If we sign Mitchell then we must be a fair chance to sneak into the top 8. I’m assuming we flick a late pick or the long compo to make the trade. So rather than try to get another 1st rounder by trading out a talented young guy when we’re already short of talent we should trade next years 1st.

People always run with this next years draft line, Imo this years has plenty of talent certainly enough to match pick 10 or worse in next years so imo it makes sense to bring that pick forward. We get another kid in who can be blooded and developed like owens was last year and loose nothing.

Yeah so my argument would be that delisted free agents are mostly a known quantity. Like we know that Hartigan is what he is.

Whereas if we pick some random dude with pick 60, we might get Arryn Siposs or Justin Sweeney, but also we might get Sam Fisher or Jimmy Gwilt.

Obviously impossible to tell but I reckon history has shown that we're better off taking a few more punts rather than getting guys we already know aren't really good enough.
I think he's asking how do you fill 7 spots if you only have 4 draft picks, are you saying you trade to split them rather than looking at DFA's?

Exactly,so the DFA players come onto our list short term until the our required needs are filled.
Some of the review we had was about positional needs, which may not be filled in one season hence our DFA situation.
I don't see a problem with Weideman,Schache,Dow etc short term,as long as our list management get it right.in the coming few drafts

Are we actually keen on Paddy Dow? or has it just stemmed from that super mega trade that was released?

Don't really understand the hate on Cordy,
25yr old played forward, back and in the ruck in there premiership year. 100 game premiership player

Plus we need to replace Grady’s leadership and experience

Nah you always have more picks, the afl allocates as many as you need to fill all your empty list spots on the day of the draft, just that no one talks about the late picks really

We can take as many picks as we need in the National Draft.

If we delist Lienert and Bytel and trade Long, we will have 8 open spots. If we want we can take 8 picks, we would be allocated 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th round picks.

They just aren't talked about because after the 3rd round, picks have no value whatsoever.

We have been doing this for a few years now need to start developing our own

We said the same thing about McKernan and a few others
Fair.

But not having a readymade KPD to fill in the hole if Dougal cops a niggle would be incompetence. Cooper Sharman cannot fill that hole either.

Apart from the Essendon news today's reading has been horrific and darkly depressing

I doubt this trade thread could plumb to a lower depth

There is tomorrow I guess

I suspect tomorrow a couple of lads will have to follow through on their, uh, backside related promises when Zordy signs…

That's not how it works. You have as many picks as you have spare spots on your list. If we had 20 spare list spots we could have 20 draft picks.
So the alternative would be to keep taking players when every other club has stopped drafting in a draft that is not considered deep...

Most are saying that outside the top 30 the draft is considered very weak.
