Dealing with difficult trading partners is easy - one offer, no negotation, everything up front, take it or leave it.

Gresham is not a trade.
Its up to him whether he accepts an offer from Essendon or not. We are entitled to match.

So then there is Shiel. If we are interested , we can make an offer. If they don't accept it, "oh well".

Have missed most of this thread but a bit of devils advocate/hypotheticals:

Let’s change the names and situation around

If we had a Dylan shiel type (overpaid player, mature age to near end of prime, can be good but doesn’t get on the park consistently) let’s say MAYBE a Brad Hill type (hill has no injury concerns but similar age and fits the mould of good player that is on more money than a club would prefer.

And

Essendon had a player like Gresh maybe a McGrath type (if he was more injured)

Would we be happy to dump hill and get McGrath at a premium and they get a concession pick?

Whenever you get a free agent ( above a certain pay scale ) you generate a compensation pick. Its stupid to get shitty about it.

Definitely. I’m just trying to see if it was from our point of view is it stupid too.

Why would Essendon want gresh that much? We don’t even rate him here. If there was a player on essendon’s list and a free agent that they wanted gone essentially why would we want to pay full Dollar.

I reckon he stays cause he’s happy here and will settle for the medium amount we want to pay him. He’s not in demand enough to force top dollar

I dislike them and Carlton a lot but Essendon fans are much more fun to banter with. Carlton fans are grumpy and just unpleasant Essendon fans fight back and it makes for an entertaining read
Fight back?

Reckon DoDoro has been at the planes since about 2000,
And he had no recruiting influence whatsoever on that flag.

Other than a few elim final wins with the dregs of that team, the joint hasn’t won a final in 20 years since.

Got me ****ed how this master recruiter is still in the job.

Best players he has drafted in 23 years were Ryder, Carlisle, Houli and Daniher (doesn’t take a genius to claim father/son)
They all wanted out of there.

Genuine question that no one can seem to actually understand

why are we (a) paying Gresham way overs to then even out the equation by losing Shiel and then (b) not only are we potentially going to pay some of Shiels salary, (c) we have arguably the most salary cap space in the competition.

Nothing makes sense and no matter which way you write it, it doesn't make sense if Essendon, perennially hard negotiators are just going to bend over and make a closely matched team even stronger for very little in return

I just don't get it and no one can explain not me why we're helping St.Kilda so much

name calling not needed

We don't need to salary dump. Further to that, why are we dumping Shiel's salary and then replacing it with Gresham's to get St.Kilda a first round compensation pick?

Like I said, nothing makes sense
Seriously?
C'mon man it's outlined below perfectly
Pefectly!
How about we ban your ass, and then when you unban gubbs for not even abusing but just being a smartass on your stupid thread we'll unban u, site wide

This is pretty much it in a nutshell

  • it is reported that you have around 2M in salary cap space
  • u want to get players in, but don’t want to use draft picks, as such going through FA
  • saints have said that if u don’t pay enough we will match the contract as are happy for him to stay, and will force a trade (u don’t want to do this)
  • to get McKay (800k) Gresh (750k) and Goldstein (500) and any other players (such as draft picks/delisted free agents) u need to make room in salary cap to afford
  • we are happy to let gresh walk to u and not match on the basis that you pay enough to trigger band 1 compo, in return we would be willing to take on Shiels entire contract in return for a late pick only
  • this helps us as it gives us a first round pick
  • this helps u as it allows u to get Mckay/Gresh/Goldstein this year without using any picks, and gets Shiels contracts off your books so that u can afford them all and would help u to try and play finals next year, as I’m sure your supporters are annoyed at not having won anything for 20 odd years

I think what’s missing here are the benefits that Essendon might gain. It’s not just a matter that they pay top dollar just to help us. But this has been done to death.

I think your reference points are a tad nasty… Do you mean Andrew McGrath, the poor mans Ryan Byrnes?

McGrath leaves me cold, colder than Dylans sub 20 disposal season and foot injury that could mean the end of his career.

Let's pick a good player like Ridley, if he was a free agent, wants to come to us but we think value is slightly below band one, say our offer is 700k/5

Then Essendon say "well, we really love Jordan, he's a leader, blah-di blah… (if it's not band one we're matching)"

Enter left of stage - DANIEL HANNEBERY

Now instead of front loading him like a sensible club, we push a million dollars into the last year of his mega deal like absolute cabbages.

We say to Essington "well if you think the highly regarded, premiership player dan might be a good fit for your young list we may begrudgingly trade him (upping our offer to Ridley to reach band 1)"

We can then front load the Hannebery space to Ridley or Nas/Owens whoever… it doesn't really matter.

Yes, we would do that deal.

We get the player we want without losing picks, we use the money that we were flushing down dan nostrils to pay the gap.

Happy days.

Amazes me the guy has had a job for over 20 years.

It was obvious to neutral fans that he was awful years ago, Bombers fans have only just caught up in thr past couple of years.

They all had it in their heads that he was a master because he drove a hard bargain.

This is exactly the sort of response I was hoping for. Seeing someone else’s hypothetical names there makes it easier for me to see the pros and cons. Though the thought of Shiel being another Dan Hannebery isn’t particularly attractive. And I stuck up for old Hanners a lot.

We’d be the ones taking on a “Hanners”

Essendon have to forward load as many contracts as they can now, as they have 23 players finishing their contracts at the end of next year. Moving on Shiel’s fat contract would help them immensely with this, but their supporters are so high off their own farts that they can’t see this.
23? That seems a ridiculously large number coming out of contract at the same time. Good luck trying to re-sign them all.

Sounds like more elite management from one of the huuuuge clubs.

Maybe Jade should have a chat to BJ, the poor dude was driven to smashing lollies off the snack table it was so bad.
