You know how the board runs at trade time. We all talk up how brilliant we are at trade time and every year * it up and stand still. Like a gambling addict that just needs another $100 to bet their way out of their massive debt. We are meant to be building a list not moving a lot of s**t around for the sake of it.
IMO we should cancel the season and just focus on trades, we are the undisputed champions of that.*

* That was sarcasm for all you slow folk out here. If you need it spelt out please feel free to PM me.

13 in a s**t draft is unlikely to reap a player as good as Gresham and probably takes 5 years to work out. Guys like Sinclair will be finishing up by the time these kids come on. I reckon we are having a bet each way between full rebuild and playing for now and not really clear on a path.

We'll need to import a bunch of guys Gresham's age and will cost more than pick 13 if we want to find good ones if we aren't looking at another rebuild.

Yeah that 5 years we waited for Nas & Mitchy to start to contribute was a bastard.

Lets not forget that Gresh was pick 15 in a pretty ordinary draft himself.

I love Gresh but let’s not forget it is he who wants to play for a big club with more games at the G. Its not like he’s in our top 10 most important players presently either.

We’re not pushing him out the door although I suspect that’s the line you’ll run with for the next however many years.

This potential move is what Ross has been talking about all season… go to the draft, keep bringing in talented kids to build around the core of kids we already have.

It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

Shiel won’t be depth he’ll walk into our midfield.

Only played 12 games this year. That's a bit of a worry.

I remember him getting a plumb external job when he moved to Essendon. Think it was with a property development company in the west of Melbourne.

They don't need the salary relief though. That's the key point in this. No way we end up with 13 in this deal.

I guess if you think of it this way - we do this deal and get Shiel + 27 for Gresham.

Would we rather that than 19 on it's own (band 2) or keeping Gresham (band 3)?
They will need the salary if they are getting McKay in on a long contract with big bucks.

That would make sense if we needed cap relief, but we're not. In fact we're pretty keen to see the "buy cap space" agreement go through so we can essentially buy a first round pick from someone who needs it.

Our current offer is apparently about band 2 money. You'd get pick 19. If you match you would be getting pick 27 instead. We probably only use 3-4 picks in the draft anyway so trading Shiel for a pick we probably don't use for cap relief that we don't need doesn't really make sense.

Freeing up $500k gives you flexibility to do a range of things.

Front load a few deals, get someone else in, throw a few extra bucks McKay’s way to swing him to your mob.

Maybe its just that Shiel isn’t in Scott’s plans for next year & you’re doing the right thing by giving him opportunity elsewhere.

I also don’t buy that your cap has as much room as you think it does. You’ve re-signed quite a few recently & all on good coin (Merrett, Parish, Draper, Ridley, Redman, etc) not too mention throwing $800k at McKay & $650-700 at Gresh.

That’ll change when the new CBA rolls in but you’ve got a pretty important FA & trade period coming up. No finals again next year would be disastrous…

Though if they overpay Gresham each year on a longterm contract, it is only offset by the saving of one year of Shiel's Contract which runs only till end of 2024. So longterm it could more in overpaying Gresh each year than it saves.
So it only really helps them if they need some saving next year.
What is Shiel on per year anyway? $800,000
So if they overpay Gresh they basically save nothing, they just swap Shiel for Gresham.
So the extra benefit for them is really just the pick we give them for Shiel, plus not having Shiel on their books. Is that a pro or con for them?
They get us not matching for a player they really want.
They get Shiel's money off their books to help them pay McKay.

Not sure it's that much of a worry. We'll play him when he's available but will also try to get more midfield minutes into Pou, Windy and Owens. We'll also have Dow. It's good for depth. Could have used someone like him last season when Steele was injured.

I'm not a big fan of Shiel and was relieved we missed him when he went to Essendon - we will need a bigger
mirror in the gym if he comes. That said, to get pick 13 compo - I think it's worth it. My only fear is that as
part of this arrangement we give Shiel a 2 or 3 year deal and later spread his year 1 salary across 2 or 3 years.

That was one the the rare sliding doors moments that went our way.

If Shiel had chosen us then Max King would probably be playing in a prelim tonight against the filth.

How are we paying for Henry and Dow and potentially Ralphsmith? Also we have been unable to get a look at decent free agents so far. Crouch has been a good soldier but certainly not a game changer. Not many stars go in FA. If we end up paying up big for more guys around Gresham level we are just moving the furniture around to look busy.
If they pull off multiple first round picks out of the same asset hand yourself and others laughed at and openly said aren’t worth what I mentioned they wanted to take to the draft.

I’ll back them in to do anything

I'm just really nervous about doing any deals with Essendon fullstop. We have never come off well. They are one of the clubs that I swore we should never deal with.

Shiels average disposals are on the decline

Year - Ave Disposals
2019 - 26.18
2020 - 23.13
2021 - 19.37
2022 - 22.84
2023 - 18.66

He's a bit older than I'd like to recruit, especially for a midfielder.

As has been repeated ad nauseam, it’s not really about Shiel, is it.

We're already front loading deals to make the floor.

I think Shiel deserves a crack at a flag after we sold him a lemon. Have no issue with that. Hell, we'd be willing to pay part of it to get a better pick

Merrett re-signed two years ago on a front loaded deal.
Parish is on the same money as his last contract.
Draper extended two years ago so we could bring money forward to make the cap floor, same with Ridley.

We aren't offering 800k to McKay. We aren't offering 700k to Gresham. Both are in the early 600k range.

Also no finals next year isn't a disaster. We have the third youngest and third least experienced list in the AFL.

We don't need the cap relief. We need more high end young talent.

If the Shiel + 13 thing happens then you have to look at pick 13 as the deal and Shiel as steak knives.

If he comes into our 22 and plays high half forward and literally just does what Gresh did for a year great, if we’re paying him for a year to play at Sandy 🤷🏼‍♂️ we got 13 for Gresh which is overs.

I’m huge on us just focusing on developing our already listed players and that being solid improvement but if we can turn Gresh into 13 for a year of salary cap (which we have) you’d be absolutely mad not to consider that deal.

Unless your name is Adrian, I’d suggest you’re doing nothing more than guessing.

Anyway, I think we’ve done this to death.

Let’s see what the next 3 weeks brings & then we’ll assess who was closest to the pin.

I already told you what my point was because you seem obsessed with the semantics. Regardless, is it really that serious? You come across unhinged sometimes, it's fascinating to watch. Not to mention I wasn't even talking to you lmao

I'm up for the Liverpool game and you're boring me. Go and pick apart some other plonkers posts.
Are you calling yourself a plonker? That's a little mean, George :D

Geelong essentially buying a pick off GC is different than openly rorting the AFL compensation system where the AFL has shut down deals trying to do so before.
Not sure how the AFL can stop this given the segregation of FA and Trade Windows and processes.

FA Window starts first right.
So if Gresham wants to go to Essendon and they choose to pay him $750,000 or $800,000 a year. That gets done, AFL might think Essendon are overpaying slightly but so be it.

Then in the trade window, Shiel gets done as a salary dump type deal, of which there is precedence.

Both moves happen independently.

Take it easy chief, Shiel's shit and we aren't getting a first for Gresh. You don't strike me as the type to believe in fairytales, guess you learn something new every day xo

Is that like how Ross Lyon is useless and we’re a sh*t club going nowhere? 😎

You and your mate Gring seem hellbent on filling an Olympic swimming pool with dribble together.

Take it easy? I’m inflating my raft as we speak. Real Lazy River operator over here 😎
