I agree with most of what you’re saying. I just don’t think we’re as far away from the mark as you’re making out.

I think all we lack is a Butters or Rozee to be honest.
Rozee Butters Duursma are 3 years ahead of Pou Owens and Windhager
Agree with you we aren’t that far away

That's exactly why you can't judge a performance purely on stats. We may have woj more clearances but Port looked much better moving the footy from clearance.

We usually do pretty well with contested and clearance numbers but we don't have a lot.of talent in there and lack pace and polish.

You also can't judge who has the better midfield off just one game. Port look a fair way ahead of us with their midfield.
I'd say the way we move from clearance has improved this year, but still has a way to go.we need to break the old habits we have picked up. We also are too 1 paced so if we have Steele Crouch and Clark in there for instance and a team gets a break from clearance we're miles off it.

I'm with CF that I don't think our midfield is that bad, but we need to make sure the mix is right - can't have all slow or flat footed players in there at the same time. We need to break habits of panicking and bombing and work it out more.

Definitely think Owens should be getting rotated thru, not as a relief ruck. Windy should be as well when he gets his chance

He has played Owens Pou NWM every game

We are 5th on the ladder
Caminiti and Byrnes as well. Pretty ignorant to say he hasn't played young players.
All he did in the last 3 years at Freo was to play youngsters.

Last night's performance by Port just highlighted how far our midfield is off the contending sides.

Need to start introducing more kids through there and hope like hell we can find a Rozzee, Butters and JHF.
Besides winhager there isn't any more kids. Have to wait until late in the season for hotton. Could add Windhager

I must have a go at Lyons here. If you remember youngsters found it very hard to get a game ;look how Armo and Jack Stevens were treated. Hee isnt known for his ability to handle young players. Afteer Windys game last weekend Lyon needs to explaind why Windy isnt playing this week.

In the VFL report last week Batch talked about Windy working on his defensive workrate. That’s pretty important for Lyon so makes sense if he’s trying to get him working harder back.

You are right but you forgot JHF 19yo, Drew 24yo, Wines 28yo and Boak 34yo.

Its projecting like Owens, Windhager & Phillipou will progress quickly, but by the time they are playing at that level of Butters etc, Crouch 30yo & Ross 30yo will be nearing the end. Steele is 27yo and will be around for another 5-6 years. Im still not convinced Hunter Clark 24yo with his distinct lack of leg speed has a long term future as a midfielder. He has plenty of potential but he still has the body and running capacitiies of an 18yo.

There is a chance we are not that far off seriously challenging but do we need to find midfielders in the Noah Anderson 22yo and Caleb Serong 22yo esq to take the next step? Perhaps we have the required growth already on the list, they just need games, only the club would know? What we do know at present IMO our midfield is struggling.

Obviously there are other list needs, lets say we get Tom De Koning 23yo for an early 2nd round pick and possibly Ben McKay 25yo as a free agent. Mowman has mentioned we are interested in Miles Bergman 21yo, but Port would want a 1st round pick for him. Bergman is a good player but is he a high list priority given our needs? Perhaps the club see him as a possible Wood/Hill replacement of the future?

If we were to make those deals this year that would mean we are basically trading out of this years draft - which has never proven to work. Its looking like we might get another decent NGA player slide through - Josh Docking who is a wingman. Regardless on where we finish I think we still need to maintain our 1st round pick or find a way to hold an early pick. Recent history has highlighted we need to keep drafting talented youngsters each and every year - they are our future.

We haven't really though

Phillipou was getting a taste early and then went a month without a centre bounce appearance, Owens only goes in there when he's rucking and Windhager barely end in there when he was playing and is playing VFL. Who else is there?

Hopefully we see it more as the year goes on. It would be nice to have an idea on what they can offer in there

Port were pushing for a flag when Rozzee/Butters came in, but JHF is only a 2nd year player

Just had a look and Phillipou had 6% CBA on the weekend. Bytel 16% , Owens 19%. Which means we were trying to feed them in.

I always hoped Gresham could fill that need but he has been underwhelming this year.

Gresham still has a lot of scope for improvement left in him. Last year he was leading a lot of our midfield stats before injury. Was tracking nearly identical to DeGoey before he went down.

I think getting guys like him firing again and the potential for guys like Billings to get back to their best gives us two very high level players already there. We need to keep pumping games into ids at the same time and draft well. We aren't that far off the best sides but 5% is all you need to be just off the peloton.

Which is why I was against trading in Hill and others 3 or 4 years ago because we would have been that far ahed now.Topped up for instant impact that was a misread of the list.

I’d kill to have ONE of what they have three of. They’re setup for a decade in the most important area of the ground. If they’re happy to have Clark rotate between HB-mid Hodge style that’s fine but we need to find some young potential full timers.
