Hey JB. Why is it a loser attitude? Its actual fact. The Higgins kick moved us from 5&6 to 7&8.

Let’s not pretend it didn’t. And let’s not pretend that win will significantly change our culture.

I wanted us to win that game as much as anyone. But it may well prove costly. It also may not. Nothing to do with loser mentality.
Where is the guarantee that a player picked one spot earlier is going to be better?

There is none. And we won’t know for years.

No, the fact that in the final minute of a long season, having just lost the lead right near the end, our team had the competitive spirit to will themselves over the line and end the season on a high, for them, us and all supporters speaks volumes for where their heads are.

I was one who initially wanted to
lose more games to finish higher, but I came to realise that was not the way to go about it. Jack’s goal lifted the roof off the stadium and was the perfect end to a very good second half of the season* and hopefully give impetus for the beginning of next season.

*That and the fact that it was Carlton of course

Allen worries me. Although he can kick he often doesn't and his first instinct is to hadnball instead of work in and out of traffic.

I worry about his ability to exit stoppages. Although he is fast I don;t think he uses his speed to exit stoppages. However, he is enormous and tackles hard.

I worry he ends up more Aiden Bonnar then anyone else.

If we get Norths pick , there’s every chance we take that to Carlton the day before the draft telling them we are taking FOS (who they are equally keen on) , hoping they will be willing to throw us something useful as a live trade for a slide back position.

It worked last year with GWS , why not try it again.

Here's a question......

If we pull the trigger on Bo Allen with 7 or 8 ..... would West Coast consider trading their pick 12 for our F1?

You would think they are very keen on Bo but ..... if he is gone ..... then maybe they would prefer to trade out?

Anyone know if they have any NGAs or F/S in their sights for next year?
they have a bloke called warner in their sights,so i can see a world where that is possible

why would we do that?surely if we trade up to pick 2 it is because we actually want fos, would actually be a bit of a setback if richmond took him and we got lalor judging by the recent commentary here re fos(2-3 months ago he had lepracy),surely carlton wouldnt give us anything better than what we would have given up for the upgrade?

Gawd all this talk about pick swaps has me nervous af.

Can we please just take 7 & 8?
Fully expecting one of these will be a bust but the other will be a ripper.
I'm much more interested in trading our future first for a pick in the teens this year. Take two elite mids and then grab the best available like a Lindsay/Travaglia/Allan/Armstrong type. That's three high percentage shots at adding long-term best 22 players.

Blues next pick is 38 this year and they traded away their F1& F2 and got back Brions F2 which is currently 36 ...... not exactly picks we need

Yes .... that could work

Either they

Use pick 12 this year on their 2nd choice young player thats not Bo Allen because we pounce at 7 or 8

Or they

Trade pick 12 to us for our F1 which they use alongside other picks to get Warner next year

The original post had nothing to do with 'being better' or loser mentality it was that the generational mids will be gone by our picks by just one or two spots.

Nothing to do with the quality of Armstrong / Taaru they could be AA next year they are still not what we need for the next 5-10 years to have any chance of contention.

Whose to say who the generational mids from this draft will be .... could well be those picked at 7 & 8 ..... or 27 & 28

Lalor could turn out to be an injury flop ..... Jagga a high possession low impact GOP ...... Draper another Jimmy Toumpas ...... Smillie another Charlie Constable

Not sure how I feel about taking one player inside top 10?

If we traded pick 7/8 for norths pick 2 and their F1.

We would have to have lined up our future first with pick in the teens this year ?

Once we our out of the top 10 - we won’t be able to trade back into it - as north are currently experiencing.
It would be foolish to lose one of our early picks…the likely scenario would be #8 & future 1st for #2

Difficult to crystal ball kids of 18 but work ethic & durability should be a major consideration when selecting players

West Coast probably the worst of them. Shuey, Reddan, Hutchings, Yeo and Mastens across the centre line and ruck. Venables and Sheed off the interchange. Even Richmond had Cotch who was a very good player but not an absolute match winner, Edwards and Prestia with impact work from Dusty. Dusty the only absolute star player.
Ok, I'll give you West Coast. Richmond....nope. At least Cotchin and Martin were A grade. A lot of B+ around them. By my count it is one team in the past 25 years at least that has won a flag with a B gradeish midfield.

That is potentially a good option. Depends a lot on where you think we sit next year...16th or 6th. Probably a gamble worth taking given what is available at 2 this year.

Trading huge amounts of collateral to draft for future “needs” - as if it’s possible to predict needs usefully many years in advance - is a losing strategy imo.

About a month ago I asked the question of whether we could afford to grab both Langford and Smillie together. Moorabbin Ghost mentioned the club is considering the same thing.

Here's where I currently sit. We are recruiting for a midfield group, if those 2 are best available then we are crazy to try to even out who we select in the one draft.

A better way of looking at it would be can Langford and Windy play in the same midfield, or Smillie and Henry, or Langford and Wilson etc etc.

I'm still very firmly in the trade up to 2 for FOS or Lalor camp, but I'm guessing that's super unlikely so I'm happy to just take the 2 best and try to move F2 & 32 into the teens.
Langford will be gone so it’s not a factor..

I’ve been a fan of Allan for a long time. But I think people are getting carried away with the 1 post linking our interest. Appears to need to build a heap of midfield nous, which adds to the kicking weakness. It will come down to whether the Rymple thinks he can develop those aspects of his game. He has a couple of huge assets that I love.

As someone else said The Rymple focuses on personality and we just can’t see / assess any of that.
