IMO it depends a lot on what happens tomorrow. I expect Hawkins and probably Cameron to tear us up in the absence of Howard, which will make it clear that we can't get rid of him without direct replacement. Even if we're building for the future we can't afford to have a glaring weakness against big key forwards.

But if Cordy+Wilkie+Battle can do a job between them on the most dangerous key forward duo in the comp, then it feels like Howard becomes more dispensable in the short-term. Will be interesting to see how that goes.

We obviously want to shed some cap space and look like moving on some of those overly generous contracts. I guess that means that they are looking for upgrades potentially?

Based on this year, which “senior” players are rumoured to be moved on are indispensable to us?

Membrey has barely played and been poor when he has. He could very well be worth more to another club then to us on the basis we have found one in caminiti.

Clark? Been over taken by a few and sitting very much on the periphery

Billings? Well over taken. 28 today. There isn’t a player I’m dropping in Saturday nights 22 for him.

Gresham… had all the opportunities in the world in a decent side this year to show us how good he is and why he should be worth a big contract for us. He is frustrating and stands out like dogs balls most weeks as someone who can’t lift with the side this season.

Howard. Important because of position. Not because of talent. Cordy & a stop gap could very well spell the end of him at the saints whilst we develop other options.

That’s the 5 I mentioned that Twomey has backed up.

What’s the point in holding all of them if we have players going past them and If you have the opportunity to cash in and bring in talent that sits in the right demographic of where we want to be?

We had a new coach bounce and will have to navigate injury and form from kids next season. It's huge risk culling hard. Could easily send us bottom 4 for a few years if we get it wrong. We have an ordinary list as it is, throwing away too much could get ugly if we can't bring in some ready mades.

Not true!!!, on Saints profile list anyways. He's more like Owens size. Owens 191cm-91kg, Coffield 191cm-90kg, +2kgs from his previous season. Just for comparison, Phillipou is 190,88kg.
Jack Hayes is 194cm-94kgs, +2 kgs from his previous season
If you’d been to trading you would’ve seen Hayes & Coffield running together..very similar build.
The saints player stats are never up to date anyway!

There's been a lot of assumptions on here with one major strategy that has been overlooked. If we are indeed intending a cull of the playing list to rid ourselves of those that RTB has deemed not good enough, then there is nothing that stops us from investing in future draft picks as well and securing a stronger position for the 2024 draft!

I have no idea if the 2024 draft is currently rated highly or poorly, but if we are improving how we operate as a club, surely we consider this in our long-term strategic list planning??

I don't think we have time to sit back and wait a year to start bringing kids in. That was the Clark/Coffield situation and it just delayed stuffing our pick up.

Was that the first round of the year? He's had a great season. My Blues family members all love him and laugh at how cheap they got him. He seemed to get them on side very early and they are still fans. Makes me want to spew hearing them call him "Blakey" and "Bakers" and s*t. ****** cringe.

Just looked at his stats, looks like his best form started in our first game in round 6 with 36 and backed it up the next with 34 and a goal. He looks to have had a very even season but he's had some match winning moments in the last month and half.
He was an unnecessary pawn in the Brad Hill deal..really should still be a saints player!

I mean isn't that was Ross has been signalling more of this year?

We want picks and talent to go with Max, Windy, Owens etc.

If we cut hard and take a dip next year and get even better picks, isn't that short term pain for a long term gain

I'd have no issues with Coff getting 2 years.

It's not like he's a 25+ bloke who's injury prone.

He will be next year though.

Not sure. Haven't heard Lyon saying that we are planning to go backwards. All the talk I've heard is that this season is our weird explorative year where we do acid and sleep with a goat and next year the serious climb starts.

I would be shocked if a club offered Coffield an outright 2 year deal - especially if he doesn’t string together some good AFL games this season - which looks highly unlikely right now.

It’s a cut throat industry. You can’t keep holding players because of perceived talent. They need to get on the park and show it.

Which unfortunately Coffield hasn’t been able to and I’m huge fan of him. But a 1 year deal would seem more then fair
1 yr with a games trigger for a 2nd year, seems more than a responsible list management decision.

Coffield looked noticeably bigger at the start of each season. Has a bit of a Battle slim hips and big shoulders build. Hopefully not the reason his knees are struggling. Staying smaller and more mobile might be preferable unless he's playing as an intercepting third tall. His best bet is to turn into a running half back flanker.

The list as is wont win a flag.

I’ve seen enough in the “kids”. To back in a trim and bring in more.

I’ve seen enough success out of stocker to be happy to see what we can bring in from the scrap heap.

There will be more than enough money to be buyers at this years trade table.

The likes of Grundy and Hunter went dirt cheap. Treloar the year before etc.

Let’s see what can be shaken loose

My biggest concern with culling the list hard this year is the quality of this years draft crop. I would go as far a suggesting there were players taken in last years in the 20-30 range that would be top 15 this year. So unless we are able to work our way into the top 10 at the draft I dont see the benefit? I get the impression for the club to be so ready to move on so many mid tier players, they have a deal in the brewing like trading in GCS pick # 4 or similiar.

We definitely need quality/elite midfielders so if we can trade up to pick #4 and grab a targetted player eg McKercher or Sanders then take another player at pick #13 it would be a win.

Its only speculation isn't it?

Maybe a lot of players available from our list, but that might mean if one is taken, the others are off the table.

Mason Wood is only 29. For some reason I thought he was 31.
I am very happy to hear that. Possibly my favourite player on our list from another club.
I love these stories. Delisted at 26, picked up as depth, found his spot on the wing and has played some fantastic games, reminds me of the Blake with a huge tank, but a bit more skill.
Every team needs a Mason Wood.

I'd even give 13 and something else to move up to the GSC pick.

you are absolutely spot on and its already happened. check out the time on ground... anyone wanna pick out the first year player vs the 6th year player... the arrow indicates they played as a sub or were subbed out:

ones got the tank to potentially move into the midfield. the other doesn't and never will unless something drastically changes.

Surely the end of last year was the turning point then? Within an inch of being traded, but kept largely against his own will to the last year of his contract... if that doesn't motivate you to smash pre-season and ignite your career then I don't know what will. Except for all intents and purposes he looks, at least athletically, the same player as what he was last year.

It's a shame, because he has more talent in his little finger than someone like Mason Wood. Except Mason does everything humanly possible to get the best out of himself.

Not to mention mentors the youth, probably a big reason for Nas resigning.

As for his place in the team moving forward, I'm not wedded to any player anymore. I'm sick of waiting so I don't particularly care who stays or goes if it ultimately makes us better.
That’s pretty much my attitude. I’ve barracked for the Saints for over 50 years. Players come and go but the club will always be there. The last player I was disappointed at losing was David Grant, and that was 30 years ago.

I'm with you on that. We have to do something but something doesn't mean something stupid. In the past this would be a 5 year set back and lesson in how to decimate your own list for little gain.
