We do need to improve the list, but we might not think what will be pick 8 is worth giving someone the equivalent of Brad Crouch’s contract to play at Sandy.

Or Bowes has said he isn’t interested so we are taking the De Goey money and the time it would take chasing Bowes elsewhere.
That may well be what they are thinking, but as I've said I disagree with it

Ben Long was in our best 22 imo.
Ratten had him behind Higgins and butler as a small forward, and behind a few as a half back.
But he was still established as within the best 23 at least being sub when he wasn’t 22.
The suns obviously see him in their 22.

Bowes was playing 2s.

Those coveting Bowes:
Classic case of greener grass on the other side of the fence.

ALL clubs have the ability to fit it into the cap because all clubs have the ability to vary the contract and wash the overhang over multiple years.
BUT if they did that then Bowes would have a list spot for that extension.
I suspect cap space is not the issue, it might very well be Bowes.
Possibly that is what they are thinking?

Going off our track records, Geelong have made better decisions than us over the last so many years so for now I'd be backing them in

Suspect that we haven't been able to convince Bowes that we want him more than we want pick 7 so we are out of the race. Which is understandable because I think if Bowes was on the open market with a reasonable salary say $400K and no attachment of pick 7 none of us would be particularly interested. He is a GOP fringe best 22 and not a particular need for us.

Shame because deals like this aren't going to be around for long the Salary Cap is going to go up with the new rights deal solving most clubs Cap issues at least in the short to medium term. I suspect that is part of the basis for clubs committing so many 7 year deals they are expecting that the back end 4 or 5 years of those deals are going to be really good value.

Can't see too many other paths to landing another first round pick.

Sick of st kilda not developing a proper KPP back man. Getting old aged backman every year to fill the gap hasn’t worked.

nathan brown
Logan Austin
Sam rowe
James Frawley
Johnathon marsh ( I guess)

And really one has been okay (nathan brown)
Yeah don’t think brown should be lumped in with the others. He was able to be one of our best and reliable defenders until he retired due to the hub season. Wasn’t injury plagued or sitting in the twos

Doesn't make sense to compare best 22s from different clubs which have different players, and also Long and Bowes are different players.

Gold Coast also had Wright and Brodie playing in the VFL.

They seem to make decisions about moving players on early and not playing them.

The year prior, before injury mid year Bowes was one of their better players

I'd take him ahead of Long any day of the week

The issue with the Bowes situation is that HE has to want to play for US.

When you have the Bombers (huge crowds), Hawks (crowds + historical success) & Geelong (perpetual finalists) all in the mix, there's no chance of us winning him over.
Has anyone impressed upon him the benefits of our club such as the Nespresso machine in the lobby and the opportunity to do an unpaid internship as our new receptionist?

Target Walsh in a couple years. Hopefully with Carlton paying some of his salary. He’d be the ultimate fit for our midfield
We need to stop targeting players and start drafting them because they never come. That’s why I’m still staggered that we’re not trying harder for pick 7, just proves to me again that we have a very ordinary list management team. Chances like this don’t come up very often.

Cordy is 26 and will cost nothing as a back-up for Howard which we desperately need.

It's a good option for what we need knowing that no one who you instantly look at and think highly of is going to move somewhere to be a back-up.
Whilst I agree with the logic an appointment like that is a strong precursor for a rebuild in the next year. It's real bottom of the barrel stuff..
