Scene: Cabin in the woods, exterior. We see the broad back and shoulders of an unidentified man in his 40s, wearing a weathered flannel shirt, rough Levi jeans. Back turned to the camera, he chops large logs of wood with a determined masculinity. With each efficient tump, the tension rises

Cut to: Wheels on gravel, a indistinct government car pulls up the rural drive. Stops. Shinny black boots crunch, the sound of the forest seems to go silent, waiting.

Cut back to the man: he paused his wood cutting mid swing

Rugged Man (without turning): How did you find me?

Camera cuts to an older man, portly, a wry smile flushes his cheeks

Older Man: We have our ways. But I have to give it to you, you didn't make it easy for us. I assume you know why we're here

Rugged Man: I'm retired, god damn it. Can't you just let me die in peace?

Older Man: I was retired once too. But it never really sat with me. So what do you say, Zac? Are you ready to get to work on our unfinished business?

Smash cut to the rugged man's face. We see the grizzled, bearded face of Zac Dawson. His eyes are bloodshot but determined. His brow furrowed but set. His blistered hands grip the handle of his axe as music swells

Zac Dawson: You're goddamn right I am

Seriously though, another endurance beast with speed. At this rate we'll be able to compete in the Olympics.

We’re just getting the “best available”, it’s only a coincidence they’re almost all defenders with good “speed and endurance” 😂
Fast forward to Round 1 2025

We only have one pick in the rookie draft and it'll be Crouch.

I am thinking the new (and few remaining) Sandy players will be invited to train over the pre-season and one of them will be picked up as the SSP rookie (if/when Crouch retires) and that's how we fulfil the agreement this year?

4 days later and I still can’t make heads nor tails of this quote. It reads like he isn’t coming back.

Crouch was delisted late last month on the promise of being taken again in the rookie draft on Friday but Lyon said “we lost him” as the club freed up salary cap space.

Tim Membrey and Seb Ross, along with Battle, were other experienced players to leave the club in the off-season.

“We have made some hard decisions and there have been some tough things occur … unfortunately (Crouch) had a degenerative knee and we would have loved to have him but we lost him and those losses have enabled the salary cap to be freed up,” Lyon said.

Sounds like he's referring to the 2024 season. We would have loved to have him out there (in 2024) but we lost him.

But if it is a degenerative knee, you would assume it's only going to get WORSE... So then yeah, weird quote in the context of putting him on the rookie list for another year.

But he is one of those mentioned with regards to freeing up the salary cap

He told people he was done a few months ago. Maybe they ree rookie him pay out his contract?

Apparently Misson said last night we are still committed to Crouch

Ironic that it could have been a contribution from his parent who were probably bad mouthing the club to other player parents. Sometimes the anxiety needs to be kept in house and responsibility handed over. I'd hate to be the parent of a fringe player and probably would have been the same.
I ran into Allison's step mum at Newmarket station where we chatted because Saints are in short supply in the area.
Matt had had a bad run with injuries at the wrong time and was working so hard to make it.
And his parents were obviously so hopeful of whatever needed to happening.
It does make you pause before just saying "such and such is shite"
She had nothing but praise for the club, Ross and Mason Wood though. Different attitude I suppose.

Believe we now have 3 Cat B rookies. So we can’t get Cole onto that list.

If what I saw a few weeks back from Elwood’s sister is what I think it was.

He gets the gig today.
Can pre-list F/S rookies (Cat A) so think it would've been announced (i.e. tweeted by Cal) along with the NGA Cat B pre-listings, if we were taking him today

Can only have two Cat Bs. The first link when googled says 3 but it's an undated article on the AFL site (from 2013). Latest rules doc and CBA (from 2023) both say 2.

I think only one of them can be Irish as well - so O'Connell might have been quietly promoted to Cat A? Could be wrong on this though, would make more sense for McLennan to be promoted after they re-signed him

Cal's draft order shows us with just one pick today and it sounds like it will be Crouch, who will probably retire to free up a spot for an SSP selection

Dodson sliding as far as he did might have changed our plans for Boyd, so I think there's a decent chance the SSP spot could still go to Peckett. Get him to sign with Sandy first and we've fulfilled our obligation.
