Crippa will want to play if we leave blokes out and we get belted by GWS it’s just giving them a lot of confidence if we play them following game
Don’t give a sucker an even break
give him a comma though.....

In the last 40 years this has happened 6 times in the VFL/AFL. This is going back to 1983 when we lost to Essendon both times.
4 times the same side has won the next week (ignoring bye).

The only 2 times the result was reversed were 2001 Ess v Rich and 2015 Rich v North.

Essendon were a way better side than Richmond in 2001 and just took the piss in the round 22 game. They then belted the Tigers by 70 points in the qualifying final. Richmond were a side without belief in 2015. They beat North easily in the round 23 game, before collapsing in the second half of the elimination final.

History agrees with you - don't mess with things unless you are supremely confident you are the better side. IF we know we are going to play them again, we are not in a position to flirt with our form.
And wasn’t 2015 the year that Brad Scott rested half his team because they couldn’t finish any lower with the loss and that was what prompted the afl to put in place the pre finals bye for all to rest players?

Boyd would be a handy inclusion for Greene.IF not, I would like Jed Lamb to debut.

Yep. Cunnington, Dal Santo, Goldstein, Swallow, Higgins, Waite all didn't play, amongst others. Boomer Harvey was sub.

Yeah he did it first but North couldn’t go higher or lower than 7/8th in 2015 from memory and they rested heaps also. Came out and knocked over Tigers who finished 5th as the Roos were fresh. Was a lot of media hysteria after this and this was the last straw that pressured the afl into the post season bye. This is what led to assisting the Dogs flag the next year as too many breaks seems to assist teams 5-8th as it seems to halt the momentum of the top 4 teams who win their qualifying finals first up and 2016 was the first year of that. Pretty sure since then more teams have made the GF % wise from 5-8th than in previous years under final 8 system.

With our shrinking injury list and finals approaching, game preview threads in particular are going to offer a wide variety of opinions. Whether they're balanced is just one person's perspective, and all should be encouraged.

I don't see anyone discouraging opinions on selection, most would be up for debate to gain better understanding

I can understand and also agree that Cripps should be rested considering he is carrying a rib injury

What I don't understand is why someone like Doc should be rested. He suffered a cork prior to GC but was still selected in the side and played a full game

Also don't understand why Kennedy should be used as a sub this week. Surely a full game to regain or ascertain touch would be beneficial to the side leading into finals

Wondering who else will be called out for a rest first week of finals to squeeze in players

Glad Voss and co are making these decisions
Thought we sacked Voss? Can't coach? Did I get that wrong?

Resting players in footy is not like resting your car knowing it will start up the following week and function the same. Why would we want to flirt with form and the psychological implications of a loss.

Play the best 23 Available and bury these guys. We have come so far in regards to turning our season around, lets just keep winning!

PLAY NICK GRAHAM MICK FFS ....

Sorry had 2015 nightmare flashbacks. Yet it still feels bitterly like it happened yesterday

All these years of us being down the bottom end of the ladder has made somewhat bitter and cranky as a supporter

Feels like it's going to be a real party/festive atmosphere at the game on Sunday though. Wouldn't miss it for the world !

If you watch games Doc has been wearing bandage on calf for weeks

Pretty sure the boys will be able to find an extra 10% to get up and be at their best for finals. Rest after the job is done and delay the preseason.

Job isn't done yet. I'm growing more confident we won't rest players. Only reason a Crippa or Doc will miss is if they're injured.

I think we smash GWS this week. Absolutely no resting unless a player is recovering from an injury. Resting up players will only show our opposition we're tired.

There's a famous game I remember Vossy played in and I'm sure he'll have this in the back of his mind always. Hawks up by 45 points at 3/4 time versus the Bears in '95 at the GABBA. Hawks at the break go and stand in their huddle in the shade of the GABBA stands, it being a rather warm day. Coach of Bears at the time and Blues legend, Wallsy, points to the Hawks team from the Bears' huddle and says "we've got them! They're tired, look at them! We can win this!". Vossy kicks the first goal of a 9.7 last quarter blitz and Bears, with belief they are fitter, overrun the Hawks and win the match.

Lesson: No flirting with winning form. No showing the opposition we 'need' a rest. This just shows a weakness. Pick fit players, win the game, play to the final siren and rest after that. Muscles always feel less tired when you win anyway 💪😂

Essendon played dead in that final round of 2001 to avoid playing us in the first final as we had already beaten them twice that year.

Richmond winning that game cost us 4th spot and the opportunity to move straight into a preliminary by beating Essendon again.

Was so happy when Brisbane beat them in the GF. On a side note, we had beaten Brisbane by 74 points earlier in that year too.

Another year ruined by injury…

Essendon deliberately lost that game to avoid playing us as we had beaten them twice during the season.

We were definitely heavily reliant on a couple of our best players back then. I have more faith in this group, the players just get the job done, even without the best players out injured at times. This group is going to be as strong as the '95 group IMO, they are only just getting started.

Think we will rest Cripps and Doc if finals are completely locked in. The we'll play our strongest team coming out of the club is just that.. our strongest/fittest available team and an injured/sore Cripps/Doc is not classified as fit. A few mind games is all.

In the end what happens, happens. We can't dictate the future and events, much like now we can't change conceding that last score against Richmond round 1, dropping the lead against the Dogs, etc. If we bow out of finals and don't win the thing then hopefully that injects the fire in the belly to fuel them for a full assault next year much like 93/94 had on the 95 team.

I don't think Doc would lose any match fitness from being managed or Cripps, due to rib damage, but it does give all of the other midfield options 1 more
full game to gell.
Gives us more cover if we go deep into finals, and yes, play Kennedy in the 22 if he's good to go, but sub if he's not 100%.

Don't think any player would lose match fitness being managed for one game, that could apply to pretty much every player.

And I see Doc playing between the arcs, so he is part of the midfield in that case

If Kennedy isn't good to go, he shouldn't play, otherwise I think he should be starting 22 as a mid
