Last year they drafted Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Mitch Owens and Marcus Windhager in what appeared a solid haul.

They were “all in” on De Goey, which has opened up salary cap space.

“We certainly gave him plenty to think about, it was pretty close at the end of the day,” Gallagher said.

“For a player like that you need to be all-in. We were and we make no apologies about that, we thought he could have a significant impact for us on-field.

“We’d love to bring in two or three more kids at the pointy end of the draft to play with Naz (Wanganeen-Milera), Mitch and Marcus, plus our other young talent, for a number of years.”

Gallagher spoke to Clark, who is in Europe, last week and was confident he would stay despite interest from North Melbourne.

He said the Saints were “hoping to squeeze the absolute best out of Hunter in 2023 and beyond”.

Bradley Hill is also set to stay despite his inconsistent form, which Gallagher said several Saints had been guilty of.

“We need another tall we think. We’ve lost Paddy (Ryder) to retirement and Darragh Joyce as well,” he said.

“We’ve got some emerging talls there, but a bit of support at either end I think is pretty important for us.

“We’ve got a good group of talls that we’re really confident in, but we’re just a bit skinny I reckon.

“That’s one area I think we can improve.”

Ben Long will be traded to play as a defender for Gold Coast Suns while Gallagher confirmed the Saints wanted a senior figure to steer the football department.

Geoff Walsh has been strongly linked to that role.

“It’s a challenging period of time (with the ongoing review),” Gallagher said.

“We’re really asking questions about the program, the list and the team.

“But what it’s going to do when it draws to a close is we’ll be really aligned on exactly what we need, where we are and where we’re headed from here.”

Just reading that makes me think we might try and deal with someone like the Hawks to upgrade our pick (who we know are open to trading theirs) and be in the best position to get Cam Mackenzie

I think Gags will be looking at getting 3 Picks in the Top 30 for the draft, and then late pick/future pick trade for a backup talls or couple of no cost delisted FA's

Hopefully get pick Pick 35 from GCS for Ben Long, combine that with our Pick 46 and convince Brisbane that swapping them for Pick 15 would be a good deal all round.

Go to the Draft with 9, 15 & 28.

Back up talls to target - Cordy (FA), Hartigan (de- listed), Schache/Weiderman - cost? Will Gould/Ethan Phillips?

The issue with the Bowes situation is that HE has to want to play for US.

When you have the Bombers (huge crowds), Hawks (crowds + historical success) & Geelong (perpetual finalists) all in the mix, there's no chance of us winning him over.

Gags needs to get creative - pick 83 for Ben Long + $850K so they can pay off their debt to Bowes, he can then go to whichever club actually REALLY wants to have him on their list and GCS can give us Pick 7.

Because the thing of real value in the trade is Pick 7 not Jack Bowes.

This^ whatever the contract long is getting at gc we need to sign him to that than pay 80% of it and in return get the pick 7.

Dan Cherny reported the Hartigan interested was incorrect.

Brisbane would be losing points doing that trade

Plus they need if for Dunkley

Maybe we can offer GC a future pick along with Long to get their earlier 2nd

Be nice to get another top 20 pick though

Yes and yes! Say the Cats get Bowes for $250k a season, a bargain. They might send pick 19 or whatever to the Sun's. Then Long goes to the Sun's plus we take on the other $600k a season, for pick 7. Very rough with the picks and salary but you get the idea.

Makes sense but unfortunately it can't quite work, money can't change hands as part of an AFL trade (except implicitly by paying a departing player's wages), and Longy won't be on anywhere near enough to offset the Bowes contract.
