My biggest takeaway is that the criticisms of Silvagni for poor disposal and not taking marks is a little unfair. We know he doesn't do much in the ruck but he is ahead in many categories so does that make up for what he lacks in the ruck?
I think a lot of these stats mean SFA in terms of comparing the impact they have had on the team, its not completely unflawed but would be interested in comparing each supercoach/afl ranking for each game and then compare it against the equivalent ruck from our opponent. Coaches votes are also a good measure, how many times have our 3 achieved coaches votes in 2023 and then how many times has the oppo ruckmen voted?

Binns - in the 22
Cincotta - Sub
Cuningham - in the 22
Curnow - VFL 5eva
Dow - in the 22
Fogarty - VFL
Kennedy - in the 22
Young - VFL

So preferred Bench of Binns, Cuningham, Dow, Kennedy - Sub: Cincotta

More likely if I'm trying to predict Voss' mind: Bench of Kennedy, Ed, Young, Cincotta - Sub: Dow

Then again, we're talking about the fringe/bench of a team that has lost 7 of its last 8, with the only win against WCE. I'm not sure why I still have interest each week!

I still don't get why Harry can't just spend a few minutes each quarter in the ruck.

The idea that you need both Charlie & Harry forward at all times to provide two big targets is crap. Melb & Coll don't have a big forward target as obvious as either of those guys and it doesn't hold them back, instead all their forwards are targets

We weren't losing as badly in the Centre Clearances last year so JSOS filling in the ruck wasn't exposed as badly as it has been this year. Teams have worked out to just quickly get the ball to the outside and chances are a team mate will beat the slow Carlton midfielders to the ball. It's just not working this year

JSOS looked so banged up running around last week from competing with big rucks. Stops him from doing the things he can do.

The pies game the focus was on pressure and then JSOS was dropped after having the team high tackles. Not really the right message to the group and a source of frustration for JSOS..

I assume because he'd break.

Their squad:
FB: Ballard, S.Collins, Jeffrey
HB: Ben Long, Macpherson, Powell
C: Fiorini, D.Swallow, Ainsworth
HF: Rosas, Holman, Lukosius
FF: Berry, Ben King, Casboult
FOL: Witts, Rowell, Anderson
IC (Fom): Mac Andrew, Atkins, Davies, Sam Day, Ellis, Humphrey, Moyle, Alex Sexton

I can see Young remaining, just because he is tall.

I also feel at some stage the wheel will turn and wins will come. Not sure if it's this game. But if Binns, Cuningham, and Kennedy are in, with Doch as a defender and Kennedy some time forward, I'd like to think of a positive result for us.

However, below are observations from a GC Poster (not mine). Rather telling.

Considering tonights performance from Carlton
  • Midfield pressure non-existent
  • Cripps playing on a broken ankle (probably)
  • Walsh and Cerra get 30+ but 0 hurt factor
  • Acres has 0 killer passes in the forward 50
  • McKay & Curnow will get their shots
  • No other forward can kick a footy
  • Tag Saad and we'll be fine
  • Docherty goes ok but plays all thirds of the ground so no impact
How to beat Carlton
  • Win Contested football (Ranked #1) Carlton (Ranked #11)
  • Win Clearances (Ranked #2) Carlton (Ranked #15)
  • Witts v De Koning (Ranked #3) Carlton (Ranked #9)
  • Tackles inside 50 (Ranked #7) Carlton (Ranked #17)
  • Goal Accuracy (Ranked #11) Carlton (Ranked #18)
  • Disposals (Ranked #18) Carlton (Ranked #4)

Gameplan later/in another thread, for now, just this game

As per preseason, I would shuffle some players

Gov Weitering Newman
Doc Young Saad

Pitto Cerra Walsh
Acres Cripps Cotts

Boyd Harry Martin
Owies Charlie TDK

Kemp, Cuners, Cincotta, Kennedy

Boyd - Better user, benefits our scoring/inside 50s

Doc - To the backline again, but needs to stop blazing

Kemp - Don't want him in the side as a defender, too loose and costly, just doesn't have the IQ when to hold, peel or handover. But, strong hands and would be dangerous forward.

Cincotta - Really lucky to retain a spot, lost Merrett early in the 3rd and it really hurt us

Binns unlucky, toss up between he and Cotts

Welcome back.

Gold Coast by 19 points.
Witts will give rowell anderson and co first use.
They have a serious fwd line.
Frankly, GC are a better side on paper which reflects on the holes in the Carlton list

Just on the ruck stats, what it doesn’t take into account is the opponent, more specifically if they’re the #1 or relief ruck.

Jack, and Tom to a lesser degree as he’s played a few as the primary ruck with Jack in support, have their numbers pumped up a little as they’re usually not competing against the #1 ruck, while Pitto is rarely facing the backup.

Jack can do ok post-hitout if it hits the deck and it’s all a bit of a mess as he can follow up as a quasi-mid. But we also saw what happened against Collingwood when that’s not the case and the ball exits the centre square fast, resulting in a barrage of repeated goals.

As mentioned by someone else, it’d be great to see a stat on ‘hitouts to advantage conceded’ or similar, to get a better idea of how much they thwart an opponent.

Silvagni Height 1.91

Last Month Ruckmen Height
Draper 2.05
Gawn 2.08
McAndrew 2.1
Cox 2.11

Silvagni's participation in ruck work over the last couple of years is evidently a direct result of our deficiencies in list management.
194 according to the Carlton website. Same as Charlie.

Also those heights probably reduce a little when you compare the opposition relief rucks? Likely still taller than Jack, but none the less.
