bird_man lets also talk about Paton.

I like Paton. I’d prefer to keep
Him. But again, he is also limited as a footballer and I’m not sure what his strength is anymore. Does a lot of things okay and nothing brilliantly at AFL level.

Personally I’d give Coffield a 1 year deal.

There's been a lot of assumptions on here with one major strategy that has been overlooked. If we are indeed intending a cull of the playing list to rid ourselves of those that RTB has deemed not good enough, then there is nothing that stops us from investing in future draft picks as well and securing a stronger position for the 2024 draft!

I have no idea if the 2024 draft is currently rated highly or poorly, but if we are improving how we operate as a club, surely we consider this in our long-term strategic list planning??

Stocker probably would be the one
Based on this years form it’s hard to say there is anyone on our list who plays the role of stocker that you would drop him for.

We would need to fill the vacancies they create. Again that’s if we trade out any or all of them

Based on this year, which “senior” players are rumoured to be moved on are indispensable to us?

Membrey has barely played and been poor when he has. He could very well be worth more to another club then to us on the basis we have found one in caminiti.

Clark? Been over taken by a few and sitting very much on the periphery

Billings? Well over taken. 28 today. There isn’t a player I’m dropping in Saturday nights 22 for him.

Gresham… had all the opportunities in the world in a decent side this year to show us how good he is and why he should be worth a big contract for us. He is frustrating and stands out like dogs balls most weeks as someone who can’t lift with the side this season.

Howard. Important because of position. Not because of talent. Cordy & a stop gap could very well spell the end of him at the saints whilst we develop other options.

That’s the 5 I mentioned that Twomey has backed up.

What’s the point in holding all of them if we have players going past them and If you have the opportunity to cash in and bring in talent that sits in the right demographic of where we want to be?
None of them hold much value though, that is the issue.

I’ve got no issue with turning over the list, but if the goal is to get first round picks than the plan is flawed in my opinion.

No doubt a few of those players need to moved on to replenish the list but we need to be realistic about their value and also need to be wary that if all of them go it’s going to put a massive hole in our already average depth.

There are already half a dozen on the list that need to be replaced before we look at trading the players you have mentioned above.

Yeah but at what speed was old mate moving. He also only averaged 17 disps a game.

He's got some freakish talents with some of the ways he can manufacture a kick in traffic but he's a witches hat on defence and has hardly improved in the last 3-4 years.

Theres no room for him in the back half and theres others ahead of him in the middle.

He's just been a dud pick tbh

I think he’s handy depth at the moment but don’t see any issue with moving him on. Unfortunately he’s going to get us next to nothing in a trade though.

Coffield I’d be trying to keep for sure. He’s another that just would get us very little. We’ve put in the work to get him fit again, it would be hard to watch him reach his potential at another club whilst we get a nothing pick for him.

aged well. From sub to dropped
I posted it after the teams were announced lmao.

Regardless, he's played 16 games this year - the most in any year of his career.

Aged well...you bet it has :)

Who are you dropping from our current 22 for Coffield?

Battle - no
Wilkie - no
Sharman - no
Cordy - no
Coff isn't a KPD so I'm not considering any of those blokes.

If anything I'm moving Sincas into the midfield rotation & losing a fringe mid/flanker type.

And I highly doubt they will be traded to say we have traded either.

but like every year. There are clubs who will look at Membrey and Howard, who think they could help turn them into a contender or increase their window.

There are clubs who would look at Billings and think he fills a need.

Clubs will look at Clark and lick their lips at the thought of filling his potential

There will be clubs who don’t rate this draft and want to trade out. Clubs who rate this draft and trade in.

IMO it depends a lot on what happens tomorrow. I expect Hawkins and probably Cameron to tear us up in the absence of Howard, which will make it clear that we can't get rid of him without direct replacement. Even if we're building for the future we can't afford to have a glaring weakness against big key forwards.

But if Cordy+Wilkie+Battle can do a job between them on the most dangerous key forward duo in the comp, then it feels like Howard becomes more dispensable in the short-term. Will be interesting to see how that goes.
I agree but I think a lot of it will depend on the midfield. If we lose clearances it won't matter who is down there.

It could still be a case of him going from Sub to Sub so your post it still a TBC in terms of aging badly or very accurately
Agree but I'm just highlighting the fact that people have NFI when it comes to evaluating players lol. Clearly he is doing something right to play so much this year.

And still out of contract with 2 games left after reports of being near a new deal 3 months ago

Have you not played in sucessful teams? Playing in sides that are competitive and winning finals lifts you to another level and gets you playing at a much higher level than if the team is getting flogged every second week. Football is a team game and that internal competitiveness is where the best development occurs - not as individuals.
Its belief, isn't it? Its knowing that you and your teammates can do stuff that works that motivates everyone to try other things to see how well they work too. Confidence, lack of fear, willingness to work at getting better - its all highly infectious.

Agree, we would need to fill list spots, but as part of a longer-term strategy, it's entirely possible they trade a couple of second round picks this year to GCS for a first next year and third this year, or similar. then pick up a late pick/rookie/pre-season pick this year to fill a list spot short term.

I'm just saying people have mentioned the likes of GCS potentially looking to move picks into next year as part of their strategy, but rarely seem to think of us doing the same. If we are going to have something of a mini list clean-out, future picks may well be part of the jigsaw.

100% there will be clubs that look at all those players. I’m not suggesting their won’t be.

What I am suggesting is that they won’t be paying massive overs to get them. Just like I said no club would be giving up a top 10 pick for Clark last year.

Yeah it's been so refreshing watching him play in the middle and rack up a massive 18 touches a game. What a weapon

No idea why he has played 16 games then. Are we just gifting games to players? That wouldn't be much like a Ross coached side would it? Lmao

So true George. As a former top 10 pick now heading into his prime years, I've got no doubt that we're going to sign him on a lucrative long term contract that will ensure such a talented player will stay with us and help shape our future moving forward.

Despite getting dropped/being named sub multiple times this year in a team who is openly in the market for more mids.

No doubt at all that we will be rushing for his signature.

So is Mason Wood who's played 19 games
Josh Gabelich -

STARRING SAINT TO HIT TRIGGER

ST KILDA has a backlog of list management decisions to make in the second half of 2023, but Mason Wood won't be one of them.

The 29-year-old is about to hit a trigger that will secure him another year at Moorabbin.

Wood signed a one-year extension last October with a games clause that will see him remain at RSEA Park for a fourth season.
